There's a lot that goes into singing period! And then when you throw in the challenge of trying to belt crazy high notes while still being able to maintain relaxed composure in the quiet moments of the song... It's a lot to aspire to. But in this video, I'll share with you how I discovered that imitating a simple and less desirable sound helped me get on the path to not only singing like Chris Cornell, but also drastically expanding my usable vocal range!

Ok, so I’ve been singing over 10 years in various styles and could never do the “Chris Cornell” sound. After 5 minutes of practicing this technique I am hitting notes I’ve never dreamed of. I’m testing it out on all sorts of 80s Hair Metal songs and it totally works! My mind is BLOWN!!! Dude, you are honestly the best vocal coach online right now cause you don’t care about sounding like a dying cat as long as it gets you to where you want to sound. I really love your videos and I’ve even purchased Ken Tamplin stuff in the past that didn’t help much. Thank you so much for being so humble and awesome.

Audioslave happened at a time when he was coming out of rehab, and not doing very well in a lot of ways. The energy it takes to sing like that is as much a soul thing as a voice thing (I imagine). Saw him in Soundgarden at a festival in Sydney with multiple stages and you could not just hear but feel his voice over the top of several bands at once. He was the fucking greatest.

I'm one of the lucky ones. I lived that whole era from beginning to end. I got to see Soundgarden tour Bad Motor Finger, I think Tad was with them. To see this guy belt out Slaves and Bulldozers and hold nothing back, just seemed unnatural and gripped me to the soul. Back then he had no save mode, he just put it all out there. I saw them several times and he seemed to have one mode, all or nothing. Incidentally though, my favorite of his songs isn't even his song. Zepplin cover, Thank You, strikes such a deep chord inside me. Thought I'd share, thanks.

I timed his long scream note on “Cochise” on the first album at around 9 seconds, but wasn’t sure if some of that was a reverb effect. Then I saw Chris with Audioslave on their 2005 tour In Detroit. And I found out there was no effect - he really held that note for that long. I can still hear it in my head sometimes.

My husband was a good friend of Christophers & learned loads from him over the years. Christopher was obviously a huge & very natural talent, but he'd worked incredibly hard for years to be that good. He did also know a lot about singing technique & had studied under a well respected vocal coach for sometime to learn how to improve his stamina on tour as after the GnR tour I think it was 92 he was getting fairly severe vocal fatigue. It worked & after this his studio confidence grew & his longevity live also was much improved. I think actually Layne also went to the same guy out on the lake for vocal training. Perhaps a shame Ed never did as he does look very annoyed with himself these days when he can't do what he wants to. Though it kinda doesn't matter, Ed was always warts & all perhaps these days it's his gravitas as a human that keeps us all listening. Great vid, really enjoyed it, cheers!

Thanks for sharing. This is a question that I always keep asking. How do rock stars evolve? It's not just a gift. I'm reading Cornell's biography. And this is really a part that goes unnoticed. And imagine his dedication, because for a long time, in addition to the band, he had a steady job

I keep coming back to this video. I can sing a couple of Chris Cornell songs. I can sing most any AIC song. And I must say that 90% IS technique. 10% is introspection. But that is a BIG 10%. And it takes 100% confidence to get there because of the process you have to go through to find those notes. Chris, your videos and lessons are the ONLY lessons that have ever helped me along this journey. I appreciate what you do very much.

Man, I gotta say, your videos are so encouraging. You show that discovering how the voice works is trial and error and that it's not always going to sound pretty. But the result will be vocal quality. Also your intuitive approach, describing the sensation, and only backing that up with the medical terms, is resonating with me more than any other youtube voice teacher and even Melissa Cross, so far. And I've seen a lot of them. So, thank you!

I've never been able to sing. I've been trying to sing along to things on my playlist in the car. I have a top tenor range and could never hit the kind of notes from your cover. However a few weeks ago, after watching this video I started messing around with this odd 'cat' range. After a few days of sounding like an idiot I found this weird, high pitched, unbelievably hard to control the breakup level, singing sound. I sung along to your video after trying to sing 'dont stop me now' for about an hour. I matched the pitch of you singing in this odd voice. My brother looked like he laid an egg and said it sounded amazing. Literally the first sincere complement I've ever had on my singing. My throat gets sore trying to practice this so I think I'll take it easy until I learn more about my support system. Cat noises! It's brilliant. Thanks a million for the insight.

I can't believe I'm writing this because since Chris's passing I can hardly even bring myself to even listen to Soundgarden, Audioslave, Temple of The Dog or any of his solo stuff. I'm so glad and feel fortunate I was able to see him live here in Portland Maine with Audioslave. He sounded so good and had quit smoking cigarettes and he was just so full of energy. It was such a great show and they even played 2 Rage Against The Machine songs, "Killing in the Name", and "Bulls on Parade". It was so freaking Rad! Chris was jumping up and down like a madman with his leather boots. I'll never forget it. I love you and miss you Chris. Gone way to soon, but with us forever.

I have been playing with the controlled scream/ “Hawk Call” of David Lee Roth trying to add the distortion of Sammy Hagar, all along trying to find the pathway to Steve Perry, Peter Cetera, Miljenko Matijevic, Freddie Mercury and Chris Cornell, and I believe you have found one of the keys to the pathway here... vocal exploration is often times isolating a mouth and throat shape, and going to nature for these sounds is a great idea! I guess if I will ever unlock these secrets, it’s meow or never.

Anyway, we love how you do this! Keep it up!!!! BTW, we’re a little old school, so not sure who Chris Cornell is. You sound very young. But good stuff. You are featuring my favorite vocalists and I wish You were doing this back in 1991, lol. Chris Cornell have been my favorite singer since Screaming Life. I got to meet him in Chicago back stage at a smaller venue. His speaking voice was so rich I just wanted him to talk forever. Thank you for creating this. I'm excited to watch more of your videos.

Man this is incredible !! This meow technique is the shit !! You've discovered something that has surely been discovered before. TWO REASONS why I think this works so well. #1- Your opening up your voice box/larynx in a chromatic and thorough way and if you look deep in your throat as you rounding your notes, it is moving expanding at the top and in every way it possibly can it seems. Picture a tornado that is changing shapes top and bottom. Expanding and contracting sort of like a balloon but in waves. I couldn't sing shit. I was tired and voice was coated with crud. Did the meows up high and it instantly helps and after 2 to 3 minutes I could sing anything as if i was having my best day. AT 8 AM IN THE MORNING.

He said song writing was like tuning into a radio station. I guess it was a station ran by cats. On a serious tip....you know "The Zone"? Where in athletics or physically stressful event's you become Neo? I think that's what Cornell experienced but for song writing.

I think it was Plato that said" a life not reflected upon is a life wasted" the fact that you had the insight to try and and then purrfect it (sorry had to do it), talks volumes of your wisdom. But to pass it on shows grace of spirit. I will be trying it. And thanks for your generosity.

It was Socrates (Plato's teacher, mentor, friend) who said, "the unexamined life is not worth living". Definitely wise words. After all, in the same vein, if we don't learn from history (our own, the worlds'), we are bound to make the same mistakes.

I love early-mid 90's grunge, with Staley being my favorite (talk about power AND range!), with Vedder and Cornell right behind. But what a great story, with the morals being: 1. Inspiration can come from anywhere, even in the simplest, most innocent ways, and 2. I'm sure you were not happy about reading such a comment, but you took that anger (or whatever negative adjective fits) and processed it into something positive and your own. Again, great story, thanks for sharing.

Chris, your teaching approach without all the typical anatomy and technique jargon is a good one. I've always handled the highest (male) harmonies in every band. I learned how to sing high with power as you explain here, by pure experimentation. Though I don't have the Cornell grind...that's a new challenge to achieve.

I tried singing with Chris at a concert when he played "Say Hello to Heaven". I had to stop at the end because I couldn't go 2 octaves higher. If you can do that song, I would love to see if you can do the end.
