I like improv quilting but it really helps to either have or develop solid colour handling and design skills: I search out good books, tutorials and workshops on those topics. And while improv means you do not need to hew to traditional techniques, it really helps to have basic accurate quilting construction skills when you want to achieve a specific end...so a good grounding in traditional techniques is very valuable. If you just keep making, and designing as you go, you will find your way to making quilts you love. As Irene said, the process does take over.
