Either it needs a new battery, or it's at end of life and needs to be replaced.
Smoke alarm devices have a specific recommended life, often 10 years. If your detector has reached the recommended limit, it's time to replace all in your house.

@Jack Brown - Surprising. My next recommendation is to look up the manual for the detector (should be easy to find online with the model number). See the troubleshooting section or call the manufacturer. Maybe it's got a fault and you could get a free warranty replacement.

I agree that you should buy from the same company as the ones you are replacing if they are hardwired. The interconnects should not be mixed across different companies. However, if the company has a newer model, I'd choose that over the same one. For example, buying a model with a 10-year sealed battery is a good idea, but they weren't available back when the old ones were installed. You should also consider getting one that does CO in addition to smoke.

I'm having such a horrible time - my alarm doesn't have the flap that disconnects the hard wire. I cannot switch mains off, as then I'll have no lights - I really can't get any sleep with incessant beeping - tomorrow I will call a electrician to remove alarm completely - if rather live woth the risk than go another sleepless night. - these alamrns should be battery powered only

My Hard wire smoke alarms kept going off, it's 0330 now. Screw the outer top off, pull the fire alarm down so you can see the wires, grab the connector at the base of the fire alarm, wiggle the connector free from the alarm and don't forget to remove the battery or it will still chirp and/or go off. I took all 5 down. I have a security system in my house with a fire alarm in their security package also. Not sure if I will replace them of not since I have the security ones also, but that decision will be made when I get back to sleep. One thing I can say, thank God for youtube and the internet to let me find out how to disconnect these little sob's. Good Night

Take it apart and there are 2 metal switches. SW1Test and SW2Hush. Tape the hush switch down and cut the test switch with small scissors or wire cutters. After that it will never beep randomly, and if it goes off because it detects smoke, it will always shut off after 2 beeps

+Jack Brown 4 years should still be within the warranty period. Call the manufacturer and get it replaced for free. Also, take the battery out and unplug the power cord - is it still beeping now? If so, its coming from somewhere else.

when you removed it from its ceiling connection you made it look so easy to remove..I was up on a 6 foot ladder struggling with mine for 15 minutes.could NOT get it disconnected..then, putting the new battery in was an issue being up on that ladder and having weak hands.it took.me five more minutes and several tries to figure out what direction to.put the new battery in correctly. that's the step that's never shown slowly and with clear directions.

I suppose that you aren't old or short and/or weak hands. Some of us are. Maybe a different type ladder would be more stable if you can afford one or have room in your apartment for it. I certainly don't. And it's not worth breaking a hip over. Please don't judge others just because "what's the problem? I can do it" mindset.

You can turn off the circuit breaker and remove it, but you don't want to go without smoke detectors, so I'd only do that while working on the system.
