For those attempting other types of dyes, might be handy to keep the i-dye color intensifier packets! They help brighten things up when mixing your dyes with glue / lotion beds (just a couple drops). I put all my packets in a sealable plastic bottle just for this reason.

Tip for air bubbles. If you use a credit card or ID card and just run the edge of it along the surface of the disc, starting in the middle. It makes it really easy to remove them all. If you haven't already changed your process LOL Its been a few years sense you posted this.

I was apprehensive to sit through a 20 minute video, but so worth it! Thanks for being thorough-- a close friend gave me a plain red Millenium Scorpius to customize and I have been scouring the internet for advice. My question for you is, if I use a yellow dye poly on this (plain, not dark or light really) red disc, do you think it would show through at all? I'd hate to spend so much time cutting only to not get a good stain. I'll poke through your other videos and see if you've tried it but I wanted to ask here first! Your work is really clean and well placed! Thanks so much for taking the time for newbie folks like me :D

B. 4man it will be very difficult to get a light color dye to show on a darker disc. Blue or black will show nicely, but yellow, If the disc takes the dye, will show up orange if at all.

Great video. I am glad someone took the time to explain how it's done. I imagine there are some variations; for example, I suppose people have made less complex stencils that they can cut out prior to putting on the disc to avoid marking the top of the disc with an exacto blade. Do you dull the point of the blade? I'm leery of working on the top surface with sharp objects.
@sharilynpost
@sharilynpost 4 года назад
Little Gray doing it like he did gets you closer to having your pattern where you want or need it to be I attempted putting the pattern on after I cut it out and it was very difficult to get it centered and whatnot without messing up the sticky ness by having to remove it to make adjustments, but I’d say no on dulling the blade I couldn’t even see the marks it makes after cutting out the pattern the edge of the dye makes it so you can’t see it, but if you have a brand new very sharp exacto blade you don’t need to push down very hard to gut threw the paper it takes a lot of force to damage the disc

You can buy stencil cutting machines so the transfer paper goes directly on the already cut stencil,weed the black parts out and then place the already weeded stencil on the disc. Laser pointer can be helpful for centering.

Using a vinyl cutter would be a faster way to generate your designs. You would cut-out your stencil using adhesive-backed vinyl, 'weed-out' (remove) the actual design and discard, and then use the remaining outside vinyl material (the 'negative space') as your stencil. All you would need is a relatively inexpensive vinyl cutter like a 'Cricket'. Google: Vinyl cutters.

How do you get such dark blacks? I used a bit of acetone in a detergent mix and got a dull, faded stain on a white disc. Used a plain water mix with a bit of acetone, trying to go over the same area and there was no change. The contacts paper on the other hand is now a deep purple. What am I doing wrong?
@RideWarrior92
@RideWarrior92 6 лет назад
I use just plain water and dye powder mix. I use just enough water to dissolve the powder so it's not watered down and I have the highest concentration of dye. Basically a pickle jar of water and a whole pack of dye. I also leave the disc in the dye over night to maximize the amount color that the disc soaks in. (So about 12 hours). My contact paper comes off purple as well so that is normal. Another factor is plastic type, some take dye better than others, in this video is innova star plastic, which I have noticed gives a brighter color compared to champion plastic. Hope this helps!

Ben Burwinkel try adding a little heat, I've read that it helps the dye soak into the plastic, but be careful not to heat too much otherwise you may warp the disc. Otherwise just give the disc more time in the dye. The longer you leave it, the darker it will be. I usually leave mine over night (about 12 hours). Glad you found this tutorial helpful!!
@RideWarrior92
@RideWarrior92 6 лет назад
Also, if you are using the same batch of dye for all of these discs, you may have used it all up and there is no more dye for the disc to soak up. Try mixing a new batch of dye and see if you get better results.

It all depends on the disc, and how the plastic takes the dye. You can take 2 discs from the same manufacturing batch, put them in the same dye, at the same time, for the same amount of time, and they will look completely different when you take them out. I try to maximize the amount of dye by only using just enough water to dissolve the powder dye. So I use 1 pickle jar of water for 1 pack of dye. This makes it more concentrated and allows the disc to take more dye quickly. Hope this helps!

@jayedwin98020
@jayedwin98020 3 года назад
@@gordonyork6638: I personally would only use 'vector' files. They don't pixelate like a raster images, and they're very 'clean'. You can take a 1" square, vector image and enlarge it 1000 % or more, and there's no pixelation at all. The only way I've seen a raster image work at all, is to have started with a very "large" image file, that then has been greatly reduced prior to cutting/printing. Just not a very good idea! If you absolutely have to use a raster image, I'd only print the image on a solid piece of vinyl, add a 'perimeter' circle around your image, then vinyl-cut your circle out, and then place the circle on your disc. If you wanted a 'clear' look, use a clear vinyl. I'm not sure how much weight that would add to your disc, or if it would even be an 'approved' way of imaging a disc, with regards to the 'governing body' for 'disc competitions'. You would want to check that.

When cutting, i only use enough pressure on the knife to cut through the paper and contact paper. you can pretty easily tell when you are through both. you may get some lines in the disc but they are so small that i can't see them. the light cuts in the disc actually help with getting a more defined line on the edges of your dyed areas and do not effect the flight characteristics of the disc in any noticeable way.

awesome man! thanks for the tips. 1 more thing, what kind of plastic did u use in video?

MrAmouradian star plastic. from my understanding this only works with higher end plastics like star and champion. and other brand's equivalents. dx and other lower plastics either fade quickly or don't take the dye at all.

I just wanna say use gloves when working with the acetone. It dries out your hands alot! And use as little acetone as possible as the acetone actually eats a little of the disc.. telling you this just in case someone wants to dip the whole disc in acetone 😂

Could you use a vinyl Decal to do this with instead of the paper?
