We ordered some asparagus crowns online, dug a furrow, and planted the crowns to start a new asparagus bed. Asparagus is a very fruitful crop that just requires a bit of patience in the first couple of years for the bed to get established.

Very easy to understand video. Looking forward to my crowns coming in March. I noticed that you didn't use a raised bed, some people suggest it for drainage, which might be a problem for me. I'll give it a try with a raised bed and see how it goes.

We have sandy loam soil, so we don't have any drainage issues. If your soil is more dense, that's definitely something to consider. Thanks for watching!

i have an abandoned bed that i planted around 10 years ago and its neglected but you know it always comes back every year, no water, no fertilizer and it just keeps coming back so you're right. Down south it grows really well!! i have the Mary Washington and it grows like a "weed" im gonna dig it up and see if can plant it in a long row!!! im pretty sure it has a big clump of crowns

It should transplant pretty easily. Nothing like fresh asparagus in early spring.

You said to plant after the first frost. Did you mean after the last frost? What if you have a family of eleven? 😀
@gardeningwithhoss
@gardeningwithhoss 6 лет назад
That's correct -- after the last frost. If you have a family of 11, might want to plant several rows.

I subbed ya for sure. been wanting to plant asparagus for a long time! I figured the best way was from the crowns. I couldn't quite see the name of the company you use for your crowns. Would you let me know what that is? I'm going to check my soil & figure where I have enough room to plant. 50 ft. for 2 people? We like it so we'll eat it. A lot of good info there my friend. Thanks a lot. I'll be back to see ya again Hoss. Have a great day.

Doubt we'll ever carry asparagus crowns, but Nourse is a great source. Haha. Our beds are still doing very well.

I've purchased all my crowns from Indiana Berry. They are a good company if you are looking for berry plants as well.

this is real old but it's funny to me that you thought only rich people food. We use to collect it out of the ditch where I am from.

I came back to this video just to see who you ordered from! I got 50 Mary Washington for a great price there. I’m excited. I planted 6 little ones from Lowe’s last year and got asparagus... it was so easy I wanted to get some more. How is your asparagus doing now?
@gardeningwithhoss

Ours are doing well. We get some great harvests late winter/early spring every year.

can I add compost to the bottom of the trench. Do I just add the bone meal directly on the crowns, or mix with the soil I cover it with? and do you level out the soil, or just add a little bit, then add more soil as it grows?
@gardeningwithhoss
@gardeningwithhoss 8 лет назад
+TIRED OF CHURCH S You could definitely add compost to the bottom of the trench. Mix in the bone meal if possible so it can get to the plant roots easier. Keep adding soil as it grows and it will form a small mound over time.

Thanks Beverly Fitch. Our Donkey is not very good at keeping quiet while we are trying to shoot videos. His pasture is right behind the garden and he likes to talk to us while we are out there working and/or filming.

+DonutPlayz Mc We used our Hoss Wheel Hoe (hosstools.com/wheel-hoes/home/) with the Plow Set attachment (hosstools.com/product/wheel-hoe-walk-behind-plow-set/) to create the furrow.

Is your soil all compost ?
@gardeningwithhoss
@gardeningwithhoss 3 года назад
We have sandy loam soils. They are very workable, but don't hold nutrients very well. So we have do have to supplement with compost. yearly.
