On the launch of most games, two camps will form but no game better showed this than Starfields release. You have one side who was extremely hyped to play it and another who hated it for being a Bethesda game studio game and an Xbox exclusive. Now this video is actually about Starfield but about the mindset people have walking into game releases. Some find the hype helps with their enjoyment of a game. You’ll feel this sense of community as you like many are enjoying the experience and the online beehive becomes busy with pats on the back and more interesting stuff to do. While the others will be wishing for the game's downfall or simply viewing everything under the lens of if it’s not the best game ever made then it’s not worth it. This means that some will just never play the game but will base an opinion based on a pre-existing bias or some will go into the game with that bias and because of that it clouds their judgment of the positives of a game. So let's sit down and talk about how you’re ruining your own gaming experience by believing all the stories you tell yourself.

I had an up and down relationship with it. I was super hyped for it too but ended up disappointed. Noticed that it was my unrealistic expectations (GOTY) that set me up. Had similar feeling with CP77 on launch but it repeated itself. Played CP77 2.0 and learned how to appreciate Starfield more since they try to do different things (Sandbox feeling). Starting playing AC Valhalla again and realized that Starfield made it look really good. Ended up not liking Starfield again lol. Had quite a journey so far with it but gonna revisit it again after updates/mods come out but yes expectations and state of mind coming into a game influences my enjoyment of it big time.@@TeronRedoran

@@TeronRedoranWhy should we have to wait a few months for a game to be fun? Didn’t have to do that for elden ring on the PS4. And that game has given me 250 hrs of fun, messing around with different playstyles. I was super hyped for elden ring, and I actually got a well made experience. Starfield is the opposite. It’s this unpolished with almost an extra YEAR in the oven (they wanted to release it in nov 2022). Stop blaming people for becoming more & more critical of games with GOOD games like Baldur’s Gate 3, Elden Ring, etc… becoming a RARITY, not the norm.
@TeronRedoran

@@LuxEternis And I see what I was saying went mostly over your head. I meant try it again when you know what you're getting into, and there's no hype or hate train going on. Right now the situation's NOT that people as a whole hate it, with just a very small minority liking it. A LOT of people legitimately love it, it doesn't take a hard look to find them, and there IS a lot to love here. There's just a VERY loud portion who love nitpicking it to hell and back, saying it's terrible, leaving a negative review on steam, and then putting another hundred hours into the game they say is shit. It's got flaws, yes. And yes, those will be improved upon in time thanks to mods and updates. But even as it is, this isn't an example of a game where they just fucked around and released something for the sake of getting your money, there's a lot of love put into it, a lot of strong moments tied to it, and it's biggest issue is more an overambition thing, than a shit quality thing. So if you have it still, try it again in a few months, even if they haven't released any dlc or the creation kit at that point. I think you'll change mind.

My opinions on games comes down to research and what multiple people think watching videos from different people and what they think regarding the game, it's content, the companies actions on the community and greed. Even if I haven't played the game I like to get a feel for the game before purchasing it and finding out if it's worth my time.

You aren't wrong with this take, but there is always a certain amount of context to go by. Like "Bethesda has been dropping junk for years, and FO76 lost all my trust.", which leads to "Any element of the next game they make that looks like it stinks will therefore be shit.". and I can't fault anyone for that. I would be extremely hesitant to ever purchase a cdproject game at launch again. All that said, people do have valid criticisms, and invalid ones. Like the whole 'you can't walk around the planet' stuff is goofy. But the poorly coded AI, barely reactive world, and on rails story with the Fallout 4 style '4 responses in different shades of snarky" is pretty awful for a 'big next gen gayme.'

Nowadays with social media it's kinda hard not to have any expectation for a game. For example I was not interested in Elden Ring but its success made me try it. The problem is that after hearing times and times again that Elden Ring was the greatest thing Humanity has ever produced, I was expecting to at least enjoy it. I did not and started to think there was something wrong with me, that made the experience even more frustrating.
@Exiled7
@Exiled7 22 дня назад
I would agree but I also think that Elden Ring as an example is pretty easy to gage if you're going to like the game. As yes social media bought you into the hype but you can just as easily watch videos of the combat of that game and the games from soft has made and ask if you would enjoy the gameplay of those. If not then that's got nothing to do with if something is wrong with you but your taste is just different to the mainstream success of Elden Ring which is something to remember as Souls games haven't really ever been truly mainstream for a massive player base. It's carved it's own niche but that niche is small in comparison to others in the hobby.

The thing I loved about Bethesda games is that you could walk from one end of the map to the other, and find so many unique and interesting things along the way. Starfield completely ruined that; I land on a planet, and there are like 3 things to do in the area. Then, you fast travel to a completely different area, rinse and repeat. It took my favourite aspect of their games and totally ruined it. So I do blame Bethesda for that, because I feel like I was promised something that they didn't deliver. I feel like sometimes, it doesn't just work. Maybe I should get a new hobby...like going to the Chess Club. Who's laughing now?

nope, What I'm saying is that if there is something you think looks cool and you want to pick it up then go for it. The consumer choice is on you. However the main point of the video is to not just get your entire view of games from a creator. Just because someone like Luke Stephens or Skill Up says a game sucks doesn't mean you won't enjoy it. If you take there perspectives seriously which I do I would choice to check out some more gameplay and also other takes. Most people just hear about a game sucking from one small group of creators and now believe it has to suck.

Interesting title to draw viewers, and I always enjoy your videos my friend. But, I don't think Starfield sucks because the mindset of players at all. The quality of a video game is NOT entirely subjective. Games should get better over time, game publishers should learn from experience and try to improve our experience. We ought not be forced to play a game through a certain lens to enjoy it! Especially when it is a role playing game. We ought not to be told "well, if you play it this way, or you think of it this way, it's good!". We ought never to be told how to enjoy a game. We ought never to be told that the way we play is wrong and that is why we don't enjoy it. The game ought to stand on its own and be good on its own, however you play it. Starfield was touted as being a massive RPG where you could explore 1000 planets endlessly and be whoever you wanted to be, do whatever you wanted to do. This was a blatant and utter lie. The corporate shilling for this game is enough to make me dislike it, but I can say after 25 hours in the game that it is not my own mindset that made me dislike it.

Yes, you can probably name a hundred reasons as to why Starfield is a piece of shit with no redeeming qualities whatsoever but guess what, some people can look past that and find enjoyment in it either way. You can’t be so dense and arrogant as to ignore how inherently subjective art enjoyment is.

I mean price is a very important fact if you ask me. Did you play Starfield on Game Pass or did you pay full price for the game? I think expectations change drastically if your money is on the line. I love Game Pass and that's my primary way to play games so I can tell you my opinion could be very different from a person who plays games paying full price. Mainly because I play a lot of games and if I had to guess paying full price also means playing less and choosing carefully your next game.

You nailed it to the floor.Reviewers do cause alot of people to form an opinion and call it their own.I mentioned to someone the other day that reviewers need review the game and not force their own like or dislike they just need to let you know what the game offers like how it plays, how it looks and story, so on and so on.But their own opinion of how the game made them feel and what they personally liked or disliked really has no place in a review that would be in a different category in my mind anyway.I say this because in the early days i had read a review on Halo but reviewer also made it clear he didn't like shooters but the review was saying just how bad halo was so i was guilty of not liking it before i bought it but ended up buying it from all the xbox hype...but i tell ya after i played it with an open mind , well halo is the reason i own prolly 80% of the best shooters on the 360.Thank you much, i tip my hat to you.Thanks for doing what you do.

I know what I want and like from a game, I know what makes a game I like good and why. For games like Starfield I look at Bethesda's track record what works and what doesn't and then I look at what the game offers. I then see what other people think if they notice the same things or the same issues. The idea that to criticize a game for the flaws it has or for failing to meet certain standards and expectations is bad I believe comes from a misconeption. Negative =\= bad nor does positive = good. How accurate claims are and how well that match up to what people want or expect from a game as well as the quality is more important. We want games to be good to improve so we criticize them and hold them accountable so they may learn and improve if we do not do that we will continue to get mediocre games.

My expectations were next to dinosaur bones and sadly those expectations were well founded. The game is severely outdated and it looks like it could have came out several years ago. Its not the engine, as pointed by Patrick Mills. It's simply a creative issue but the engine is powerful. Beth games are the only rpgs that are completely non linear in design which means you control the pacing of the game rather than story beats created by the dev team. I left a lot of hours in Skyrim, but it was more out of addiction than enjoyment (I also missed a lot of stuff Oblivion and Morrovind had), not that it has no enjoyable parts. That's how I see BGS, a studio that makes not very enjoyable, but very addictive games. Ultimately I find 70€ for an experiment a bit too much, even if I can refund it. I tried Fallout 4 on a free weekend and it didn't convince me either. While Fallout 76, which I also tried on a free weekend was basically the most boring parts of Fallout 4.

Thank you for this essay, but isn't putting everyone who is dissatisfied with the game into one bin called "victim of the opinion of others" is the same disrespectful simplification as watching others review instead of playing? Also please, be aware that many people don't have free 60-70$ to just try the game. That is why they usually watch reviews and streams beforehand. Especially in the environment where many studios try to make first 2 hours exceptionally good in order to keep customer in game long enough so that he couldn't return it. Sometimes games are just bad. CDPR ate a lot of feces for the sad state of their new IP 3 years ago, why shouldn't Bethesda? Seing how Todd & Co behave I can't help feeling repulsed: they don't fix Skyrim bugs and drop this work on modders (do you know that there's Unofficial Patch and bug fixes both for standard and Anniversary AND for Legendary editions? Which means they didn't even bother fixing them officially), try to sell mods etc. When gamers tell you your game is bugged and has FPS drops even on Steam recommended settings, it is respectful and polite to say you're sorry and you'll fix it instead of "You should upgrade your hardware". When you're told it is a problem to get around empty wastelands between points of interests withoug transport, isn't it nice to say you appreciate the idea and you'll think what you can do instead of "No there is transport. Your ship and your backpack". Behaving like that Bethesda doesn't leave any chance for understanding and support for them among the public.
@bobbypaycheque
@bobbypaycheque 7 месяцев назад
But demos and GamePass exist. You don't have to buy the game to try it. And no, I don't think a game studio is bound to the whims of their audience. I am biased because I am a dev but I don't think an artist is obliged to make other people's art for them. People need to realize that this is Bethesda's vision and if you like their previous games you will likely enjoy this but they don't have to structurally change their product because of what a vocal minority or modders think the game should be. I am glad Starfield is what it is. I don't want it to be like other games. I wanted a Bethesda game and that's what we got.
@user-kn8uv3ub9p
@user-kn8uv3ub9p 7 месяцев назад
I agree that developer doesn't have to comply with every suggestion, it's just such a hollow reply, as if they decided not to hear of any troubles gamers have with the exploration. Also adding transport is just a quality of life change, it does not destroy some creative vision or principle. Ability to use gamepass is Xbox priority, it does not work with Steam (can't refund after 2 hours) and PSStore (you can't return after you launched o_O), so the problem persists, just in this case the scale is smaller. I am happy for those who liked the game, it just looks like situation when you don't know how to voice your honest critique without being labeled as Baldur's Gate 3 fan or mindless flock. I think latest Bethesda games are a guilty pleasure and when someone tries to show us that it is actually not that healthy we refuse to accept it( I am a big fan of Morrowind and I liked Oblivion, but I think Skyrim was somewhat repetative, in Fallout 4 there wasn't a single NPC or quest that was memorable to me and Starfield is incredibly boring, so I am just sad, that BGS don't do games that I'd like anymore... @@bobbypaycheque

However, thinking you were going to be able to go into the game and have thousands of skyrim maps to explore is wildly unrealistic and was never promised. It's a true bethesda rpg through and through and I'm very happy about that

my point around gaining opinions from other creators isn’t for you to need to buy the game to make the decision. It’s towards the people who have opinions on something they’ve never played so there opinion is really nothing more than some else’s just instead it’s coming from there mouth

I agree with you completely. I have always tried to stay away from hype (or hate) for games until I’ve had a chance to get my own hands on it. For example I’ve always been a huge fan of Zelda since way back in the NES days. Come around to the release of Breath of the Wild the hype machine was really out of hand. Some people just love this game and claim it’s the best game to grace the planet ever. Did I like it, no, not really. Do I hate Nintendo or Zelda in general for one entry in the lineup, not at all. This game just wasn’t fun for me but may have been great for other people. I’m not going to throw my Switch out the window because Myamoto decided to try something bold with the franchise. 👍🏻

Are you a philosopher or a game commenter? In all seriousness though, your advice here applies to life itself and is beyond the scope of games. It's good to see people utilizing wisdom properly and injecting it into typically inane subjects that otherwise simply degrade the human condition.

nah, bethesda ruined it. too many loading screens breaking up the action. choices that don't really change the story at all. systems that feel half baked and underwhelming. a story that feels very formulaic. nah. starfeild is a bethesda game. broken, boring, and only fun once you have like 100 overhaul mods installed on it. I'm just gonna stick to Cyberpunk 2.0. that's how you make an open world game. not what ever Bethesda is doing.

I loved playing Starfield despite its flaws. ( SPOILERS ) The problem for me lies at the end of the main story, I dumped over 100 hours into my character just to realize the finale of my story was to jump into a multiverse, I cant exactly explain it, but the game just feels wrong now, this universe was my home and now it feels... Empty. The main story ruined my experience lol I will go back when the modding community kicks off, play a new game with the story removed or modded. I think this game has so much potential for a fully modded playthrough.

I don't get the hate on Starfield. It's a Bethesda game in space. I don't think their game engine is outdated, I think it's part of their art style. Like how Source Engine has unique look and physics. Haters gonna hate I guess. I will say the first 8ish hours could be better. But after that the game kicks off. I am just glad it's not a "cinematic" third person QTE fest, which seems to be what everyone wants for some reason.

The message sounds like, don't do research, don't look at previews, don't discuss, don't form opinions or expectations because you're a manchild who can't change their mind and you're baaad. It's diffcult to see such an anti-person view benefitting anybody except for bad journalists and developers wanting to blame their own shortcomings on their audience.

Nah, that argument is super shallow. Media and politicians do this very thing with buzzwords or themes. They push out content coupled with certain words or phrases that everyone starts regurgitating immedietly after. Same principle is used with song choruses which are there to sell the song. Quick small words and phrases that are easy to remember and easy to repeat

People at large weren't hating on the game because of racism. Stop looking at things through the lens of race for one day and you'll see that the game was awfully written, the fighting mechanics were extremely dull and for some reason, the choice in the scripting of the game was to make the main character come across like she's a massive cringe-fest.

@@Exiled7 As a black person living in America, everything is about race. Since you don't live my experience, you wouldn't know. Don't discount somebody else's experience because you don't live it. As for Forspoken, people roasted that one line when she realized she power. If she didn't and was acting as if she knew she had powers all along, they would have called her Mary Sue. And if people didn't like her because she was "unlikable", these are the same people who like Kratos from God of war. Who did not act like a real father to his son. Always yelling at him. The reason why people like Kratos is because he is the father they wish they had. He is an avatar for weak white boys wishing they could be men. And people like Cloud Strife from Final Fantasy VII. A big fraud that lied about his story and was emotionally distant. But Frey (From Forspoken) was the "problem". If you didn't play the game and following what everybody else said about it, you're not listening to your own advice and your own video. I'm a game developer and have been playing video games from ALL different systems since 1989, way before you were born. I know what the deal is. I'm not saying the game was perfect but it wasn't as bad as people made it out to be. It was infamous second son fused with Final Fantasy. Plus, it was a huge beta for Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. Look at the trailer to that game (FF VII Rebirth) and you'll find similarities to Forspoken.... Red Dead Redemption 2, like all Rockstar games are beta test for GTA. Especially how the alligators and the swamp land in Lagras (Blue water Marsh) was a beta test for the swamp in Florida in GTA VI. People don't see the technical aspects of video games...They just go off of their emotions and feelings.

Combat's kinda nice. NPC's are great (because they have my man Adam Jensen [Elias Toufeaux] as a Space Cowboy). The main quest is servicable enough.
