Great video! Great instruction. I’m very interested in that applicator. But most of all, I can’t believe how long you left that first line of stain. Any stain available here and that would have been game over. That stain looks so easy to work with. Great work brother

Thanks man..The applicator is Varathane synthetic available everywhere in North America. It's good for around 3 jobs then becomes too flat to absorb stain properly. The stain is Varathane brand penetrating oil based stain. Duraseal (Minwax) is similar. The lighter tints are very easy to work with as there's very little pigment..the darker stains are more heavily pigmented and more of a challenge. I appreciate the feedback from my fellow UK colleague. Your channel is amazingly helpful. Cheers!

You talked about how many passes with the drum sander...this would be on new unfinished versus refininishing. I'm getting ready do unfinished and had planned on drum to the orbital. I would think there are a lot of variables to the condition that may dictate more or less sanding from the quality/state of the floor either finished or unfinished.

Great video. I finished staining some floors today and almost immediately after I wiped the stain off I’d see these weird blotches or imprints of roundish shapes all throughout the floor. I’ll see if they disappear by tomorrow but I don’t think they will. Do you know what could cause this? Thanks.

Great video thanks for sharing. My question is once your stain is done, what do you apply to seal it? How many coats do you apply and do you do a light sanding between coats?
@HardwoodFloorRefinishing101
You can apply 3 coats of oil or water based finish. Yes screen sand, vacuum and wipe between coats…the full video to this job is here… How To Sand - Stain - Finish - Oak Floor - Varathane Special Walnut Stain - Satin Urethane (Ep#31) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-vrle9UxCkAw.html

Thank you so much for your helpful videos! I used your sponge mop method for applying oil based stain to our floors and loved it! Sadly, I don’t think I wiped off enough of the excess because after 2 days there’s still wet spots. I went in with mineral spirits to wipe off the excess and I think i’m okay!! But my question is, do I have to do anything else prior to applying the poly? I got the Loba easyfinish! Should I wait another day or two to make sure the floors are fully dry?
@HardwoodFloorRefinishing101

Hi thanks for watching The only requirement is that the stain is totally dry before applying the floor finish. Check it by pressing a white cloth on floor, if there’s no stain transfer onto cloth it’s ready for finish. Good luck 👍

Great video. I was using a square buff with 32 pad and it wasn’t enough to remove the failed staining attempt. It’s a brand new 3/4 red oak. It’s a dark color I’m guessing I’ll have to drum sand. How man passes and how low of a grit should I start with?
@HardwoodFloorRefinishing101
@HardwoodFloorRefinishing101 3 года назад
Start with 36, or 40 grit. It's only necessary to remove the existing finish to bare wood. The number of passes will depend on the quality of the existing finish. If its a factory prefinished hardwood it'll require more passes than a floor thats already been sanded. Next do 60 grit. Then edger sand perimeter. I usually 60 grit edger, then 100. Next use a scraper, then palm sander 36 then 60 grit to remove edger lines. After that Use OBS18 square buff 60, then 80 grit.

If I can't get one of those big sanders to do the 120 sanding, can I do it with a palm sander? I already did the 80grit with the big drum sander. Would it affect the stain look when using a palm sander on a floor?
@HardwoodFloorRefinishing101
You don't need to sand to 120 grit. 80 grit is good. That's the grit I sanded to in this video. Palm sand the edger, and drum stop marks out to 60 grit, then OBS 18 square buff to 80 grit. Floor is ready to stain after vacuum and dust mopping. Thank you for watching my video!

I have a question. So I sanded the floors first and while waiting for the seal to arrive, I impulsively started painting the walls. A little mistake happened and paint spilled on a little part of the floor. I cleaned up and much as I can, hand sanded as much as I can but it still has a white cast. Do I have to go in with the edge sander (it's right on the edge) and a 80-100 grit? Or am I safe proceeding with sealing the floor? I'm not looking to stain the floor because I love the raw natural look but I'm a bit confused on how to combat this mistake

Nothing is done after staining prior to 1st coat of urethane. Make sure the stain is completely dry before applying the 1st coat. Have a rolled piece of tape on your wrist and another piece to catch any hairs, dirt, bugs that may be on the floor when you're applying 1st coat.

After the staining, how long must you wait before walking on the floors?
@HardwoodFloorRefinishing101
@HardwoodFloorRefinishing101 3 года назад
This floor was stained with oil based stain. If applying an oil based urethane allow at least 8 hours to dry, for water based urethane a minimum 24 hours dry time is required. In either case you need to check the stain is dry before applying urethane as room temperature can effect dry time. I usually press a clean white cloth onto floor and if any stain transfers to the cloth its not dry so you'll need to wait. Hope this helps.

If doing more than one coat of stain( to make darker) how long to wait bewteen coats?? And does it really help darken color?? Is it true that the older wood floors dont take the stain as well ??
@HardwoodFloorRefinishing101
@HardwoodFloorRefinishing101 8 месяцев назад
If you have a specific dark color in mind its best to take a sample piece to a professional to have a custom tint made. Most Benjamin Moore or Dulux dealers will employ a "tint guy" that can make a custom stain for you. The dealer I use has one guy whose only job is to make custom tints for customers 8 hours/day. If you're applying 2nd coats of Varathane, Duraseal/Minwax stain products then yes it will make everything darker, be careful doing this as it might end up looking blotchy if not done correctly. The age of the wood shouldn't affect how well it absorbs a stain, it has more to do with the type of wood you're staining. Always test a piece of the wood you're staining before doing an entire floor to make sure its what you want. Good luck.

Google hardwood floor images to compare what you have. Also most hardwood floor companies have these listed on their website. Or take photo and visit a hardwood flooring supplier near you they should know. Most floors I see are... 1. Oak 2. Maple 3. Ash 4. Pine 5. Birch 6. Fir 7. Brazilian cherry 8. Walnut Its likely one of those.

I used a penetrating oil based wood stain for floors. If the stain you're using is thick and viscous you'll need to apply it with rags, make sure you apply in the direction of the grain and not perpendicular or it'll look bad. Watched others attempt this process, and it quickly became an epic and tragic stain mess. Too much stain was left on floor causing massive drying issues. Sponge mop just pushed all the stain around on floor. it went from bad to worse. Think it took like a month for floor to finally dry. Maybe this works for you, but guessing most could not or should not use this technique. DIY beware.
