Ultramarines are an Army I'd like to have one day when I get more experience painting and am more confident. I really like the Ultramarines, but I LOVE the heresy Ultramarines's personality and they're whole Theoretical/Practical approach to war. In 40k Guilliman brings some of that heresy era character to the chapter in the current timeline. I also love Guilliman himself as a character so he contributes to making the Ultramarines more appealing. I love how he's trying so hard to hold the Imperium together even though he kind of hates it and feels guilty for helping to build it in the first place.

Starting an Ultramarines army might as well be titled “Starting a Space Marines Army” because it’s basically the same, except for the named characters. The biggest “problem” with starting an UM army is the amount of choices can be overwhelming to new players. My suggestion for new players is to pick a Space Marine detachment and cater your purchases to it. Despite it being Ultramarines’ rules, I recommend choosing a different detachment than Gladius because the 3 different doctrines, which can only be used once, can be confusing. Vanguard is the best SM detachment, it’s easier for new players to understand (because it doesn’t change), and has benefits for both ranged and melee units. My Vanguard lists feature ranged firepower for supporting elusive Phobos squads and some heavy-hitting melee units to blunt my opponent’s main attack. Infiltrators are useful for securing mid-field objectives from the start and screening out Deep Strikes. Scout squads are cheap, mobile units great for scoring secondaries and being a nuisance that draws fire - less likely to hit thanks to Vanguard’s rules. Redemptors and Gladiators are great for heavy fire support, if you can find positions with good LOS. I like to reinforce my Infiltrators with Eradicators and Hellblasters, punishing enemy squads that try to take the midfield from me. Calgar or a Gravis Captain leading 6 Aggressors and a Bio-Apothecary are a potent combo to throw directly at the opponent’s attack force. Dropping in a squad of Inceptors can wreak havoc in the opponent’s backfield. The whole idea with Vanguard detachment is to jump out to an early lead, disrupt and delay your opponent’s main assault for several turns, and thin their ranks to the point they’re not strong enough to take the midfield from you and catch up on points. Admittedly, the Vanguard army I’ve suggested features units found in 9e CP and BF boxes, not 10e, so it won’t be easy (or cheap) for a new player to collect. Unfortunately, 10e’s Infernus and Terminator squads aren’t as effective, which is probably why Space Marines aren’t doing very well competitively.

I started with ultramarines and have a huge collection at this point. I really belive is the "best" SM army to collect (other than creating a custom chapter) because you can literally get any model in the range and it will feel thematic and on brand. I know rules can always change but ultramarines also lets you play basically any stile of gameplay and you will have some kind of support.

Works for any Codex Complint chapter too. Crimson Fists for example, use the Codex alot despite them being sons of Dorn.

So the list from the end actually weighs in at 2080 points as listed. I think probably best way to go would be to drop the Callidus Assassin and upgrade the Storm Speeder to a Gladiator Lancer for an even bigger anti-tank gun.

With the new point changes whats a decent list for a 1000 pt general space marine army? Iv got everything from the leviathan box set i just purchased. Planning on selling the nid half on ebay and buying more marines. Any help would be appreciated, im a total noob to warhammer just getting started.

I am not much familiar with the 10th edition but in theory can I play for example white scars painted space marines with any strategem and unit combination available to space marines with them?

I really like ultramarines because of their "lets do what's practical and be flexible in our tactics" vibe, but aside from Guilliman I'm not a fan of the named characters. The push-pull of wanting them because theyre cool models but wanting my army to be more unique is tough

6 eradicators with gravis captain who has fire discipline is strong, throw them in deep strike from Uriel because you run every named ultramarine is better.

Lol...planning a 2k list is a bit wild for advice man, unless you don't work or whatever, it's incredibly unlikely that your ever going to get 2k points of anything but maybe Custodes painted in 90 days, and by that time points will undoubtedly have been adjusted, I think rather than planning a list, start by doing a character or two, a couple battleline, maybe a transport and maybe a vehicle (dreadnought perhaps) and a non-battleline infantry unit. Probably won't be a meta list, but it's a solid way to make sure that as you build your collection up you have a reasonable chance of something you have being good enough to put on the table, and make sure your looking at history too, as well as things that are basically always going to be strong. Infernus marines this edition are a nice choice, overwatch with flamers are solid horde army solutions, terminators are usually a decent choice, how often have you ever seen a list in 10th that didn’t have at least SOME flavor of intercessors? Librarians are fun, who doesn’t like psychic attacks? Lots of fun options, but I certainly wouldn't put any lists together with the idea that it'll work when you finish them

If any SM player can help me ... is there any solution to replace centurion (in Vanguard) for the deep strike with Uriel ? I already have agressors/apothicary/Calgar that I can infiltrate. But I don t have the Centurions for the deepstrike. Is there something who can do the job ? I though about hellblaster.

White dwarf showcased an ultramarines army that was 99% recasts, so that's a good tip from GW themselves.

Considering they are the poster boys for GW, it is surprising to see someone make such a video for them. Seems everybody takes them as given.

Literally buy any space marine kit lol. You could probably throw a dart at the wall of characters at your LGS and still land on an ultramarine if not a generic unnamed character

Matt Ward is responsible for all the Smurf hate. He wrote a codex that said all Space Marine aspire to be Ultramarines and they are the standard all others are held to. He was a massive fanboy given the power to write lore. He hardcore favoured Elves in Fantasy to. Its a shame because they are beautiful blue. They do motif just right not autistic deviant art cringe like the space wolves, no bland nothingness like imperial fists. Their lore is great and their primarch is the most human and relatable. Theyre basically the Nickleback of Chapters. Nothing wrong with them and actually have a few bangers but someone decided they hated them so everyone followed suit like sheep.

Ultramarines: So despised by a good chunk of the community for being oversaturated in lore that they wrap around to being underdogs in some gaming groups.

...Zzz... Uriel ventris... lets you deepstrike things that can't deepstrike. Maybe cadgar... bery tough guy that comes with some bodyguards and they can still join like blade guard I think. Then run basic SM combos depending on what you like... Could Go the iron storm route buy dreads gladiators etc and gun your opponent down. Gladius is perfecrly usable and flexible and probably the best balanced army. Fire storm if like the idea of carting around dudes in transports in a big mechanized force that reward flamer use. Vanguard task force can uppydowny and are good if you like phobos armor they generally get extra advantages when using strats on them.
