A lot of talking but if you have the patience to watch the entire video he gives thorough expert advice…. Even the specific roller he recommends when laying it down… I would tell exactly where it is but you should watch the entire video.

Nice!!! On the OBS-18, can I use the screen or regular sandpaper is better? Also, for abrasion in between coats on Poly, can I use the OBS-18 with the 220 screen or regular sandpaper? Thank you

Hey hey. Wondering if you have any suggestions on what to use to apply a water based floor finish, other than a T-bar. I can't get one where I live, and I did the bedrooms in my house with a 2.5" and 6" brush... But I'd rather do the living room with something a little bigger. The synthetic applicator pads seem to all leave fluff behind. Ideas? Thanks for your videos and sharing ALLLLL your wisdom - it has made a massive difference in my floor sanding/finishing!

I only use lint free, microfibre paint rollers 6, or 10 mil. Before using use tape to remove any loose fibres, or vacuum it.

Thanks for the uploads. I have a question. What do you do to avoid bubbles when applying poly with a roller?
@HardwoodFloorRefinishing101
@HardwoodFloorRefinishing101 2 года назад
Stir urethane only Apply at pace where no bubbles are visible Avoid lifting roller from floor unless refilling Use good quality urethane Use only lint free, microfibre rollers And after you’ve applied urethane to a section…once 3 minutes have elapsed don’t go over that section again or you’ll likely pull urethane that’s starting to dry in and you’ll cause annoying bumps on finish that will require screen sanding the following day..

I appreciate your videos because you still use oil-based poly. Everyone else seems to do water based poly with flooding and t-bars rather than rolling on even coats and that just seems like it would be difficult to DIY and also look bad in a historical house. Do you do anything to keep dust from going into the open vents? Say you're just doing a re-coat--what is the difference between using a 180 screen to abrade or 180 grit sandpaper? Is one better/cheaper/more effective than the other? Do you tack between layers with a standard tack cloth or a clean lint-free rag? I'm going to be doing my old Victorian floors (new to me) that are in very good condition and just want to lay a couple new layers of poly. I don't care about getting out imperfections--I just want a durable new layer of poly for protection. So, I want a good bond but don't want to take any of the wood away. I appreciate any advice.

I use water based urethane also. I used to T-Bar all finishes, but I find the roller much more efficient. With any stationary applicator you're "plowing" urethane so you tend to have a build up when you reach the wall. Best not to lift T-Bar either as this can create lines. With the roller I can apply urethane in either direction with zero visible lines. I screen sand because its less aggressive than paper. Also, the holes allow urethane residue to pass through, where the paper will not. With paper there is the potential of quickly removing the finish down to bare wood. Cost doesn't enter into the equation when determining how I'm going to sand/refinish a customers floor.

I've got about 850 sq feet of red oak, 2.25" shorts that a contractor did a really poor job on so am going to refinish myself. Since it's pretty flat and mostly sanded down how many hours would you guess that it would take me to sand this down using HomeDepot rentals? Thanks in advance. Your videos are really great!
@HardwoodFloorRefinishing101
Two people should take between 16 to 24 sanding hours. One person would take a week based on an 8 hour day...Only an estimation...also depends on how detail oriented your work is..could possibly be fewer, or more hours..Good luck with your project!

what about using a lambswool head for the poly? do you clean or toss the rollers?
@HardwoodFloorRefinishing101
@HardwoodFloorRefinishing101 2 года назад
Yes I used lambswool for years, prefer rollers now...yes clean the rollers after each use...solvent thinner for oil based finish, water for water based finish...I usually get 5 or 6 uses out of each roller before tossing it.

Question - Can you use regular sand paper instead of "screen" sanding? Thanks! Just installed red oak floors in my bedroom and getting ready to sand and finish. Your videos have been super helpful!
@HardwoodFloorRefinishing101
Yes regular sandpaper is used for initial sanding up to the point of staining, or finishing. Screen sanding is used between finishing coats only. Thanks for watching!
@binglebongle8601
@binglebongle8601 Год назад
@@HardwoodFloorRefinishing101 Sorry I meant to ask specifically for between finish coats. Can I use, for example, a sheet of 150 grit sandpaper after the first coat and 220 after the second? The reason I ask is that I already have full sheets of regular sandpaper and would have to go buy the screen stuff. Thanks!
@HardwoodFloorRefinishing101
@@binglebongle8601 If you got the sheets from Home Depot you should be able to exchange them for screens. The paper abrasive would likely be too coarse and remove finish down to bare wood. I don’t recommend using paper sheets between finishing coats and 150 abrasive is too coarse. You could try a small area to test what it will look like but be careful not to be too aggressive as you may remove finish, and stain to bare wood. It’s doable if pole sanding by hand and just letting the weight of the tool abrade the floor, however you’ll still want to test in closet or small section first before attacking entire floor. Good luck 👍

Hi sir, I’m planning on refinish my floor DIY. Tend to use water-based stain. Can you please advise me which applicator should I use?
@HardwoodFloorRefinishing101
@HardwoodFloorRefinishing101 2 года назад
The Varathane applicator is good to use. Rinse it out first with water, then shake it dry. You should also vacuum it, or lay masking tape on it and pull off to remove loose fibers before staining with it. Work quickly with water based stain as it dries quickly, and edge lines are difficult to blend out.
@Outlook535

On the Loba water based easy finish what do you use to sand between the coats? Thank you in advance
@HardwoodFloorRefinishing101
I screen sand 180 between 1st & 2nd coats, 220 between 2nd & 3rd. Always check entire floor for coarseness between coats as this will determine the grit required. If you're applying more than 3 coats you likely only need to 220 spot sand with a piece of screen in your hand.

Good morning Dave, I have polyurethane oil base on now for the past 10 years which has turned in spots a orange tone. I believe from sunlight over past ten years. My wife wants a golden oak tone so I bought material and have 220,150,120 sandpaper to attach to my sidebyside, Clarke heavy duty orbital machine. I was going to start with 120 grit and work my way to 150 then 220 then clean and prep the floor for Pre-stain, then Golden Oak Stain. Then wait 24 hours and apply water base polyurethane which was very expensive. That’s my plan. The wood is either red oak or white not sure but it is 2.1/4 wide. My house was built in 1950. This is my plane. You say I think it can’t be done. I ask why? Thank you Dave.

Sand all the existing finish off to the bare wood, then stain, wait until oil based stain is completely dry, then finish floor with water based finish. Good luck.@@johnhouli3450
