Hey, I'm a 19-year-old trans dude, and due to circumstances I won't be able to physically transition for some time. I do want to feel better in my own body though, I don't feel well as someone who's pretty short and isn't in shape. I've been thinking about working out for a while but every time I go to start, I can't seem to stick well with it. So here is me taking another shot at this, and I'm glad I found a channel with a trans dude to help me start out and feel more comfortable going into this. To share my long-term goals for getting into this, I want to build muscle and overall endurance in general physical action.

As someone who has also been on T for several years, thank you for making this! The sustainable approach is sooo important, for me, going from having disordered eating/exercise habits targeted towards girls/women to the often hyper-masculine Push Through The Intense Pain attitude hasn’t been great, so I’m glad videos like this exist, especially from a creator I’ve watched for so long :~) 🕺🏻

As a 25 year old trans dude who has always been super self-conscious about going to the gym for many reasons (asthma, dysphoria, dysmorphia, etc.) & no idea where to start, thank you for this. I can’t wait to start setting goals for myself.
@No-ky3kb

Just started at the gym, turns out no one is looking at you, especially if you're on machines. I didn't believe it until I did it. They can't even tell how much you're lifting. I was surprised at how low a lot of the weights were set at when I sat down and I had to raise them. Not struggling does not mean you're stronger, it probably just means they're lazier or simply not trying to reach failure - low weight high rep is indefensible for certain goals. The guys who know what they're doing and are really trying to bulk up are trying hard to struggle - because of the sweet benefits reaching failure can get you. There's always someone definitely weaker than you, like a guy in his 80s. No one can tell anything about you. And no one cares about your asthma. I started off with a yoga class at the gym.

thank u man this is a sick vid! only tip to anyone looking to track macros/calories is PLEASE be careful because it can get very intense and lead to obsession, etc. working out and getting in shape is so fun but disordered eating definitely isn’t
@lukeodubhda
@lukeodubhda 2 года назад
a compromise could be eat healthy (a variety of plants, low sugar), eat lots, particularly exercise days and just estimate protein to have a nice shake (protein is the macro that makes you feel the most full) I've heard your body weight in kg × 1 or 1.2 = grams of protein to eat/day is another rough goal

That disclaimer before talking about dieting and how you don't need to if you're not in a good headspace to do so in a healthy manner was so helpful to me. It feels like diet and exercise have always been a package deal and if you can't do one then you can't do the other which has lead to a long cycle of getting a good habit of working out being ruined by my short comings in the diet aspect so thank you so much for that

I am a masc nonbinary and my main thing is my fight with getting approved for top surgery so seeing some trans guys getting a flatter chest with just working out makes me determined to work on my dream body. I don't just want to beef up my body but I want to make myself look and feel more androgynously fit. I want to be proud of the person I will become! With ADD I struggle to get into the habit of working out, I rarely make it there consistently but I try to at least make it over on my push days. Because I feel that working my chest, shoulders and triceps do the most for my dysphoria. I've gained 10 kilos since starting T, and I hope to gain 10 more! Currently I'm trying to bench 30 kg comfortably, and we're getting close at 27.5!

@user-or7vq9jt9c u know testosterone is a natural steroid right? Like your body naturally produces it, similar to melatonin in a way. Doing T injections is just increasing the effects of it unlike synthetic steroids. You don't really sound like you have done a lot of research into this topic lol

Hey Ty, thanks for making this. I discovered a love of weight training pre-T. Even though it's something anyone of any gender can and should do, it made me feel more in touch with masculinity. I've wanted to get back into a routine and this is a big help. I would love to see a video on which aspects of body building have helped alleviate some dysphoria for you, if any have. I always imagine building up my arms and shoulders will help as it gives you a silhouette that's more "traditionally" masculine.

I started lifting weights 6 months ago and somehow I don't really have hip dysphoria anymore. Like I don't think that my shoulders grew That much. Hip muscles wouldn't have either apart from slightly more muscular tighs yet Somehow shoulder to hip ratio is much better. Love a good deadlift and pull up

I really want to work out and get in shape. BUT I just know it's going to make me spiral. Last year, I like worked out consistently for six months and it was really good, but I don't know exactly what happened but it started consuming my life and I realized I had relapsed my ED again and had to go through a whole recovery process and ended up cutting out working out. Also, weather sucks right now, cause snow means can't go outside much and roads are bad, so going to the gym also is risky... I just genuinely am jealous of people who have enough resources to work out and self restraint to track things and not let it consume them. In my mind if I'm eating in a calorie deficit, why don't I just gradually work my way back to eating less than 100 calories a day. I don't know. It sucks. I wish I could work out because I know it would really help my depression to be more active.

Thanks for doing this! I don’t feel super comfortable going to the gym atm for a few of reasons, one of them being my anxiety, so I’m looking to figure out a home routine. I’m coming up on a year on T, realizing if I want my body to change more than slightly I need to put in the work. That said I’m not trying to obtain a certain image, I’ve gotten this far being content in my transition by letting it surprise me. And btw, I think flexibility training is kinda underrated because it’s a great way to feel more in touch with your body without the potential danger of getting too preoccupied with body image if that’s a concern for you. This one time I even decided to teach myself to hold my breath for longer and worked my way up to 4 minutes! It was super fun. I like your emphasis on doing what gets you excited to keep going.

And I've definitely gotten fitter, I'm starting to get more muscular and I have a trainer I love who kicks my butt twice a week. But I'm always looking for advice (especially ftm specific) to help me with good fitness practices without overwhelming me or sending me into a perfectionistic min/max spiral. I’m not even all the way through this video and I already need to say THANK YOU so much for this. I’m 3 weeks out from top surgery and so excited to go to the gym and start exercising again. I had to stop exercising because the dysphoria of my chest and the binder made it so difficult that I gave up. It’s always been my dream to have large pecs, I’m so happy that I have a good video to lead me there. I also so super appreciate the diet talk time stamp and warning. I appreciate you so much.

Watching this while walking home from the gym for the first time ever - I just used the treadmill for a bit to build confidence before seeing the trainer tomorrow. I hope I can get the confidence ❤❤

I've been going to the gym a couple times a week for the last 6 months. I saw a huge increase in muscle mass after the first few months, then I hit a plateau. Recently I realized that I haven't been tracking my macros and that might be the issue so thank you for talking about it! No idea how I'm going to manage to eat 140g of protein every day though 🤣

🥺🥺🥺 THIS IS SO COMPREHENDIBLE AND HELPFUL, THANK YOU TY. I feel informed without being overwhelmed which is already more than I can say for past learning about this stuff attempts! Ok ok so goal: do a lifting or pushing or legging thing once weekly for the next two weeks, and be mindful of what a macro is/what foods fit where as I eat them ( I got some serious exec dysfunction so I wanna set something I can accomplish to get that initial dopamine hit)

thank you ty i rlly needed this. I barely exercise a day in my life and my goal is to get back down to 125 pounds, which according to my height is a healthy weight to go too. im currently over 230 maybe 260 pounds and ive gained from 125 to 230/260 pounds in a span of 8 months, which is a l o t to gain in such a short amount of time. doing what i did, wrecked my health and im trying to find ways to lose that weight in the comfort of my own home. Again, thank you very much for this ill definitely take this into consideration.

Just a note: this only works if you are 5’5” or taller. People that are 5’4” or shorter have a different body composition and needs to do things differently than our tall peers. Because of our short stature, our bodies process calories differently. Eating less calories will not work for us. 1,200 is way too little. Our bodies needs around 1,500-2,000 calories a day to hit body recomp. We can’t afford to eat less otherwise our bodies will hold on to the body fat for dear life thinking we are in a famine. Also, for short people, doing more weight training than cardio will better burn fat than our taller peers that can run every day to be lean. I hate being short, but I’ve been seeing better results than anything else ive tried. Lol

you, kind stranger, might have just saved me a lot of time and effort. what's ur source on this tho?

@neobridgey first of all, don't listen to this joker. When I was in the Height of my eating disorder, eating under 500 calories a day, I dropped weight like fucking crazy because that's how the majority of peoples bodies work and I'm 5'3. If you eat less, you lose weight. It's that simple. But cardio is necessary for those that want to get lean. Its a great addition to weight lifting, and good for the heart. Both is good. Rsst days should be filled with cardio, qnd the body needs at least 60 minutes a day of medium intensity cardio. And lifting weights doesn't burn fat, not the action, it burns barely any. But having a higher percentage of lean body mass and muscle (that you get from lifting weights) makes your body burn more fat.

@@neobridgeyand that's just for the average person, every person's body is different. You can be the same height, build, age, gender, frame size, all of it. You can work out the Same way as someone who looks exactly like you, and end up with totally different results. How does your body specifically process calories? What's the state of your digestive process like? What's the quality of the good you're eating? Are they easy to digest and absorb food groups? Are you getting enough fiber? Do you have any underlying health conditions or are you immunocompromised? Everyone's different.

Thank you! I start T next month and needed workout tips. My goal is to get down to 30% body fat (from 49%). And do the stair stepper on 60step/min for 45 minutes by thanksgiving.

ive been wanting to get swole for ages but i have exercise induced asthma so ive been putting it off indefinitely. ive also been worried that all the fitness routines id look at would be too overwhelming and not get,e a good body shape i desire since they're designed for cis men not afab people like me so thx for this! i was also super intimidated by all the new things im would have to learn too and standing out at the gym but knowing that other transmen work out too is a massive boost of confidence i really needed! this is now half the things off the table for me concerning wise!

you are amazing and awesome and goals. Someday I hope to manage continuous movement for 45 minutes. Right now, can't do it. I'm recovering from cancer and was obese when I started transition, only to find that T caused secondary polycythemia. *cries* My body weight is more than I can lift most of the time. But I have plans. Thank you for the helpful and sane help!

Not only you being a trans man into fitness but you have a mullet too!! Thank you for being someone I can look up to. Thank you for the advice! I've been trying to recover from anxiety surrounding fitness I have been working out on my own willingness for 5 months now but I want to keep improving. It's been slightly hard only looking at only cis men working out. I have struggled with my appearance especially from feeling like I dont fit in. As a pre t trans guy it's nice to see another transman doing things I eventually want to do. I feel like I fit in. Also sick mullet I'm trying to grow a really long one ( long rat tail ish if I pony it.)
