I literally just started dark angels, and the way I got into it was I bought the horus heresy box set for the 10 relic termies, and the contemptor dread, kept the spartan, and then kept half the marines, and basically had two potential captains. Then bought two Deathwing Knight squads. Which I felt is a proper good start to a dark angels list.
The combat patrol is such a great box, intercessors make a strong battleline, inceptors give you fast units helping you understand how to use your ravenwing, chaplains are good and the redemptor is a great fire-base (plus big plasma gun, very DA)
Yup, I'm just about to start to assemble my Ravens as well... just about finished my Deathwing units, hahah... though kinda glad I only have one DW Command squad... 🤷♂
Starting DA, I’d focus on starting with Greenwing, they’re easy to field and play, then later on add some flavor with death and/or ravenwings, don’t immediately make your army out of them because they can be very expensive unless you can get your hands on a bunch cheap.
If you are looking to build up your Ravenwing I recommend the following list. Talonmaster Primaris Chaplin on Bike 10 Ravenwing Black Knights 3 Outriders 3 Outriders 3 Invaders (2 MM, 1 Gatling) 3 Tornados (3 AC, 2 HB, 1 MM) 3 Tornados (3 AC, 2 HB, 1 MM) 3 Typhoons (3 TML, 3 HB) For the RWBK, you'll have 4 boxes, which means you'll have 2 extra models to build your Apothecary and Banner. I recommend building 2 of the 10 RWBK that could be used as a Hunt Master so you have the option to field them as 2 units of 5 or 1 unit of 10. If you make one of the Hunt Masters with a bit more bling, it can double as a Champion. Point wise, you are unlikely to ever field 10+ RWBK, and all 3 characters, so those 12 models should cover you for just about all of your lists. This 2000 point list breaks down nicely into two 1000 point lists, bike and speeders. While the Primaris units are more generic looking compared to the Ravenwing units in this list, between the RWBK boxes and the Ravenwing upgrade frames there are a ton of bits to clearly mark everyone as Ravenwing.
I wish that Combat Patrol box had been out when I first started. Currently working on having 1,000pt lists of each “Wing” that function independently or blended together to make 2,000pt lists.
Ditto, except I'm going for 2,000pts (or just over) of each wing so I can run them as mono-wing if I fancy, currently getting close to taking up about 2 and a half shelves worth of space
HQ: Azrael, Chaplain(Warlord, Master of Sancticy), TallonMasters. ELITE: 2x Ravenwing Apothecary with Granade launcher, 1x Chapter Ancient. TROOPS: 4x troops. FAST ATTACK: as many as you can fitt, Attack Bikes with Multi-Melta. HEAVY SUPPORT: as many as you can fitt(Priority1), Hellblasters.
I got my Chaos Space Marine codex yesterday. I started collecting after buying half the Eldritch omen Box. With a few more chosen. Some legionaries, terminators and friggin Abaddon I already have 1800 points. Love the customizability of this army with the marks of Chaos and the mini kill teams you can do with the Legos.
I started the Dark Angels with the Combat Patrol box but ended up getting a Deathwing army for cheap. Now looking back and starting a Greenwing for my Dark Angels.

Currently starting off with the Greenwing. Got the combat patrol already for Intercessors and the Redemptor. Keeping the Inceptors nice and cheap with assault bolters, 'cause I will be adding Hellblasters anyway, and the WL is going to be jump pack interrogator chappie with crozius+chainsword.
I can only recommend buying Deathing Terminator box, Ravenwing Black Knights and Dark Angels Veterans when building the army. I got 4 boxes of Deathing Terminators + bits (12 terminator legs, 12 backs, 12 crux terminator shoulder pads and 2-3 bolter arms) and I created 1x unit of Deathwing Knights, 2x 5 commando squad terminators (using robbed torsos), 15 terminators (1x close combat weapons, 2x bolters) and I finished a Strikemaster, librarian, chaplain, Deathwing ancient, apothecary and champion. I could get a couple more legs, backs and other bits for 4 more terminators. Its a great box combined with the Veterans for additional arms and legs. Basically with some regular terminator bits you can get 10 terminators out of a single Deathwing box. The veterans can also be combined with the Ravenwing bits to create a HQ with ancient, apothecary and champion in robbes on foot when you get a second Ravening Box to create regular Black Knights, not using the Raveing HQ bits for the bikers. On the other hand I can't recommend the Primaris... I think if the rumors are correct I would wait for 10th editon. The current primaris models are utterly generic, except for Lazarus. You can create a cool looking Blade Guard unit using heads from the Veterans box, but everything else has this green Ultramarins feeling.
I think it would be good to include a couple of different lists at the end instead of the most competitive. The whole appeal for me to collect Dark Angels is that whole flexibility. So would have been nice to see some lists that just work without needing to be tournament winning.
For green wing incepters, hellblasters and redemptors are bees knees. Id also argue a land raider has a place in dark angels to transport terminators up im cover. Otherwise they get picked up slogging up the board or just get ran away from after failing the 9 inch charge from deepstrike.
One suggestion I have for starting a Dark Angels army is to look into 2nd hand models from the old Dark Vengeance starter set. They're all Firstborn and fairly monopose (they're pretty old kits), but that also means they're cheaper than most Primaris kits or even other Tactical Marines. Moreover, the set itself had a good variety of units. A stylish Captain and Librarian, a bunch of Tacticals (with Plasma and Heavy Plasma) with molded on DA symbols on the shoulder pads, a squad of DA Terminators, and some DA bikers. I myself used a bunch of models from this set as the core of my Dark Angels army. (I painted mine as Fallen, but I run them using Dark Angels rules, for rules and lore reasons). I got them for pretty cheap, so it's worth it to keep one's eyes open for deals.
Great army. My Goff horde came a cropper against that crazy strong apothecary & knights combo recently. Took out 50 boys and a warboss for net zero casualties

I was thinking of starting a Dark Angel army but I'm going to hold out until 10th. Im pretty sure the Lion will be coming back so they'll get an entire model refresh. Also there's two Primaris models not one. Master Lazarus is the one you had in the picture but then there Primaris Lieutenant Zakariah.
Best way to start Dark Angel is a thematic Terminator Deathwing Army. 20 models per 1000pts. It's Elite Army, yet you got enough numbers to be all over the board. Can get them painted pretty quick. Tough and Durable.
Also just want to add that blade guard deathguard are vastly weaker than the terminators. So it's the perfect army to go zero primaris. I think people can't go wrong getting some dark vengeance termies on the cheap and see how they like them. I don't think this combat patrol is worth it. You can get intercessors much cheaper than that.
Eliminators and phobos captain are amazing dark angels imo. You can get captain to hit on 2s, always wound on 2 against infantry, and deal 3 damage with ignore look out sir
I’ve got combat patrol, a box of hell blasters, 5 boxes of deathwing (not sure how I’m going to build them but some have to be knights because they look so bad ass! And belial. With the return of mr. El’johnson this would be a good time to start I probally have 5-7 years worth of painting as is 🤣

With armies i think people should really look into the unique models/units of that army. If you went the boring Primaris route for a Greenwing detachment (ie: intercessors, bladeguard, redemptors) whats the point? sure they are great units, but theres no flavour there, not when DA offer so many unique models such as Black Knights, Darkshroud, Dark Talon, Deathwing Knights, Landspeeder Vengeance, and more. Sure half of those units i mentioned are not meta breaking (and lets face it, if you wanted to break the meta theres better factions lol) but thats where the flavour is. Same goes for Blood Angels, you want Sanguinary Guard and Death Company. Space Wolves you want Thunderwolf Cavalry and Wulfen. Leave those cookie cutter Primaris lists for Iron Hands and Ultra Marines.
I'm getting into 40k with Dark Angels. So far I've only got a few models (very few: a dreadnought, a Primaris and I'm waiting for the Ezekiel I ordered). Problem is, I've no idea where to go from there as I've never played, my idea was just to paint and collect random minis but I got so into the lore I decided to give the game a shot. If anyone has any suggestions I'd appreciate it
take it from someone who has used a lot of HQ units, i definitely feel like lieutenants are the best HQ to buff your units besides librarians. because of your chapter tactic, rerolling hits is kinda overkill and boosting wounds is a much better option. i typically run a 6 squad of bladeguard, a bladeguard ancient, a chief apothecary, and a primaris lieutenant together as a roaming table threat that is very difficult to remove and outputs some solid damage. chaplins might be a good option. however, i feel like chaplins for a DA list are much weaker compared to librarians. since chaplin buffs come in the command phase, a terminator chaplin will not be able to recite litanies after teleporting in however a terminator librarian would be able to cast their spells after teleporting in. just some input from a DA player who fights imperial knights a lot.
I'd say Azrael is one of the best buffing characters for space marines right now as well. He came down in points recently and his +2 cp's is much more useful than before when you only start with 6 to play with.
Just getting back into 40K after a 24 year hiatus. Your videos have been a great help in getting back up to speed. Just curious question, are you a train conductor? If not why not?
Pretty much the key to any DA start if figuring out if you are playing competitively. If you are, then you need to immediately decide between Deathwing, Ravenwing, or Both. If you’re doing both, you MUST field Azrael. No way around it.
@@frostedbutts4340 It is on dual wing lists. You need relics or warlord traits to give you that competitive edge. Having 0 CP to start is unacceptable.
I will add that for a Greenwing/Mixed-wing list, the Honoured of the Chapter box has a ton of value for what you get. Bladeguard vets are excellent in Deathwing, the Bladeguard Ancient can hold one of our best relics, Eradicators are fantastic anti-armor, and the chaplain and Judiciar work fantastic as-is or can be very easily kitbashed into Interrogator Chaplains, a unique unit to us that holds the secret of ultimate meme power (or the equivalent to one cheap tyranid unit). The Combat Patrol box is an excellent launching position and a couple of squads of terminators never hurts anything. Also I don’t think anybody’s going to be mad if you use a Phobos Librarian as Ezekiel.
@@frostedbutts4340 I actually did scour eBay, turns out Honoured of the Chapter usually ends up saving you money over doing that. Sometimes you’ll find that amazing deal, but it doesn’t happen terribly often.
Or start 30k get the new 30k box set, age of darkness, and paint all models as dark angels. Probably the easiest way to get a full 2k dark angels army for the cheapest price. Can work for 40k and can use as first born marines.
If you’re playing DA i definitely am against the recommendation to get the space marine codex first, as a lot of dark angels armies field exclusively dark angels specific units.
As far as im concerned i got 6 eradicators (a squad with 2 multimelter and 4 heavy melter and) having them on a home objective with lazarus is absolutly insane Hitting on 2/reroll 1 and s8... If an enemy is in rangr its kind of a guaranteed kill xD
I really hope gw don’t discontinue firstborn. I love using drop pods and personally dislike the new asthetics of Primaris models. Thats why I’m playing DA because they seem to have to coolest working firstborn units.
True, but what do you think of a Patrol size army? Is it possible to have termies or Black Knights in a 500 pointer? This is a genuine question... I'm sorta new to DA and trying to put together a qucik 500 pointer (I do have some termies and knights, though... so I have the models, just not the list). Thanks if you do!

@@jack-a-lopium Terminators and maybe a chaplain would be very good at 500 points. Not many armies have the firepower to move them, especially with cover and Armor of Contempt 500 points is very unbalanced / swingy so you'll get tired of it pretty quick though
Honestly, in “GW” money its fine but honestly it’s not great value, you can get 5 intercessors for like $25, inceptors for $30, redemptor for like $45-50, and a cheap chaplain for like $20-25 so overall saving is like $120 which you can get on ebay so your not really saving anything
Nothing happened to the fallen. Cypher is in the new dex and better than ever, and Fallen get a lore blurb. Their White Dwarf rules were so terrible nobody used them. You can run them as any Legion now, none of them are a perfect fit so I'd probably go Black Legion.

Disgraceful :) Celebrating the traitors while the loyalists they refer to as the "Fallen" are left trying to rebuild their names and showing their loyalty to the Emperor. Luther is posting facepalm memes as we type :P But on a slightly more topical note, if people do want to model the Fallen, they were mostly banished following the Horus Heresy. So todays Fallen would still be wearing Mk 4 and Mk 6 armours that were prevalent then. Which is perfect timing as GW have just released 2 new boxes of those armours :D
