My family and I read to each other,we are readers and discuss the books we read. I love travelogues (Bruce Chatwin is my favourite author) and philosophy; each person reads their own books, I have learnt so much listening, families that read together grows together. Thank you Rajiv ,you are an extraordinary human.
The older I get, the more I realize that simple cliches like, "it's the simple things in life," or "you won't know what you have till it's gone" makes the world of a difference. Romanticizing these little things and emphasizing the importance of intentionality behind each of our actions makes me fall in love with your content more and more Rajiv! Rajiv - this video made me cry as it brought back childhood memories that I thought were buried. I grew up with my mother reading to my siblings and me each night. My father was barely literate and my mom urged him to start reading childhood stories to us. He was embarrassed by his lack of reading ability, however, my mom told him "The kids just want to hear your voice. They won't care how slowly you read - they'll just love you anyway." That's how my father learned how to read. He went on to graduate high school, college, got a Masters in engineering and was highly successful. Unfortunately, the more successful he became, the more arrogant and abusive. As I grew older, I longed for the days when my father would stumble over words when he read to us aloud.
Beautiful advice Rajiv. My mum was a writer and now has dementia. Sometimes I read to her from her own children’s book…Sally’s Secret Diary. She no longer recognises that it’s her own work but she enjoys the closeness and the time together.
I lost one of my dear friends to cancer a few years ago. She was the closest thing to a sister that I had ever had. Our friendship originally developed over our common love of books..we spent so many days wandering used books stores and building our collections. The last few months of her life she was mostly bed bound and in a lot of pain, so I would go over and read her favorite books to her. I was grateful for the time I was able to spend with her at the end, even on that last day. Thank you for the reminder of that memory 💖
Every spring I read The Wind in the Willows to my daughter. I've recorded these, without her knowing, so one day when she grows older, she can have the recordings, complete with all her questions and our conversations. Spring will always remind me of my daughter, and our evenings reading and talking together, with our old friends Rat, Mole and Toad.
I used to read to my daughter every morning on the bus because we had a very long ride along a very busy route in which just about all stops were utilized where people were getting on and off each block. I always thought I was speaking at a volume in which my daughter could hear but that wouldn't disturb the people around us. I can't tell you How Many Times grown people, mostly men, strangely -maybe because it felt less strange to them, I couldn't know -but it was always surprising nonetheless to hear the groan as I snapped the book shut suddenly and stood to leave without finishing the story and from various positions on the bus someone would say "What? You mean I don't get to hear the end of the story??!" And it was always clear that there was genuine disappointment laying just below the joking tone that everyone used. I always loved that. The evening ride home held exhausted, drained passengers and I know that many closed their eyes and meditated upon simpler times. That was more than 15 years ago before cell phones were in every human's hands, even toddlers. We need to bring back reading for all of humanity.
When I was 10 my mum got me a book called Black Beauty by Anna Sewell and she asked me to read her a few pages every afternoon. She would lie on her bed and I would settle on a pillow at the end of it where I would read and she would listen. We worked our way through that book, little by little increasing my love of reading AND my love of horses. I have never forgotten how special it made me feel that she enjoyed my readings….and I have been a life long animal lover encouraged by the story of a horse in a book. My mum is gone, but I read to my nieces and nephew and ,now, their children in a pillow fort we build for the occasion.
Oh I hated "Black Beauty". It broke my heart. On the other hand, 'King of the Wind" was my favorite book. And I also grew up to love horses. I work with a Thoroughbred rescue organization and volunteer at a horse therapy ranch that helps veterans and children with PTSD. Isn't it amazing how a child's book can put us on a path that we follow for a lifetime?
I was cutting fabric for the dress I was commissioned, when my mother came and read a short story she wanted to share with me(apparently, she sent a link to me but was too impatient). After she finished, we chatted and then mom said: "I remember the time when your father was ironing baby clothes at this very table, and I was reading Bulgakov and Nabokov to him".
Have had a man read correspondence between his late great grandparents to me, as I helped him clear out his Mother’s home. Struck a chord in me that’s still reverberating. We have since become the best of friends over the years. Have never told him how moving it was. Now when I hear the line “I like it when you read to me” in my favorite song “Book of Love” by the Magnetic Fields I immediately go back in time to those moments. Seated across from each other at a small table in the kitchen of his beloved childhood home, 3 blocks from the Atlantic Ocean. That old wooden barn like home was sold, torn down, a Mc Mansion built in its place. Those moments being read to still stand the test of time. Thank you, R for sharing this with us.
I'm crying in my coffee shop! so good! thanks for sharing. I actually did this with my nieces and nephew.. I wanted to get them into Harry Potter so I read the first book and soon my nephew wanted to read himself to us.
My father is dying from throat cancer. He is still fighting it though. It has taken so much including his voice. We go for infusions every week and I am going to read to him. It’s a special time already just being with him, but I found inspiration from you to make it extra special by reading him devotions of comfort. My mom had lost her vision not long before she passed. She had been reading a fiction series and was frustrated she couldn't see the text anymore. I went over on the weekends and would read the books to her. I will always treasure this time we shared.
I've read to my husband at bedtime for years. We even tried (and failed at) Finnegan's Wake. I love reading aloud and am deeply grateful that my husband indulges me, even though he's usually asleep by the third paragraph.
Thank you, Rajiv. This reminded me of being in middle school and my grandmother reading every book from the Chronicles of Narnia to me in the evenings. She adopted me when i was young and was my true mother. She passed away last May and I've been so sad as the anniversary of her death gets closer. This video helped remind me to be grateful for the love and amazing memories and care she gave me.
My husband and I read to each other every evening before bedtime. We’ve done this for years. I think it’s just another indicator of our amazing relationship. ❤

I read to my children when they were little and they insist that we keep the books as they've got such happy memories of our storytimes. They are in their twenties now but still tell me how much they enjoyed that time. I never thought of doing this with them now they're adults, but maybe I'll suggest it. We still play board games and eat at the table together so maybe it will be fun. What a wonderful suggestion, who says you have to grow out of storytime... 💜
Oh! You have really touched my romantic heart. When I was sick my best friend used to do this. It was great. We'd laugh, cry and just start doing it because we enjoyed it and each other's company. I grew to love historical fiction and mythology.
Me and hubby decided this year to take turns reading verses from a chapter of the bible, cover to cover every night. Been doing this for 2 months, it's been absolutely wonderful. It never occurred to me to read other books to eachother. I love this and will certainly adopt it. I never had books read to me as a child, unfortunately, my regret is I didn't do this with my own children who are now adults. My husband always read bedtimes stories to my stepchildren, who are also adults. Thank you for the bedtime story Rajiv. Perfect timing because its lights out for me🙏

My mum sometimes read me stories, but more often than that she was telling me stories about this cheeky monkey and his adventures in the jungle, which she would make up as she went along, and which I always insatiably asked for one more and still one more because I was so hooked. So what did you talk about when you put your kids to bed instead? Don't kids take ages to fall asleep? How did you "fill" this time, if not with stories?
@@Wandering.Homebody We talked a lot about life. I was a single mother with to very athletic children, so our time was taken up with sports almost every night. Our car trips were filled with loud singing to music, games and discussions on God, values and principles. As adults, they've drawn on many of these experiences with their own children. But I read bedtime stories to my grandbabies.

My wonderful husband studied Classics and philosophy in college. I can't tell you how many times I've fallen asleep to him reading to me on an anxious night, soothed by the burble of a mythical or epic story I know in its original Latin. Reading aloud is such a beautiful art. Thank you, Rajiv!

My Grandmother didn’t read to me, she would tell me stories from her memory and pet my head till I fell asleep . That is one of my fondest memories of her. The one story she would always tell me was that of the little match girl. Lately I’ve been trying to remember those stories and look them up online. When I find one, it makes me feel so warm inside. We used to sleep in the same pull out couch in the living room. I never found that weird. I miss you Nan Nan 🌷
When my husband and I were dating I was two provinces away going to college and something we enjoyed doing was reading to each other over the phone. It was meaningful.
I love this so much! My husband and I have been doing this with our two kids some evenings lately, and it is truly magical. My 9 year old even asks if she can read poetry to me.
I wholeheartedly agree to reading to your loved ones. When my mother was little learning English my grandfather would have her read outloud from the Reader's Digest. My sister & I did the same growing up. I totally enjoyed those shared moments. My mom would give us different editions & tell us to read it first then choose what we wanted to share. I would find the short stories, word of the day & the jokes. My daughter wasn't a fan of the Reader's Digest but enjoyed writing stories of her own or reading fairly tales. Reading is fundamental 😊
My daughters' name is Daphne and she loves this story. As for me, my birthday was last week and I could only really afford myself one small gift so I ordered a compilation of E.M Forster, containing "Howard's End, A Room With a View, and Where Angels Fear to Tread". The only trouble is that I really need to see the eye doctor because these 50 yo eyes aren't what they used to be when I was younger and a voracious reader!!!
The precious reading of a beautiful story feels like a soul that is awaken and a heart that listens. I remembered the evening I read Toni Morrison's Nobel Prize speech to my boyfriend in a small incensed coffee shop. I looked up and found several people listening and we were all strangers but in that moment of the Magic of words we all were made as one. When I looked into the eyes of my boyfriend as he listened I fell into his soul and he fell into my heart. After the story one of the women hung me and we all sat together drinking coffee and eating cake and most of all we talked about Toni Morrison, her words and our lives. We departed because the shop was closing and in a moment we were all lost to one another as we departed.

Of course. My mother read to us, at night, on trips. I read to my children every night and recently my 37 year old son was critically ill. I read to him at his bedside in the hospital for weeks. It gave him double love. The love of my being at his side during his hardest trial and the comfort of a childhood ritual that brought him Indians in cupboards and wrinkles in time, and sacagawea and more. ❤

I'm from the US and my friend is from NZ. She's been reading me the books she's been enjoying during our evenings (6pm for her and midnight for me), it really brings us closer together. Also, Cupid didn't need to cause all that mischief I knew I wasn't a fan of him for a reason.

While my mom was in hospice care I read from the book " Norwegian Folk Tales" by Peter Christen Asbjornsen and Jorgen Moe. My partner often reads to me. But now, I want to make it a regular time for us. Thank you for sharing this. Keep up with the good work you do.

Yes!! I wish this was more of a common practice. I do this with some people in my life and it’s special. Also, I have and love this Greek myth book, I fell in love with the illustrations of the stories and used to read it all of the time. I’ve had it since I was 11 years old.
Lovely. I miss being read to and reading to others, having that time to savor (pre cell phones and internet). I don’t know anyone today who would want to do this, including my husband and dog. Actually, the dog might like it. 😄 I always loved that story of Daphne and Apollo, too. I had a book of Greek myths for children, too. My mom used to buy great books. You have a nice reading voice. ❤
We've done reading together over the years. Back in the way it was always me who read and now my husband does. Our dog always comes and listens. I definitely think they love it too, even if it's just the vibration of sitting on you while you read. Although my dog usually gets in his little bed and listens.

I love this! I have been married for over 35 years and I have always read to my husband. He loves me to read to him. I always thought we were a bit strange 😁❤
This is something my daughters and I have done since they were very young. To this day we still read when we spend time together. One of my fondest memories is when my youngest girl was 9, we were remodeling the kitchen and she sat on top of the ladder every evening as we worked and read us the story of Man o War the famous race horse. She Loves books to this day.

My husband read through all of the Oz books and the Chronicles of Narnia to our kids each night at bedtime. When the older one thought she was too old to be read stories to she sat just outside the door in the hallway listening anyway. I'm home sick right now and really enjoyed this reading, 🙏
This is a fantastic story and it’s a great way to spend some time with your loved ones. “To Kill a Mockingbird” is on my audible. Another favorite book is “A Tree Grows in Brooklyn.” This also a great way put your devices down. I love that my mom was a “reader” so we would be at the at the Chicago public library at least once a week. I still love books, any library and book stores.

I used to read to my parents on long car rides when we traveled across Europe. I wish I had people in my life to read to now. Sadly, my friends just talk over me or just not interested. Rajiv, you are lucky to have such good friends to share moments like this.

Rajiv you would fit in wonderfully with the Charlotte Mason homeschool crowd. Not just the reading aloud, but the traditional skills / handicrafts, using your hands to create lovely things, appreciation for quality over quantity. These are all things I incorporate into our school day in hopes my children will one day appreciate the finer things, as you do. Also I never thought I would hear someone talk about natural fibers as much as I do, I’m here to stay my friend!
When my kids were young their dad starting reading them The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings… he would skip any particularly scary parts, as they got older and read the books themselves they were often surprised! I like to read Sherlock Holmes to my partner, they’re fun to read aloud!
