In this first of a two-part series on how to still hunt for deer I will take you through four keys to help you learn the skills of stalking deer. Included in this video are not only important hunting tactics but also several encounters I have had with deer while still hunting. I will teach you a simple method of still hunting that is ideal for beginners and seasoned hunters alike - something I call 'Doing the Five Step.' I will explain locations to target your still hunting endeavors and keys to making it work including paying attention to wind and thermals, bedding and browsing locations, and how to stay hidden as much as possible. Whether you hunt deer in woods, farmland, swamps, fields or any other terrain you can add still hunting to your arsenal of methods to harvest a deer.

As a beginner hunter, This video in particular really put into perspective the foundational knowledge I needed to understand how to traverse through the woods. Most videos i watched could not express the intricacies of still hunting through the woods, i would watch them and not understand the goal until I found this specific video. I come back to it often because it is the only one that explains hunting for the absolute begginer. Your teaching style and your ability to simply is what we need in the hunting community please comeback and make more videos.

Thank you for the #UMMazing video. The 5 Step is a simple strategy! Yesterday, I sat for three hours in sub-freezing temperature, and I almost froze! I could’ve been doing the 5 Step to help stay warm…moving! Your comment about sitting for hours or doing the 5 Step really resonated with me…thanks again! Happy Christmas 2023! 🧡🎯🦌🎄

I do this every now and then during the heart of the rut. Nothing more exciting than having a buck chasing a doe and having a close encounter on the ground. Thanks for the advice!

Great video I always start moving too fast. I’m going to try the 5 step and glassing this year.

I can sit nearly 6 hours in a blind or stand without seeing deer at times. If I have patience to do that I have patience to still hunt way I see it

I noticed you're not in full camo or a ghillie suit. Can you really get into range with blue jeans and baseball cap?

Yes Absolutely doable, silence and body oder play a bigger role than camo.

You gotta watch one of the videos that show how deer see the world. No matter what color you wear, they pretty much always see you as a dark green blob lol. I’d be careful wearing blue though, I hear they see that as very vibrant.

Good video but your wearing blue... that's the one color deer can see the best.

No rhtym to steps. Slow intermittent and very non cadence pace with the wind to your face.

That will work, too. Thanks for watching!

@@SeedstoDreamsDeer I have walked up on deer like this 3 times in 31 years of squirrel hunting but never from trying to hunt deer on the ground with a bow or xbow. Would love to someday. Thanks for your video.

@@Dutch.1722 yeah, there is nothing like it. Each hunting season I usually have half a dozen encounters with deer at 5 yards or less while still hunting. Some have been bruiser bucks mostly on PA public. Unfortunately, I usually only risk videorecording when it is something I don't want to take a shot at...but it creates awesome memories. Take care!

@@SeedstoDreamsDeer So your technique, in a nut shell, be very quiet, move slowly 5 steps, and scan the area in front and to the side with binoculars. My question to you is how do you walk with the wind? Is it always to your face as you approach? I ask this as I am a sentloc believer. Made a huge pile of deer with this suit since 2005 and it sill works. But to hunt public in the Shawnee Forest its not practical to wear the suit for a mile walk and its cumbersome to put it in a pack with saddle and steps. So this year I don't want to use it when hunting in the bottoms. Thanks again. Amazing you can get within 5 yards of deer 12 times in the season.

@@Dutch.1722 usually half a dozen per hunting season but many more times throughout the year scouting. Yes, that's a pretty good sum of my method for beginners. After you use the five step for a while you start learning when and where to move and how much based on experience so at this point I am not really thinking number of steps. My senses of seeing and hearing are always on full alert. As I got better at still hunting I learned to not be a slave to the rules (# of steps, direction travelling, etc.) because terrain isn't linear and there are lots of variables in each context...but starting with these 4 methods will help you build towards success until you can be more adaptive in your approach. As far as wind, I talk about it at 10:27 in the video and utilize a crosswind as much as possible. I explain my reasoning in the video. I am always chucking milkweed especially in areas with crazy winds and thermals. Looks like you are in IL?
