Thank you for this video! Recently I have rediscovered the importance of using the squat to place things at a low height. I have also put in practice the recommendations on your video to avoid torsion on the spine while lifting heavy stuff. Now I move my feet as to rotate as one unit. And also, the principles of the Alexander technique have helped me to get rid of part of the tension that accumulates in my body as the day goes on.

Each week, you also seem to put a new video editing technique on display as well! If it concurs with the general idea of the video series, please do consider making some videos on healthy voice use.

Not sure if you still check comments but I just wanted to ask what I should do about my right knee cracking each time I squat? I’ve recorded myself following along with your instructions and I’m doing it properly but my knee still clicks uncomfortably each time. I do a job where I have to squat down a lot and really want to get rid of this knee pain. Thanks!

Sorry to hear about your knee. Any noise from joints is always unsettling but usually nothing to worry about. If you are getting pain though, you should probably back off a bit and slowly work on developing the coordination to release into the squat. If you find that the clicking always happens at a certain point in the range of movement then practice within the range that doesn't have a problem and see if you can catch anything you may be doing that is causing the problem. As always with AT, you are trying to notice general patterns of tension throughout yourself rather than just in the knee. For example, it may be that you begin to clench your jaw and hold your breath etc. By learning to stop this pattern, you may find that you are able to learn how to squat with less stress on the joint. If you feel like your knee joint may have some issues that you can't fix with this approach, it might be worth checking out the @E3Rehab channel here on YT. They have a really good video on knee problems ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-K3HxB6rAeDo.html Not anything to do with Alexander Technique but I think it can be good to look at a problem from different perspectives.

It did not work. I am 81 and although I have gotten a little more of the technique than I had before, I still cannot squat. Is there a magic cure for this? The cold weather is not helping me at all, and I am in Southern California.

Firstly, huge respect for working on this at the age of 81, many 20 year olds struggle with this so you are an inspiration! Sorry you've not been able to achieve a full squat position yet. Your flexibility and coordination may take a little longer to develop but if you don't have any medical conditions that would prevent the legs working well, I hope that you continue to make progress. There is no magic cure unfortunately but you can make this position easier to achieve by holding on to something in front of you to aid support and balance. Some people have found a heavy door or table to be useful. Be careful though as it's very challenging and there is a risk of falling etc. Any improvement should be celebrated but don't push yourself too hard. As I live in the damp, cold North of England, you get very little sympathy for Southern California weather!😂

What do you think about that kind of squat movements that are often taught and done as fitness exercises, arms for example up in front of the chest or over head etc. sometimes with extra weights? (Also here in RU-vid one can find many videos like that with search squat exercise). Do Alexander technique teachers find those more harmful or helpful? What to take into consideration if in the fitness class or other situation instructed and adviced to do those movements?

Squatting is a really effective exercise in the Gym as it works so many of the large muscles in the body. If you apply the Alexander Technique ideas from this video to that type of exercise, you will make your gym work safer and more effective. My advice would always be to get your squatting movement as coordinated as possible using Alexander Technique awareness and thinking. Then you can raise your arms into position and see whether you can achieve that without messing up your whole body balance and coordination. If you get the hang of that then you can slowly start to add weights if you want. The important thing to realise when exercising is that you are reinforcing a way of 'using yourself' so you want to make sure that the underlying movement is coordinated before you do lots of repetitions or load it with weights. In the gym, we often focus too much on achieving a certain number of reps or increasing the weight that we can lose awareness and start to move in a way that is harmful for our bodies. My video coming out this Sunday (10am GMT) is all about that tendency and how to beat it! Hope that all helps
