Hi Erin, I just wanted to tell you that I have finally completed my diy hamster cage that was inspired by you! I am also starting a hammy channel. The cage is 1000 ish sq. in with a sand bath, platform, and several toys and is the home of my adorable hammy Cauliflower 🐹. He is a happy ham!
@@reginaphalange8390 they leave a residue. now Erin is using 50/50 vodka/water and kitchen roll tissue and i think that's the best thing ! no perfum no redidu.
When you first get your hammy is it okay to change food/water && spot clean while they’re adjusting within their first 4 days? do I do the routine but leave hammy alone?! && also when the leave items in their preferred home do I clean the dropping and urine ? Or leave it all alone ! LOVE UR CHANNEL 🌈💚🐹
It’s ok to change out their food and water. If you need to, it’s ok to spot clean, like if the hamster quickly got the bedding super dirty. This also helps get the hamster used to you being in their cage, so it will help out on taming slightly!
Omg Erin your amazing! Im a new hamster owner and i had absolutly no idea how to take care of it and the things it should have butive been watching your videos and now my hamster is so happy and shes lived for 3 years and 2 months!! Thank you so much for the great videos, your saving many hamsters!
Hey Erin I just got a 7 week old hamster and I give her around 1-2 tablespoons of food a day but I can't really tell if she's eating it I do give her a few carrot pieces a day and some sun flower seeds as treats
you're such a positive person and like. you always brighten my day. I just found your channel in the past few days and it's great. I used to have a hamster, her name was mousey for whatever reason. seeing your videos have made me want another, so once I get out of my parents house I'm pretty sure I'm gonna get one. I forgot how cuddly and sweet they are
hello! my hamster only has one nest, she likes to poo in it and i feel really guilty about disturbing the nest to clean it. i have a detolf cage so i only do a big clean every 3-4 weeks so i was wondering what you suggest? :)
Dennis Sampson I recommend a 40 gallon aquarium! I have a Syrian hamster too and I got the 40 gallon aquarium yesterday and it is so big!! He loves it already and Petco has a sale for a dollar a gallon ending some time next week! I got mines for $40 opposed to $120
Well, that would be awesome, but here in Greece it is quite difficult to find a cheap 40 gallon aquarium... Now he is in an Ikea samla bin cage (34 gallons) and I think he likes it, but I was thinking about cages like the hamster heaven or the zoozone 2. Anyway, thanks a lot for the recommendation😀.
Sara Buchanan No, I do not use critter trails because I know they are small. But I had this question in mind: Is it okay to use small cages like a critter trail for short periods of time (e.g. 2 weeks, because it's the only way I can take my hamsters with me on vacation)?
Have you ever heard of using a black light flashlight to look for where the hamster or mouse urinates? It’s hard to find where my mouse urinates and it’s not consistent, unfortunately. I just ordered a black light - hopefully it will help!
Bubblegumatlove Absolutely do not get use to your hamster biting their cage. It could break off their teeth, that cause uneven growth... Or even worse, cause brain damage. I would recommend to change to a glass or plastic cage where they can't bite on the bars.
Nesting material is what goes in the nest itself, most people choose to use shredded tissue as hamsters prefer to use soft materials in their nest . Bedding/substrate is what's used around the entirety of the enclosure for burrowing, playing in, etc. Using multiple substrates in your enclosure provides more stimulation for your hamster and is a better replication of their natural environment :)
I am courious about how often and how even to clean the nest - when the hamster usually got some vegetables and may store it . How not to disturb him, but make sure there is no rotting food inside the nest ? My rats used to store their veggies too, but they did not dig holes so cleaning was easyer. ..I know cleaning too much only causes them to feel unsafe and mark a lot.
So i have 2 main cages and one small habitat that are all connected by tubes for my hamster and one of them is 38 inches round and the other big one is 15 by 9 inches the smallest one is about 15 inches round is that big enough? my Russian Dwarf hamster is almost 2 years old and i know he will die soon once he dies should i get a bigger rectangle one like your but a little smaller if i get a sirian?
What if my hamster refuses to make a new nest? I have given her several hideaways and tried to clean her hideaways and give her nesting material, she goes to bathroom there A LOT and I tend to miss day old veggies when I change them. Her nest smells really bad and she refuses to move! And when i try to clean it she gets annoyed with me.
hi Erin! So, I'm either planning to buy a Syrian or a dwarf and I'm going to place them in the ZooZone 2. So um, is it absolutely necessary? If so, may you give me some tips on how to do it? Thank u.
You can use either vinegar/water or boiling water (if you have a plastic bottle don’t use boiling water lol). If you have a bottle brush that can help too. I put in a 50/50 ratio of vinegar and water, shake the bottle vigorously, and soak the entire bottle tip in a bowl of vinegar/water for a few minutes (while I’m cleaning the bottle) before rinsing well.
I got a new hamster 2 days before Christmas for a gift and she’s been great I haven’t had a hamster since I was a kid and I did a lot of mistakes so I try not to do them again but is it normal to feel scared you are messing things up my old master never bit me but I’m so scared my new one will she’s never been aggressive but she is jumpy I gave her a hole week to settle in but now I’m scared idk what to do
LOVE all of your videos, watch as much as I can and you have helped me so so much with my new hamster, I have subscribed to both channels and followed you on instagram, thank you, if you see this please reply ;)
A couple of times a week. Leaving water sitting out for too long will promote bacterial growth and algae so you should aim to change the water at least every other day :)
ErinsAnimals Thank you very much. By the way I subscribed to you because you give such good advise for hamsters. And I also got Instagram to follow you and see your hamsters. My Instagram is: happytails108
If your enclosure smells after only 5 days then there is a problem with the set up. Usually this is from the enclosure being too small so first make sure your cage is larger than 450sq inches (ideally you should be aiming towards 1000sq inches). If the cage is already larger than 450sq inches then the problem lies with the substrate. Check that you're using enough substrate (minimum of 6" deep for dwarfs, 8" deep for Syrians. If you are using enough then try changing to a different type of substrate that has better odour control. For example if you're using paper, try switching to aspen, hemp, or another natural substrate. If you address all of these potential issues first it should solve your problems 😊
Hi. How do I deoder wood. My hamster keep peeing inside. I'm trying to litter train him and worry he will go back to peeing on the wood if I don't get rid of the smell.
This is a disgusting comment. Don't you dare try to use my channel as a weapon to bring down others, especially when Victoria is a friend of mine. Her channel is amazing and she puts a tremendous amount of time and effort into her videos. If you don't like a channel that's fine but never, ever say shit like this.
My syrian hamsters cage is 1200sqinches big, ive tried every kind of toy (even the puzzletoys diy etc) and he shows very little interest in most of them, gets boored easily. Ive had him 4 weeks now, and hes still realy scared! like hes shaking and jumpy, skittish just realy scared and dosent feel safe at all D: sometimes he runs to much on the wheel whitout brakes, and other times he dont run at all. I have no other pets, i gave him 7 days b4 i started any taming and i try to be as gentle and patient as i can be. Taming has gone ok fore now, he started taking seeds/veggies from my hand after 5 days of taming, but still quite unsure about me. Could this be because of an realy bad experiance (in/before the petshop) or somthing with hes personality/illness? or do he just need a bigger cage and even more toys? none of my past hamsters have ever been this scared, and im worried he will get sick because of all the stress hes under. I feel like ive done everything right so far, maybe he just needs even more time? (hes also bar chewing,) could the wheel increase his anxiety? Im not expecting the tamig to be quick, but im worried about the level of stress and how scared he is all the time.
