How to Stabilize Pine Cones, and Is it worth it?

We are stabilizing Pine Cones today. I show the entire pinecone stabilizing process. It is the same as wood stabilizing except it doesn't take as long to resin impregnate pine cones. The question we come to is, is it worth your time to stabilize pine cones for resin casting and then for woodturning on the lathe. I made 2 pinecone bowl blanks, one was with stabilized pine cones and the second one was made with non stabilized pine cones. I also made the bowl blanks on a live show and made a separate video on resin turning the hybrid turning blanks

Hi Jake, just following up on my comment 2 years ago 😂 I've cast quite a few pinecones since and what I discovered is the non-stabilized pinecones still had a lot of movement in them. Pens finished with CA were like glass when I assembled them, but a month down the road I could feel the pinecone texture. They're still shiny, but more like wavy glass. The stabilized pinecones didn't move a bit, still perfectly smooth to this day. Oh, and the dyed ones came out interesting. I set them aside thinking that the dye didn't take. Well, I finally cast and turned some of them and wow, do they look cool! The light color inside the pinecone dyed perfectly. If you stabilize any more pinecones, throw some dye in the mix. You will not be disappointed. Take care!

This is super helpful! I'm thinking about turning some pinecone/resin bowls and didn't even realize you "should" stabilize the pinecones...so you saved me a ton of work. I appreciate it!

Thank you.. you will still have to repair some even if they are stabilized, but not as much. Very welcome !! 😀

@@JakeThompson Do you have any videos on how you repair them? Using resin/pinecone is new for me, and these would be Christmas gifts (Yes, I know it's May but these things take time!) for my wife/daughters. I have years of experience using traditional methods and hardwoods but want to try new things.

Thanks for doing this! I have stabilized and not stabilized pine cones that I've been itching to try, some even dyed... but still waiting on resin. At least now I'll know whether to go ahead and stabilize the rest. I'm especially curious how the dyed ones come out.

Watched a video of a pinecone resin bowl and thought coffee table!!!! But resin is expensive and while my coffee table would be smaller than usual it is still a big resin expense. Wa going to do 4" deep and sand with belt sander as I don't have a planer and then do a thin overflow top coat to seal in the sanded pinecones. Can I dry the pine cones in the oven do you think? I have a ton of old pine cones in my yard so they should be pretty dried out already?
@JakeThompson
@JakeThompson 2 года назад
It only takes a few hours or so to dry the pine cones .. so I would make sure they are dry

Hey there Jake. Just curious. With regard to stabilizing pine cones, is it necessary to weigh them prior to putting them in the oven at 220° and then weighing them again in order to verify that they are fresh from residual moisture? Thanks
@JakeThompson
@JakeThompson 3 месяца назад
Yes.. just leave them in until they stop losing weight

Great video! One question: if I don't have all the extras for a full stabilization process, is it worth it to just throw them in the oven for 3-4 hours without using the vacuum, cactus juice, etc?
@JakeThompson
@JakeThompson 2 года назад
Absolutely.. that’s what I did with the clown bowl.. just dried them for a few hours.. lots of repairs but still came out well.. we will see in time about movement 👍

@@JakeThompson thanks, Jake! I missed that in the video and I was a little confused about "drying" vs. "stabilizing." This helps a lot! Keep up the great work.

Jake, when you poured the resin did you use mold release before you put the pine cones in the mold?
@JakeThompson
@JakeThompson 2 года назад
When I casted the alumilite.. yes .. I always use mold release on the molds.. I don’t show it on the lives .. but they all have been sprayed with mold release. 👍

are they stiffer and easier to cut after stabilisation ?

They are stiffer and easier to cut after but I think the biggest difference is there’s less to repair while turning them

A year later what’s your thoughts on stabilizing pine cones? Worth it?
@JakeThompson
@JakeThompson Год назад
I think it’s worth it.. there’s a lot more fixing if you don’t stabilize.. if you don’t mind fixing voids, stabilizing isn’t necessary. But drying certainly is. 👍
