I bought my RX300 in hopes that I could start driving it, and give my Camry to my daughter. The transmission grenaded right after I bought it. Luckily, my my dad and I rebuilt the transmission in about 2 months. One month of planning and parts, and about 2-3 hours a day 2-3 times a week for the next month. Taking it out, tearing it down, rebuilding it, putting it back in. One step at a time. We bagged every set of bolts and numbered them as they came off. Worked way better than I expected. I have Fibromyalgia, so I can only do so much in a day. But with planning and motivation, you can accomplish anything you want. Back in 2015, I wanted a 3D printer, but they were super expensive back then. I decided to build my own from scratch. It took me about 5 months to build, working on it about an hour or two every other day, I was able to get it done. Built that one, and it worked great. Then built another one that didn't work due to size, but then built my current one, that works phenomenally well. I also used to live in the PNW, in Bremerton. I had an 89 Supra with MkIV wheels on it. That was around 2007-2012. I never joined any clubs because I was working and commuting too much, and had my daughter on the weekends. I loved that car. It was so fun. A non-turbo, black with maroon interior. I sold it for $1300 (way less than it was worth). It needed brakes and a clutch, but ran great.

I sadly had to let go of so many cars that I loved but since i didn't keep up with the work needed, it because a total lead weight that eventually had to be sold off. Great video with some fantastic tips. I restore classics here in UK as a hobby to unwind from my stressful IT day job. My approach is to do things in the reverse order of things I enjoy- so leave the best till last. For me that’s engine and gearbox. So for me a build is among the lines of 1. Engine and gearbox out and stored 2. Strip shell restoring parts as I go-painting, powder coat, replace where needed etc 3.Shell on rollover jig, sort all the rust, paint underside,then inside then outside 4. Reassemble all the nice parts from No2 then 5 rebuild engine and box so as soon as it runs I can drive it. Won’t work for everyone but works for me.

Great video and great advice! I am a big fan of making lists/setting goals and doing something project-related everyday. I have found that I have accomplished more on my current project vehicle by spending 20 minutes to an hour working on it 4 or 5 times per week versus trying to set aside an entire day on the weekend to crank stuff out. Plus I stay more engaged with the whole process and I enjoy it more as well. I set up near term goals by the seasons (i.e. Winter, Spring, etc.). One tip that I've found for me is that I review and reset my upcoming goals once I reach the end of a season. I'll readjust what I want to do and when I want to get it done based on how much I was able to complete, additional tasks that I have identified that need to get done, and knowledge that I've gained on how long things actually take to complete versus how long I think they'll take.
@PoorManMods
@PoorManMods Год назад
I totally agree with doing something everyday. Im a bit more hardcore than everyone in my group of friends and I always tell them "the more you do today, the less you have to do tomorrow". Whether than means chipping away for 10-15 minutes every chance you get, or sucking it up when you're cold and tired and staying at it for another 30-45 mins to finish the project at hand. Sticking to that mentality compared to "I'll finish it tomorrow, or next weekend" can make difference of your car making it to "that event or show" or not...or maybe even make the difference between your car being drivable and enjoyable in 6 months instead of 5 years.

#4 is super relatable for me. Been working on a personal project for 2.5 years now that isn't done, just one example. Meanwhile, I was able to build a rotary swapped BRZ in under 15 days of work, with friends of course, for someone else. If I actually had some friends around to go back and forth working on my build and there's, I'd probably get a lot more done! All great tips and I could share many examples of all of them working for me. I'll add the classic don't let perfect be the enemy of good. You put a part on the car and it doesn't fit 100% spot on? Do you get discouraged, quit for the day, maybe go inside to buy another one? Or do you keep working and plan to improve it later? You'll make more progress and be happier with the latter. Danny's advice of breaking it down into individual systems is also great. I prefer this approach to fully stripping down a car. Especially if you don't have a large space, all the tools, and a ton of money. For the V10 Impreza, I go one step at a time. I didn't even take the full interior out to remove the dash and cut the firewall. If I started with everything out, I'd feel too daunted to do anything!

Yes, soooo true. My Supra fam really helped, and they were all friends. I miss them dearly! I love my friends herein SA too, but they mostly want to do non-car stuff, which kind of just distracts from my projects and takes up what little free time I have, so I just had to take a break. When you get parts, if possible, install now. If you’re acquiring multiple components for a project, lay them out. Break your project up into sub-projects and figure out an order to accomplish them. Don’t just buy parts and pack them away, where you’ll forget about what you already have

When I did the frame off restoration on my 92 Chevy Silverado I tried to break it down into separate projects, like doing the rust repair on the cab and doors first and getting the fire wall and jams painted gave me something nice to look at for motivation. Then sand blasting and painting the frame getting the cab back on making it a roller was a big step. I started the project fall of 2018 got it running and driving summer 2021 put on 3000 miles then finished the paint job January 2022 so I guess I stuck with it good.

Fay, thank you for posting, I really needed this. I have a project that has been on and off for close to 20 years now. I like your notebook a great idea. I have hundreds of baggies that are tagged and one time very organized. Recently I had to do some renovations to my shop and organization of parts and pieces went out the window. My project is a 1978 Jeep CJ7. I am planning on a Wrangler tub conversion, however due to space kept the tub outside, covered and off of the ground. But it started to rust. So procrastination has added more work. To make the rust repairs easier, I built a car rotisserie, so now I can push out the tub driveway and work on it a little easier. Room in my shop is a premium. Keep posting your motivational videos, they really help! Thank you Danny!

Well, first off, love your 70 Superbee shirt! This is all superb advice and I love your mentality. My 55 Dodge, Papa Smurf, has been an ongoing project since 2014 and it's been a winding road. Every time the 6 volt electrical system failed, the carburator vaporlocked, and had to push it, and eventually it just sat in the garage because it's not reliable, I often wondered "why do I still have this thing?" and thought of selling it, but boy am I glad I didn't! Especially after lucking into my 270 Hemi and automatic transmission drivetrain. I'm excited to report the motor is nearly done. I had to panic ship an oil pump driveshaft and gear at the last minute, but I'm told it's about to be dynoed soon, and I nearly have it paid off! Now it's just building the car! This may sound strange, but my biggest inspiration throughout this is keeping all my car parts in my bedroom closet and having to live with them around me all the time and knowing they will make a complete car someday. I need to get better at keeping lists though. Santa Claus doesn't remember who's naughty or nice because of memory LOL. Thanks for filming this!

Good advice from Danny about doing small things. The small scale stuff will keep you motivated. Then by staying organized like you did, these small projects add up into a full build! I like to set a goal for 1 item to be done. I buy the parts and when they arrive, I set a day for the job. Goal achieved! On to the next goal. Or maybe enjoy my achievement for a while and plan the next thing. That got me through my first restoration. Now, I'm showing my son how to do the same thing with his first project. And the dopamine hits keep on coming!!

Lots of good ideas here. Coming from an ADD person who jumps to new "shiny toys" too fast, some of these have been key for me with my long term projects. I've had a 40 Plymouth Coupe for 9 yrs. I have worked on it about every 3 years for a month or so at a time. But, it's a ground up twin turbo SBC gasser Rat build and I finally got the engine block & parts to & back from the machine shop last summer. Problem is, a new "shiny" Mad Max build (turbo SBC in a 41 Pontiac on 78 K10) came along that has to be done by March. So yeah, notes to myself are key for keeping going...

Really needed this video, and it helps so much that it's from a fellow wrench turning female! My husband and I are working on a 94 Dodge Stealth R/T TT as a project and I finally hit a point of burn out a few days ago. It's running and was fairly well taken care of, but needed a good tune up, new exhaust, thorough detailing and will need some minor body repair (small dents and dings) and paint correction to get it looking really good. I was not taking it in baby steps and spending way too much time spinning my wheels either due to lack of prior research or had hit the point of exhaustion and trying to push through it. Hyper focus from ADHD doesn't help that any! 😂 I've also been dealing with some shoulder issues which makes it difficult to do some things and makes the next day a sore one, and I feel like I lose time on making progress when I am forced to take a break for a day. I never considered that the physical rest day could be used for research and/or smaller and less physically demanding projects. That realization definitely cheered me up! Love the suggestion of keeping meticulous notes as well, as I'm notorious for having to take some time to figure out where we left off... then again that's anything in my life that gets put down for more than 5 minutes! 😂 Definitely going to take this amazing advice and put it to good use moving forward. From one car lady to another, thank you so much and keep on wrenching girl!

Nice video idea! ADHD is kicking my tail. OMG, I have like 50 LT projects that I need to get to sometime. I guess my most beloved long term project is a 95 YJ. It's waiting for me to install the 4.6 stroker, body lift, lift springs, a ford 8.8 rear diff and etc. My organization is so poor, but it's a huge key for those with ADHD. I dig your receipt/note book. My first car was an '86 MR2. It was an amazingly fun car until I smoked the rings. I removed the long block from underneath with the body supported on railroad ties in the yard and reinstalled it by myself when I was 19. It was disassembled for so long that the injectors were stuck after assembly. I tapped them on our concrete porch to get them working again. :) I only have Chevy's, Jeeps, tractors, and motorcycles now. :( That feeling when you are hauling butt in/on your long term project for the first time or for the first time in a long time: "OMG, if I knew it was going to be this much fun I would have finished it 6 months ago! I totally should have finished this before now. Whee!!!!" The last two projects that I felt that way about were Suzukis. I purchased most of a Gen 1 Bandit 1200 in totes and a badly neglected, weathered, and previously misassembled & mis-wired RF900RV. 🏍

Awesome video and advice. Makes me feel like I’m on the right track. I have some thoughts as well for how to stay motivated and in love with your project car - lose some sleep by over thinking and over planning every step of the process. Dive down the youtube rabbit hole, how did you get to this 45 minute compilation video of silo’s being tipped over? Re-focus. Yell into the wind. Write your project car a love letter in haiku. She doesn’t like it. Become emotionally bankrupt. Allow that bewitching balance of anxiety and ADHD to take the wheel for a few weeks. You are now financially bankrupt as well. Channel strength and wisdom from your German ancestors. Rinse and repeat. Phew. I’m sure someone will find this additional advice extremely helpful. But a serious answer would be all the ones you and Danny have already given. And I’ll add - do it for yourself and not for anyone else. Learn from every triumph and failure. Joy in the journey. Celebrate the wins.

Annie, I LOVE THIS. 'DO IT FOR YOURSELF AND NOT FOR ANYONE ELSE" YESSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And you're so right about the learning opportunities. If we already knew every step about building cars, it would be so boring. There are new things to experience with every modification, every part of our builds - what a great opportunity that is to level up and be interested in everything we do!!!

Faye, Really inspiring video, I would think that a lot of auto enthusiasts needed to hear this message with all the unfinished projects out there I just relocated from Portland Oregon to Atlanta Georgia and pulled my unfinished LS swapped S 10 project behind the U Haul all the way here, I have been trying to get my shop together so I can get back to working on it and get it on the road again, my biggest obstacle here in the Atlanta area is finding a reliable engine builder that’s willing to take on rebuilding my LS 2 I have just purchased and set up my a Advantage 4 post lift in the shop I have here at my new home, so hearing your advice in this video is just the motivation I need ! I love the video. You're an ideal person to give meaningful advice about how to be effective and make the things we undertake into life enhancing experiences. I must say though, I get nervous when I see the new fashion of deliberate visual glitches incorporated because I've already encountered unwatchable videos in which these were numerous enough to sink the whole thing. I trust you will avoid any such temptation. I think the whole idea of marking transitions with blasts of noise or the aforementioned visual artifacts is probably not even necessary. 😊

Great video and tips! I love the list tip I have notes, goals, stuff I need to order, stuff I need to install and just to keep track of everything. I have a ton of projects vehicles. 1990 240sx, 2008 STI, 2007 Tacoma, 1450 class off road race truck, 1976 CB550F, 2005 CRF450X supermoto, 19ft skiff. Everything runs and that’s a huge motivator. I also installed, fabricated, painted, rebuilt and do the maintenance myself. I didn’t want to write a huge description of each vehicle, but they all have a cool story, my reason for building them a certain way and each one has taught me something. Maybe I’ll post a video about them 🤔 My full time job is boat “maintenance” so I’m a backyard mechanic and pretty much only work on my vehicles. I was afraid of being a full-time car mechanic/fabricator/welder and losing interest in my hobby if that makes sense. That’s why I stuck to boating so I can keep it separated, but getting better one transfers into the other.

I didn't know how or where to start, but in my early 20s I bought a completely stock Tacoma and started building it. It was also my daily driver so I had to tear it down install parts and drive it to work the next day! I learned how to fabricate, weld, body work, automotive paint, and "bigger" maintenance jobs on that truck besides brakes/spark plugs/oil changes.

Got a whole list of things I want done(Not to make it drivable it's reliable and clean inside and out) just to spruce it up and make it last another 20 years. I've already redone the intake and it does get tiresome working on them. TRD said the rear would hold and it did. That car scared me to no end. I was shutting mustangs down with my rebuilt 5MGE motor. I used the TRD book to play with the fuel mix etc. It had a MSD box and coil. I so miss that car. I'm a 4x4 gear head now with a 01 Mitsubishi Montero sport. Watching this video can be the something for today for tip #2! I'm so glad you made this video; I have a project Prelude in a similar state and timeline as your Supra has been, including the having to tow it when moving houses. I haven't fallen out of love with the project, but I'm worried I won't remember where I left off before I moved shop. I wish I'd already been keeping a journal like you recommend. I do write TODO's on cardboard in the shop when I'm in the thick of working on a car. I wish I could attach an image to a RU-vid comment, because the weekend I made the final sprint to finish my wife's Prelude (different car) (see? I _can_ finish a project lol), I wrote all of the remaining tasks with sharpie on a white cardboard brake disk box, and I noticed the lighting looked very dramatic with the unfolded todo list box sitting in the engine bay under the task light so snapped a pic. P.S. Do feel FOMO thinking about all the time that has gone by that you HAVEN'T been driving your project car? Could be a topic for a follow-up video!
@FayeHadley
@FayeHadley Год назад
Dennis, awesome on the Prelude!! That can also be the "little things that you do every day" and BEGIN your notebook - NOW!! It is never too late to start getting organized!! And yes, while i actually rarely feel FOMO (as an introvert, I rarely regret skipping out on a social event or hangout opportunity) but when I think about the years that I could have been driving my car, instead of feeling sad, I tend to feel angry..... angry at the machine shop that messed up my engine. At the time, I was still a fairly new tech, and I trusted the machine shop more than my own abilities, so I never questioned their work, and kept checking everything I had done over and over again, doing and redoing and redoing.... it affected my confidence as a technician and a car builder, and it caused me to fall out of love with my project. Every time I think about it, it makes me want to call up the machine shop and tell them my story, so I try to forget about it. Truth be told, I have called them - several times. Never asked for a refund, never was impolite, and I have never thrown them under the bus even though I have friends with engines there. For some reason, I always protected their honor, but all I asked was for them to apologize, and to make sure that every employee who works there has a straight edge, or access to one, and knows how to use it. Heck, my bill for the labor itself could have bought a straight edge for every employee. But they just pretend that I never existed and they ignore me. So.... I try not to think about it.
@dennisferron8847
@dennisferron8847 Год назад
@@FayeHadley for me it wasn't a machine shop, but a paint and body shop. While my black Prelude was half-apart I had the opportunity to buy a (supposedly) closer to done white one built with the same parts I would have chosen anyway. It was physically in a resto shop owned by friend of the seller who had already negotiated for it to be painted supposedly within a couple weeks. Weeks dragged into months and then a year while I tried to get the paint shop to either let me pay money on top to expedite it OR let me take the car home as is and I wouldn't hold it against them. Instead the owner kept insisting he would get it painted and make it right even as they had problems with the business and break ins. They ghosted me regularly and relocated twice without telling me so I'd drop in unannounced to find the former location empty. Finally they went out of business and moved all the cars to a storage lot and I still don't understand why the owner went to the trouble to move it when he could have told me to just come get it. During all this time this was going on with the white car I couldn't do anything on the black car because of not knowing if it was going to be the parts car or the built car. Eventually I took matters into my own hands and did some sleuthing and found the actual location - in a field - where the white car had been abandoned along with the other cars that had been in the shop. I had to negotiate with the owner of the land to get the fence unlocked and the groundskeeper helped me tow my car home. To the end the business owner insisted it had always been his intention to make things right, but I didn't car about the money (out a few hundred in the end) it was the lost time and lost momentum on the project that was the real harm. Now, the black car is my build chassis and the white car is the parts car. (Besides not painting it and ultimately leaving it in a field, the work they had done on the white car was to apply Bondo a 1/4" thick.) Much like your experience with the machine shop steeling your resolve to learn to machine your own engine, this experience got me to sign up for classes in sheet metal shaping and coachbuilding.
