Take control of your finances and your future with the cash envelope system!
When creating your first zero-based budget, just remember to be patient with the process. A zero-based budget doesn't mean you end up with $0 at the end of the month, it simply means you are telling each dollar where to go (instead of wondering where they went)!

Emily, First of all I love your channel. I am 66 years old and never saved and was always in debt. I am happy to say that I am debt-free and am budgeting, saving, and trying to beef up my emergency fund (which I have completed baby step one). I just would like to encourage us “seniors” that you can do it, even if you need to sell your home and rent or move in with your child temporarily. We sold our home and paid off $40,000 of Credit Card debt. Then we bought a new car (cash) and opened a savings account. We paid for our car so no payment there. I don’t regret selling my house. God has provided our everything. ❤

What an incredible testimony!!! I love this!! Dave Ramsey always says it’s never too late and I always get so emotional listening to people who are retired do their debt free scream and say it’s their first time being debt free 🥹 so powerful! Proud of you Debbie!! 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼

I wanted to start with those cute journals like everyone else was doing but then i realized it was kinda counterproductive since the goal is to save money lol so instead while still getting something cute i just went to the dollar store and bought their little 4x6 photo albums lol the dollars fit in perfectly and if you wanna be descreet you can add photos to cover the money when its not full lol.. and if you wanna use a box they got cute ones too and still cheap

I love your comment about the credit cards. It is absolutely too easy to overspend with them! We find ourselves blowing the grocery budget because we can use the credit card. We have never had to pay interest, and always pay them off before the billing cycle. However those $20 charges/overages add up fast!

This was a great explanation and made so much sense. I’ll be cash stuffing for the second time with this week’s paycheck …still figuring out the categories. I’ll keep adjusting and learning each week. I figured it was better to jump in and pay with cash now rather than waiting until I had the “perfect” system. Even my 10 and 13 year old boys are using envelopes! I’m just so tired of living paycheck to paycheck. Thanks for being so encouraging! And I will dm you sometime…I’m in SE MN with the 5 boys ❤

The other downside to this system, is there is no potential to gain interest on your money. So, because of inflation, keeping cash in envelopes, is actually losing you money, by decreasing buying power. I use this system, because of ease of access, I hate banks. I paid for my current vehicle, outright,by stashing money. When you look at the stack of bills, it doesn't look that impressive.

New sub! I’m in the VERY beginning stage of cash stuffing. I purchased the small binder and the fancy envelopes for the more important bills..mortgage, car payment, food, utilities and emergency funds. Other smaller things I purchased just small plain paper envelopes, used a whole punch and out them in my little binder. They fit perfect!

Great question! We have money in the bank (both check and savings). We only take out cash for things we choose to cash stuff for ( for us it’s typically things we may forget about or overspend in). We decide how much to cash stuff when we make our budget :) For example, we don’t cash stuff auto-pay bills, groceries or gas.

Hey! Great question! I guess I’m not any more worried about that than I would be if someone broke into my house in general. I feel like between our TVs, Xbox, and laptops, they’d probably go for that stuff first 🫠 Either way, we keep our money in a locked gun safe, guarded by two giant German shepherds, so I guess it’s really never worried me at all 🖤 What does worry me though, is how bad of a Financial spot we were in before we started cash stuffing, and I never wanna go back there 🙅🏻‍♀️

I live very basic. I don’t buy anything I don’t need. I work and know what I bring in. I know what goes out just because I have basic bills. Rent and utilities low credit card limits by choice. I stack away cash in the house and stack in bitcoin. I don’t track anything because I don’t have anything to track lol. I’ve stacked away quite a bit and in my way to financial freedom with investments.The way I see expenses like oil changed and tires has to be done regardless of tracking plus I have statements if I don’t know where that money went. It’s pretty easy to know where it went when it when your bills are low. Groceries are inevitable. Eat cheap. Watermelon and sandwiches. No eating out. Simple. 33 years old 👍🏻

@theaestheticdollar
@theaestheticdollar Год назад
Great question!! My husband and I are both self employed and our income is never consistent, I feel ya on that! What we do is pay ourselves at the beginning of every month with our profit from the month before and then budget out that money for the entire month. It’s never perfect, and it took us about 6 months to really get the hang of it. If I were in your shoes working to get to that point, I would budget out the money each time Im paid and decide exactly what I’m going to do with it (give it a job), even if that’s saving, paying off debt, paying the light bill, whatever 🖤 hope this helps!

I like the idea of “feeling” spending the money with cash. You answered a question I’ve always had. I have a credit card I pay off every month and make a percent back on purchases usually 1-2% but if I’m paying in cash and spending 18% less it’s still a good decision. I think I’m going to try this and see how it goes. The only thing I’m worried about is losing the cash. I literally never have any cash so it seems so risky because I am so forgetful. Does anyone have any insight or has lost their cash walled?

What if you used play money, treating it the same way you would if it was real - pulling it out of your envelopes as you “spend” it using your plastic. That way you’d still have the visual of what’s been used and how much is left.

@Mo.Vintage15
@Mo.Vintage15 Год назад
If you need to remove the temptation ~ a couple of options ~ 1) completely cut up, throw away and close the account. This method will affect your score since length of credit history is a factor in determining FICO score. 2) My personal method is lock my credit cards from use unless I take the time to undo it. I put the cards in a bank envelope and put in the safe. This method doesn’t mess with credit score. The reason I do option 2 is because I have even gotten a letter from the bank saying they were going to close my credit card from lack of use. They give a deadline of when so make sure to use it and go home and pay it off. Hope this helps 😊
@ivy_2300
@ivy_2300 Год назад
@Mo.Vintage15 Thanks so much for the tip!! I think I'll give option 2 to a try, but maybe get a trusted person to keep/hide the card. I really would love to close the credit cards and never have to deal with them again, but I worry about about being able to obtain a mortgage in the future. I think this is a good happy medium 😊
@Mo.Vintage15
@Mo.Vintage15 Год назад
@@ivy_2300 understand!! If you have a friend you trust by all means allow them to hold them or another option is to get a small safety deposit box at your bank for safekeeping. Yes, mortgage companies will look at both revolving and installment loans when considering approval. I realize the ultimate goal is for everyone to pay cash for even the largest of purchases; however, that is not quite attainable to everyone quickly and they will have to rely on a mortgage to buy a home. Yet, keep in mind that a larger down payment is always a plus AND just because you are pre-approved for $123xxx doesn’t mean you have to purchase a home in that price range. If you find a home in a safe stable neighborhood, then go with it. You don’t have to purchase your forever home the first time. The biggest advice you should follow is meet with a mortgage broker to review your financial situation before house hunting. I am a real estate agent and I had clients do this to get advice how to improve their scores and, due to their personal situation over a course of two years, they worked hard and turned their financial life around and bought a home recently that covered all their wishlist because of the hard work they did. Best of luck with whatever you decide!

(So they all fit somewhere lol ) then I wrote on index cards for each month what my bills are with the amount . In the back of the card I labeled week 1-4 (sometimes 5) with a 40% sign and a line where I would save 40 percent of my earnings each wk ( you can choose whatever percent that’s just what I chose ) after I take out the bill money which I divided wkly for the month I leave bill percent on my debit card and withdraw the rest and stuff 40% and whatever is left I put in my savings to spend .

Do you find it tedious or annoying to be running to and from the bank? My bank is decentralized, so there isn’t any physical locations in my region, but there are fee-free ATMS. What would be your recommendation? Thanks!

I go to the bank once a week so I guess I don’t think it’s any more tedious than going grocery shopping 🖤 if that’s your only option then I would say it’s definitely worth it!

What is your method in bill selection when you cash out at the bank? Example: If you just got paid $2,500 how many 100s, 20s, 50s, 10s, etc. do you ask for.

I have a question. I see a lot of you tube cash stuffers stuff cash for big bills like rent, utilities, car payments. Can someone clarify why someone would do this. Would it be just to get ahead maybe have the 3-6 months saved. Surely you would stuff large monthly bills to just return it back to the bank. I’m new to life.. haha Ive read so many financial books and watched a ton of videos. At this point I have so many questions. I will say that cash stuffing for area I over spend has really helped me. Thanks in advance for the help.

Thank you for this. I went about this all backwards. I saw a video about cash stuffing, got the stuff to do it then didn't know how to do it with so many of my bills already debiting from my account. Your one statement of stuffing for the following month made EVERYTHING click for me.

Wow!!! What you are amazing in explaining this, ive watched tons of this cash envelope system video, but non of them explained it like what you did simple , true, real, prank and Hard haha. What i mean hard is like you did not sugar coat it, like we need it coz it's either be broke or budget. 2 hardest part of our lives. 🤭. But thanks tho, now i have a clear intention of why i need to do this. Not just for the trend. Thank you and keep being just real! You're really good in what you're doing. I will start now!

The only downside for me is my income changes each month as I get payed by the hour so I can’t really budget until I see my payslip which annoyingly only gets uploaded a day before I’m due to be payed 🤣

Hi, great video! What are some expenses that you do use a debit card for? 🤗. Also do you just leave money in your checking for utilities and what other payments?

Hey ! I love your channel it’s so helpful and honestly it’s motivational to start doing this. My question is how do you do all this on one income and specifically on my husbands income. This might be an obvious answer but I was wondering if you know how to handle this when it’s just one income and it’s your husbands money not yours.

This isn't a new thing. I've been "cash stuffing", for 30 years. It's not a "hack", it's basic budgeting. A caveat to this, is you have to have enough discipline to not raid your stash, when you want a little extra spending money. I affectionately call it the "Tin can savings plan".

So, are you actually cashing or your check? Leaving the auto debit costs in there?
@HoodCrazySouthSide

Yes I always save only when I have cash… because I can feel it, touch it, see it. So much easier to just put away and let it stack. Versus a card I always swipe and never think about the consequences.
