This is very helpful. And with improved Chrome/Aluminum paints being developed and marketed, the same process will result in better brightwork painting. I think you overlooked an important tip. If you are clear coating and polishing before masking and painting, try this - after masking and trimming is complete, spray a light coat of the same clear coat and let it dry completely. Then, paint the trim black. That quick clear coat will seal the tape and prevent the black from saturating the tape or creeping under. Any seepage will be clear.
This was a great tutorial! I always dreaded doing the window trim as I would inevitably mess it up. I followed your method with fantastic results! Looking forward to my next build now. Thanks!!
When you use a spray can, wipe the nozzle clean all the time or it will sputter and splash, as the paint tends to adhere to the nozzle. You can see that happening when he does the inside, at 7.20, stop it at exactly 7.29 and you'll see it.
I'm glad I ran across your tutorial. Thanks for explaining and showing the steps you took to achieve such a great look and finish. I'm looking forward to watching more of your videos. Again, thank you for sharing your techniques.
That’s a neat technique - very nice finish. Yes it’s harder to do with a spray can or hand painting. The brush stokes build up more than spray painting - by spray can or air brush!
I've always dreaded this part of a build but I recently bought an airbrush and can't wait to try it out, I think it will be a game changer! Thanks for a nice, helpful video :)
How did you get on with your airbrush? I am on my 3rd airbrush now lol. I wish I knew now what I didn't know when I first bought one. And just how many rattle cans have you gone through? 🤣
@@Sundaydish1 Oh I'm loving the airbrush! So much control of where you are applying paint and how much of it. Just need more practise with it and maybe a second one with a larger needle size for painting the body of a car.
@@TheModelRoom I found that a .5mm needle and nozzle are best. With a dual action airbrush you can do anything with that size. Anything lower is really for fine detail work. And 15 to 20 psi. Happy airbrushing
I'm so glad I stumbled across this video. I have some models of cars stored away, that I painted about three years ago, so the paint is well cured and now I know what to do about the trim. I think it is important to use the right kind of tape to avoid damaging the delicate finishes.
haha true, you need a proper masking tape and fine spray..some spray cans shoot thick paints and its hard to get a nice result, if you have airbrush that is the best! =)
This is a risky method but it works. If cut to deep you risk the chance of pulling up the clear coat along with the tape. This happened to me a few years back and I decided to use another method. I now trace the trim as a template and cut out my own templates which completely eliminates use of a blade .
Great tutorial once again sir, very well explained and the result is super clean and perfectly linear. It's great that you explained this using both the airbrush and spray can. Well done and keep up the great work.
I'm gonna try this method, looks easy enough just got to have the tape burnished enough to cut and remove, I'm not entering any contests, and I've never used clear coat, even though I have a can of it
Love the old gsr kit u used 2nd time with rattle can whitecar such nice old body style evo 3 IM SURE THATS WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE EVO3 GSR BODY..or old STI EATHER WAY COOL BRO
I used this method and once slipped and cut into the paintwork (( ISM's method of using 2mm masking tape means not having to take a blade to your model. Time consuming but worth it.
@@melvinprudente976 owhh..yea spray cans is abit hard to get the perfect line..even with this tutorial and very light spray i too end up with uneven lines..but airbrush is perfect
Thanks! You can remove the masking as soon as you finish spraying the trim..dont leave the masking tape too long on the body because somw clearcoat is soft and the masking will leave some marks
Thanks for the tutorial, great work! I would like to ask about cutting the masking tape after applying all the paint and clear coat won’t you cut through the clear coat and leave a mark? It happened to me😂
Hi..thanks for the feedback..so far i dont have any huge issues with that..or maybe i always touch up with tamiya panel line ink😂 so the cut line is hidden already
Thanks for the video! When i try cutting tape on the painted model like this i end up with both tape and paint cut through, looks ugly. Any special tip, besides steady hand?
Is there a need to scuff the clear coat on the trim first? I’m doing a Range Rover Classic model and it has large d-pillars that will be touched when handling.
you don't need to clearcoat the window trim? can I paint the window trim after painting the car body but before clearcoat and polishing? then clearcoat and polish. then mask again and matte clearcoat the window trim.
Because most window trim is in semi gloss black colour so we just follow the real car..but if you wan protection yes u can clearcoat it, i did some to my models too
So I sprayed the black and had tape bleed under my tape, I tried to fix it and ruined my paint job… do you think I should sand those parts and paint again?
Owhh sad to hear that, normally this happen when the paint is too thick or wet..try spray as light as possible..its hard to save but u can try handbrush touchup or use a toothpick to try scrap away the excessive paint
Hi, I have some trouble when I run the line like 1:15 at the video . The line is disappeared when I want to run it . when I open a brand new 1/24Tamiya gtr r32 nismo. I found that the window line is not that obvious and significant, it is so fuzzy and even disappeared.
Could you recommend a airbrush and if I would need a compressor? I have bought this but not sure if it’s good enough? www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B07GZL7WQ5?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_image And what size nozzle is best? I’m abit new to the whole thing🤓
@@lordjordzz6920 yes u definitely compressor..its better to get a compressor with Tank..small electronic compressor will not have enough pressure to spray the entire body..small parts like wheels still possible. you can try with the set u bought 1st, see if it works for u =) for nozzle normally i use 0.5mm
Nice but, can’t find the tape, soo back to the old way .can’t buy that paint, or testors paint they quit the business. Thanks for showing , but not useful.
