When learning to improvise, the key is to treat it like learning a language. Jazz is a musical language that has countless generic phrases, cliches, concepts and patterns that you become familiar with the more you listen to it.
We’ve all learnt a language before so it’s not beyond anyone. The way we did it was by listening and copying as babies. Jazz is learnt in much the same way. By listening to and copying the great jazz improvisers, we slowly build a vocabulary of jazz language and eventually, we learn to speak it fluently in a band.
This process of listening + copying is a process we like to call “transcribing”. I have an in depth video on how I go about transcribing and learning jazz language. You can check the video out here:
