How to Stability Test an Overclocked PC

We've all heard people claim crazy high overclocks and say "Confirmed Stable" or words to that effect. But what actually defines a stable system, and how do we properly test for stability?
This is a topic of hot debate in enthusiast circles. "Stable" is somewhat of an arbitrary term and there is no unified testing methodology when it comes to what is considered stable, which makes it near impossible to compare different people's overclocking results in many cases.
In this video I elaborate on this, take you through how I stability test my systems and explain the reasons why I test the way I do.
Troubleshooting issues and errors/interpreting event logs, etc is a subject for another video and not covered here.

I watched this video and your i9-9900k / Maximus Hero XI video so many times. I cannot stress how much I learned. THANK YOU for all your help and the deep explanations! Thanks to you my computer is now overclocked to 5.0 Ghz on all cores and completely stable according to these tests. A few things I wanted to note that I ran into that made me pull my hair out for days. 1. Make sure BIOS is up to date (Save any created profiles first) 2. Make sure you are properly cooled! (I thought I was according to hardware monitoring but later found out it was causing BSOD's that all stopped after finding out that the airflow in my case was insufficient) 3. Use the latest version of RealBench! I was using an older version 2.43 and having crash after crash even after passing all the previous tests in this video. Noticed you were using 2.56, so I used it and passed multiple runs!

Thanks for another great guide man, now even noobs like me can OC lol. I'm on i7 8700K, Code and 16GB 3200RAM. First I tried the settings you mentioned in your OC guide exactly at 4.8ghz and 1.3V and temps were not great but ok then I tried 5ghz and temps were reaching into the 90s. I dropped the Voltage down to 1.23. Then I ran aida for 15 min with 5ghz and 1.23V for 15 min and it was fine with great temps and I mentioned that in my post on your OC review. You said 5ghz at 1.23V is a great result and I must have an amazing chip which was nice but also when something sounds too good to be true it probably is right. So today I came back to continue with your stability testing guide. Cinebench-passed Intel Burn Test 10 times standard - passed Intel burn test 10 times Very high - Failed after second time. It said try lowering core clock or get better cooling or something like that. I have the Hi115i Platinum and fans/pump were set to quiet mode in corsair ICUE software. I decided to try the very high test again but this time I set the fans and pump to extreme mode also opened the window for some cool air to come in. After doing that I passed the Very High test 10 times. Most of my stuff has RGB on it and all the lights were stuttering lol. I think passing the test on very high is good enough for me probably as I only game and watch videos but I may do the test on maximum later on. I'll probably finish watching the rest of the guide now and see what you say there about the GPU and stuff. I do have two questions though. I have the min/max cache ratio set to 42, is there any point in raising it now or not? Also, my load line is set to 6 should I drop that down to 5 or not? Thanks again man!

This was really helpful. I used der8auer's guide for OCing an 8700k on a Maximus X Hero originally but recently ran into some stability issues. I recently started getting a lot of "Memory_Management" bsod's and I have been desperately trying to figure out what was causing it. I honestly think that it may have been the XMP running a lower voltage than recommended for my RAM, but I am honestly not sure. I ran memory diagnostics that returned no errors, checked my disks and had no errors, so now I have come across your other video on how to overclock. I read on a thread to try resetting the CMOS so I did that and basically used your guide to OC from the get go. I ran all of your stability tests recommended here and so far it seems stable so I will be testing everything to see if I run into problems. You earned a sub here!

Ok, as of now, I have not had a bsod, however, I am still getting application crashes with exception code 0xc0000005 which from what I can find seems to be related to memory. Could I just have faulty RAM? Should I try unplugging one stick and trying with just 1 plugged in to see if I still have problems? Unfortunately I don't have other sticks to test with, may need to buy some.
@boostedmedia
@boostedmedia 5 лет назад
Yep try with one stick or swapping sticks into their correct matched pairs. You may also need to increase your VCCIO and VCCSA voltages
@brodofraggins
@brodofraggins 5 лет назад
Ok. I'll troubleshoot with that before buying new sticks. Thanks
@brodofraggins
@brodofraggins 5 лет назад
Ok, so after testing, I was able to determine that one of the sticks was faulty. I have gone out and bought new sticks and installed them, and it appears to be working great so far. Gonna keep running tests.

Super helpful video, thanks man. Question -- wouldn't it be faster to just skip straight to the OCCT stress test? If it fails, you go and tweak your overclock, without having to waste time on all the "warmup" tests. If the OCCT test passes, I could see the benefit in running the rest of the earlier tests at that point in case one of them catches something. But would it not make sense to just go straight for the most demanding/intense test of the group *first* in order to save time?

Hopefully I will get something good out of this video. 6 months ago I overclocked my Ryzen 1600 build. I overclocked my CPU and memory, and used the computer for 6 months without any issues. I stress tested my PC for days using: Aida64, Realbench, Memtest86, and OCCT. No issues. Today I decided to play a game which I rarely do, and one time I got a blue screen with the error "Memory management" I tried the game again and it froze for a second before the game closed. I tried them game again and it froze on the same cut-scene. So far I think I have only had issues during a mission or a cut-scene. It's just frustrating since my stress testing has been successful -.-
@boostedmedia
@boostedmedia 6 лет назад
That could be tricky to troubleshoot. Is your Graphics cars overclocked? First hint I’d try is returning to stock clocks and see if it still happens. Could be an issue with the game itself. Or maybe drivers.
@seanrobinsonjr4363
@seanrobinsonjr4363 6 лет назад
I should have mentioned that GTA V is the game I was trying to play. My GPU is not overclocked. I have removed all overclocking and have been playing some GTA V without any issues so far. Will keep playing and see how it behaves. If it's good, I will overclock my memory and see how it goes. If it passes that I will overclock my CPU too, but I think it's a memory issue. I have seen that people tend to have issues overclocking to 3200Mhz on this motherboard, or with these memory sticks. I just know that the stress tests I have done in the past passed, but running GTA V is causing issues. I also have the game installed on my HDD and not on my SSD if that matters. *I will throw my specs here:* CPU = AMD Ryzen 5 1600 3,2GHz Socket AM4 Box Motherboard = Asus ROG Strix B350-F Gaming Memory = Corsair Vengeance LPX Black DDR4 PC25600/3200MHz CL16 2x8GB (CMK16GX4M2B3200C16) Video Card = Asus GeForce GTX 1060 Dual OC 2xHDMI 2xDP 6GB Power Supply = EVGA SuperNOVA G3 550W SSD = Samsung 840 EVO 500GB HDD = Seagate Barracuda ST4000DM004 256MB 4TB

Hey Will, need your big, beautiful brain on this question. I though I had a solid OC by watching your previous video on the 8700K OC Guide so I ran the same programs you did. I managed to pass majority of them but it failed Intel's burn test. I rewatched your video and made some small changes and I passed all the tests you used. These are the settings I used: AVX: 0 CPU Core ratio: Sync all cores/ Core ratio Limit: 48 DRAM Freq: DDR4-3000MHz DRAM Timing Control: 16 - 20 - 38 Min and Max CPU Cache Ratio: 44 CPU Core/Cache Voltage: Manual CPU Core Voltage Override: 1.27 Dram Voltage: Manufacturer box says 1.35V, Asus motherboard changes it to 1.3530, but it runs better at 1.36 (I think thats safe, auto puts it at 1.5, heck no) VCCIO and VCCSA: 1.1 Cooler: Corsair H100i V2 I would really like to hit 5GHZ, stable, but I want to take it step by step and establish stability using ur method since I will be using the rig for 3D modeling, lighting, rendering and compositing. Some Adobe CC as well. CG Artist here hahaha. Anyway, what do you recommend I do next to try and hit 4.9GHZ stable first before trying for 5ghz? Oh yeah, Im not delidded. Thanks Will.

Cool Will. Just watched your delid vid and results video from before and after. Really, really enticing to do it but for what I am using it for I will stick with what I can get, plus the warranty hahaha. I will try and see if I can get it stable at 4.9 GHZ with 1.35V max. Im pretty sure I will hit the 80° C if I go any higher than 1.35V. If not then Im going to chill at 4.8. Thanks again Will, as always, appreciate the knowledge.
@boostedmedia
@boostedmedia 6 лет назад
You’re welcome. You quickly get to a point of diminishing returns. In the real world there’s no discernible difference between 4.7 and 4.8. Not worth the extra voltage/temp at some point. For me if a video takes 10 mins to render at 5.2GHZ. It takes 10 mins and 15 seconds at 4.8GHZ.

The Intelburntest Maximum test failed after 30 seconds... pc restarted. I passed the standard and very high test. Temperature was at 70c so no temp issue's. I'm currently at 4.3ghz and 1.35v. How do I troubleshoot this? I wanted to test with occt after intelburn but first I wanted to pass the intelburn before I proceed.

When running IBT and Aida64 in the background, I’m seeing big dips in cpu usage. When set to very high it stays at 100% and then dips to around 70% for a brief moment. Is this normal? Same thing happens with realbench. It’ll stay 100% usage for the most part but then dip down to 60% for a moment.

Im running the i9900k at 5.0Ghz with the avx offset set to 1, volts at 1.32. In what order do you recommend doing things from this point on? Im mostly rendering videos and working on lots of 4k material so my goal should be to minimize the avx offset I guess. Should I continue to find the lowest possible but stabile core voltage from this point, or try first to set avx offset to 0? Im a bit confused. Thanks for a great video!

Shorter instruction sets so the cache doesn’t have time to buffer. Means the cpu is working a lot harder even though the load percentage is the same.

This is probably a late reply but does the same apply for undervolting cos I'm trying to shed a few degrees of my 9900KS with no AVX offset I'm using 1.3v LLC turbo so max 1.32v and iv ran occt on smallest data avx 2 for 15mins and was fine. I don't feel comfortable leaving a stress test on un supervised and I don't hardly have 4 hours available.

What's interesting is that he uses ASUS motherboards and ASUS's profiles for AI overclocking are based off of.....you guessed it.....prime95 lol. In the bios just hit F11 and it point blank tells you this in the various info. I do agree...prime95 is way to extreme but to be honest this guy says "if the CPU can handle Prime95, it can handle anything" which is essentially the point isn't it? I only have an i5 9600k that is Oc'd to 5.2ghz. Max temp is 85 Celsius with stress tests...usually between 75 and 85 Celsius but no more. I use Aida64, Cinebench20 and Intel extreme tuning utility for the stress tests etc.

Just like to say a big THANK YOUUUUU! I've been following your tutorials on overclocking & followed the 8700k guide to the T as a base & then this tutorial with aida64, IBT, OCCT- 13 hrs (overnight), realbench & gaming With 0 issues. So 4.8ghz at 1.3v but I upped the cache to 45 I am really happy because the temps at stock were 75 to 80c and with this overclock my temps are down to 65c on AIO, no delid (Have all the kit and will be following your guide on that too if i decide to) Anyways if you have time to answer what would you say ? Stay at 1.3 & Up the the clocks to 5.0ghz & delid since i have the tool, liquid metal & glue etc or should I lower vcore, up cache a little more and be done with it ? FYI I care more about best performance rather than benchmarking. I know over 4.8ghz i will likely see benefit drops very big! Thanks again. It's been a year of confusion for me and all is clarified. I can't believe it TBH.

It really comes down to what you want. You won’t see a tangible performance improvement from delidding and pushing further.

I just finished my 8700K to 5.0ghz. I had to up the Voltage to 1.370V and my Uncore to 44. Not sure if the Uncore helped or not. I've delided my CPU with Liquid Metal and I'm using the Aorus 280mm AIO with the Stock Paste that was on it. Max CPU Temperature peaked at 76C but otherwise stayed in the lower 70s C. I finally passed the 'Intel Burn Test' set a Maximum setting. Hope this helps.

I feel like it's effecting my OC. I've copied both yours and der8auer's settings (not at the same time) and seem to be hitting a wall.
