I think my best advice with binge eating or any eating disorder is to realize it takes a lot of time and work to overcome. It’s rarely a habit you can kick in a week. If you can work a little more on mindset shift and learning about nutrition (meal prepping if you can). One day you will have a sudden realization of how much better your relationship with food is and how far you’ve come. You may still have bad days but you’ll start having more good days than bad days and remember you can always “reset” the next day and eat normally like nothing happened. Also don’t deny yourself food you love or eat food you hate bc it’s “good for you.” If you want ice cream, have ice cream just get a smaller scoop and don’t get a giant potter of it so if you binge it isn’t as much.

@Emelia39
@Emelia39 Год назад
@@patricia__alves_ I don't think meal prepping is the absolute key to ending it, but it does help me bc I get triggered by thinking too much about food, so the less time I spend thinking about it (e.g. cooking, trying to figure out what I want to eat), the less likely I get stressed and fall into disordered patterns. That being said, there is no one size fits all with recovery and it's about finding something that works for you bc EDs are so diverse. Hope you're doing well!

In general, reducing my carb intake (significantly but not drastically) as a person who previously had an unbalanced, 90% carb diet has almost gotten rid of my emotional/binge eating. Getting my macros in balance and reducing the amount of breads and sweets in my diet has helped me relearn what hunger and fullness feel like and stop using food as a stress cope. I eat the same amount of calories as before, but in healthier portions and made up of more whole foods , fat, and protein… don’t have those emotional sugar crashes that make me want to eat an entire loaf of bread in one sitting anymore

the “clean plate club” mindset taught to kids causes so much inner conflict and shame. literally telling kids to ignore their bodies own cues… is so bad for development. tell the kids to eat when they’re full and don’t eat when they’re hungry but eat when they’re sad and hate how they look and constantly work to achieve a particular but ever changing standard of beauty.. no wonder so many people struggle with disordered eating and body dysmorphia. when i first started going to the gym, barely tween-age, i wanted to change my body to make other people like it more. now i go to the gym because it makes me happier, healthier, and stronger. thank you for being such a safe and honest space for us who have not always had a great relationship with food. ❤

what's helped me a bit is that if I feel that "snacky" urge come on, to replace my snacks with some healthier ones (apples and peanut butter has been my go-to!). I feel like the healthy ones tend to fill me up faster, plus, oftentimes if its emotional, Ill be craving something specific (like chips), and only having the option of the healthier one will put me out of the mood to binge-snack :P Ive also found that the cravings for chips and candy tend to go away if I can get through the first week or two. and if it turns out I really did need a snack, then ill feel full and satisfied instead of bloaty!

This video came just in time! I've decided to go on a diet, but I was worried about the triggers. It is actually one of the most genuine and helpful videos in my opinion... very realistic! The tips come from experience, and I love the encouraging tone in her voice. Now, I'm really curious about how she eats when going on a vacation, and it would be great if she spoke about that in another video. Keep up the good work!!
@theleanbeefpatty
@theleanbeefpatty Год назад
Thankyou manar! Actually about the vacation question: the majority of the time in my day to day life, I eat a moderate diet where I don’t track anything very strictly. Sort of like intuitive eating with a bit of guidelines. It’s quite rare and not for extended periods where I’ll strictly do anything (but if I want to reach a specific goal that requires me to do that, I’ll do that. Not being unrealistic in my expectations tho ofc). Then when I’m on vacation, ideally I’d be in one of my normal moderate/intuitive periods and just be like that on vacation, but if I’m not, I don’t like to ruin a potentially once in a life time experience with a diet. Personally, I think that has the capacity to be more negative overall. So I would go off my diet, keep in mind some general concepts like: if I eat these 5 very rich and filling foods I’m going to feel sick, but if I have two now and two tomorrow, i won’t feel sick…I’ll do something like that. And when I return from my vacation, if I want to return to my diet rather than my normal, homeostatic lifestyle, I’ll do that. Hopefully that made sense 🙏

That's a real video, Patty. I've had issues with diet due to all the social reasons you listed and due to ADHD. Dopamine-seeking through food has been like a drug for me throughout life. The piece of advice that you mentioned about timing meals has worked best for me. Basically setting myself up to not ever feel hunger throughout the day. Therapy taught me not to treat myself like a piece of shit when i fail. Instead of spiraling down into an existential depression and ennui, I catch myself and begin the climb up again. But that's like a muscle you train - it's hard to do at first when you're used to tearing yourself down all the time. I'm still not perfect at it, but I'm working up all the time.
@peacemaster8117

ADHD has a statistically significant relationship with obesity, and like you said I think it's related to dopamine seeking. Not getting mad at yourself when you fail is certainly a crucial step towards building yourself up to succeed.

A good mind healthy thing to do is to stay creative, like patty said, drawing, painting etc. Other things like sewing, maybe even decide to dedicate you’re time to that one thing you’ve been putting off, like laundry or doing some yard work. Deep cleaning your bathroom. Pretty much anything that needs your full attention. ( getting those things done will also make you feel better in general). Personally I love getting lost in drawing or sewing. I really struggle with staying consistent with nutrition so thank you for this video. Something I’ve learn to control my emotional eating and boredom eating is doing the broccoli test. When I get that urge to snack I ask myself am I hungry enough to eat a big bowl of broccoli or am I just want to eat to cure boredom or stress. Usually that puts my emotions in place so I don’t overeat on chips. It doesn’t need to be broccoli just pick a food you don’t like and just tolerate but willing to eat.
@Tofugirl361
@Tofugirl361 5 месяцев назад
Something that’s been helping me, is when I do indulge not choosing the most indulgent option. A lot of times we struggle to stop eating appropriately because the food is designed to be so good and addicting. Make sure your meals aren’t incredibly tasty, and let super tasty foods be a rare treat. I’m not saying all your meals should taste bad, but be mindful of how tasty what you eat regularly is. If you’re craving ice cream, why not get a halo top or a frozen yogurt bar? Or perhaps a frozen fruit bar? If you’re craving chips why not try some veggies and hummus, or those harvest snaps? If you want a burger load it up with veggies and light sauce. The goal is compromise. I think a part of us binge eaters deep down miss binging because we think it’s being free from diet culture, or we get to eat whatever we want, but that is not going to help you reach your goals or keep you healthy. And you’re in an irrational mind state. Your thoughts are just suggestions, you are the creator of your universe Bargaining is key. If you’re on the fence about eating something decide if you’d rather eat this thing now, or perhaps something tasty later. Being in control (which you are!) is the key to a healthy lifestyle.

I was doing pretty well with my health, treated long term health issues (had undiagnosed SIBO for months) and was doing great. Until I went to the doctor for a regular physical last month and saw my weight. The nurse actually asked me to remember it for her to record it later. I lost 20 lbs without trying to diet. And since then my past ED brain has been working hard to try to get me not to eat anything “bad” to mess up and gain the weight back. Especially since I’ve been very stressed recently. This video came at a great time even though it is a bit triggering. Thank you still for making it

Tracking my food has been helpful. My fitness pal has NOT, almost gave me an eating disorder because of it guilting me into eating like 10 more grams of sodium etc..and then I'd punish myself by not eating for the rest of the day. :') Chronometer has been 100% game changer and does not punish or reward my eating cues just gives me raw data ❤ as always great vid ❤ I'm a stress binge eater and my coping mechanism is to keep a large quantity of something sweet like ice cream in the freezer. I will have a couple bites and maybe some frozen fruit with it. I know this won't work for everyone but for me I just crave the taste and know that a couple bites won't kill me or ruin my diet.

Thank you for this 🥺 not only did I randomly stumble across you one day and was inspired enough to pluck up the courage to go to the gym, but content like this is comforting. I've been trying to keep a 1000 calorie deficit and without fail I always end up binging at some point during the week usually because something stressful made me dive for literally everything I could get my hands on. Then the guilt spiral. I'll try to be gentler with myself

My coping mechanism: I play "kick the can", but in my mind. When I THINK I really just HAVE to have (insert sweet treat here) I'll tell myself, Ok, you can have it in 30 min. Many times I get distracted enough to forget this "craving". For the times I can't fool myself, well then, I just allow myself to have said sweet treat. It helps me determine when I really want it or if I'm just in a routine of having something sweet.

going to buy groceries not being hungry also helps , and having in advance what type of foods you want. I go for buying what I tend to dismiss which are vegetables, nuts and berries, all the other carbs and protein I get them on autopilot, and don't be afraid of full eggs, natural trainee's tend to use those fatty acids in a better way. If you feel more tempted to cheat, your deficit might be too big , we tend to overeat while on mass phases and undereat more than required on cuts.

I took a note from those who stay super skinny even though they went too far. The key is extreme control. I am the one who controls what I eat, when I stop, whatever. When you are overweight you don't understand "normal" eating. The best thing to do is completely remove emotion and use logic. Find your calorie maintenance through control and experimentation. It's easy when you have proper knowledge and control. The best part is, when you are super hungry, food actually taste way better, which is honestly pretty awesome. I get hungrier than a normal person, that's why I am fat. People like me have to be hungry often to be at a good weight. It's not a big deal. People have too much attachment to food like it's sacred or some crap like that. They act like they have to be satiated all the time or make stupid excuses. Self control is actually a very good thing that every overweight person lacks. Binging is the epitome of zero self control. If you choose to indulge you can choose to stop and choose to lower your intake appropriately for the next meal. If you did it right and have extra cals why not have a treat. Emotional reactions are the reason people fail. A reward system is actually an exceptional tool to help you stay on track.

Yup, depression hits and so do the snacks, this happens and has happened a lot. Although lately I've gotten better with it, as I think identifying it as emotional eating with oneself helps to see it more clearly. It's hard to break for sure, and learning more about depression and see where it's coming. I see many weird situations where my spirit is just broken, but I have to see it as not really my problem and people can just be really terrible, especially if I know I'm not that terrible. It's not my fault that some people are terrible, especially plenty within my life, or those that I have to see often, so I can't let it get to me too much and just move forward. It's hard to feel anything when all you know within life is unreachable interests, and crazy types that you aren't interested in getting to know or have known and aren't looking to go in those directions again. These are in addition to time constraints, raising kids, house issues and some more. Things get better as kids age, work gets completed, and life gets on some balanced footing. The other stuff takes some time, but personally I end up being a rejector of others because the terriblness ratio is just too high and too constant. Big metro areas can be a pompous classist shit show instead of normal social connections. Also after drinking I'm trying to calm my snack drunchies in place of like two vitamin water, with maybe light snacks.

Ahh yes. Depression.. Big beast to tackle for anyone. Being able to look at these things for what they are and potentially where they’re coming from rather than drowning them in a maladaptive coping mechanism is both difficult to even start and uncomfortable when you’re in it… sounds like you’ve taken steps in the right direction tho so I commend you!
@bitdgamer3891
@bitdgamer3891 Год назад
@@theleanbeefpatty they're definitely steps, and before I drowned for weeks on end and emotional eating was a coping mechanism, still is at times, but yes getting better. I'm also not going down for the count in weeks anymore. This was years in the making, so it isn't abracadabra and depression may hit harder for some than others. The origin of where it arrives is many starting points, which then they tag or triple or quadruple or more team up on me. Good video post, many have problems and this is a well known one of coping.

I've struggled with binge eating my whole life, and it's definitely a constant battle. First off, thank you Patty for the way you addressed the subject gently, it's one I'm sensitive about. Because as I'm sure you understand having faced your own dysfunctional relationship with food, shame is often used and rarely helpful. I knew I could trust you to keep it kind. I'll add a few things to the list of coping skills that have helped me. Dancing around my apartment singing along to songs I love, making a hot cup of tea, spending time with people who make me laugh even if its just online, and repeating kind mantras to myself. I appreciate these vids more that I can express in words, it's so important not to feel alone in the struggles we face. Nothing but grateful love here ❤

As someone still in recovery from disordered eating habits, distinguishing between actual hunger signals and emotional or bored eating has been one of the things I've had to work on longest. Still not perfect, but like you said I found that not shaming and punishing myself when I do emotionally eat and simply moving on with my life has been so helpful. That, and knowing that I have certain trigger foods (eating chips in moderation will never be a strong suit for me).
@saterdei
@saterdei Год назад
Pretty important topic tonight, thanks for adding it to your videos. I'm pretty sure I don't eat emotionally, but I had to take time and assess myself for a few months because I'd been overeating. My personal observations and solutions: 1. I mostly used to eat when I had little work to do. So, keeping myself busy filled me up. Like you said, actual hunger manifests more seldom than people think, it's mostly a force of habit that caused me to eat so frequently. 2. I rarely prepped food at home. This meant takeout, and fast food has good offers for buying more food, so I'd eat like that 2-3 times a week. If anyone is wondering, 2-3 times a month is my current frequency of ordering food. How did I prepare food at home: I bought a lot of containers, fruit, bread, meat and cheese of my choice - then I made a cold snack the night before and had it ready to take with me in the morning. I think this helped me more than anything else. 3. I eat fast. Like, whole pizza in 4' fast. I still do, there's no fixing that because it's just deeply ingrained in me, I've been eating this way for over 30 years. However, I keep track of when I had my last meal. If I figure out it hasn't been too long since, I'll doubt myself and do something else until I'm certain I'm hungry. This comes back to #1 eventually. 4. I started exercising again. Every day at work, I'd wait until lunchtime and dream of all the dirty food I could eat, but after spending some time working out, I realized that on those days I only want what's best for my body. Greasy food doesn't taste good - it's just the promise of the salt hiding underneath. Sweets actually do taste good, but after dieting for a single week, I couldn't eat as much sugar without getting overwhelmed. That's... all I can think of right now, but I've lost 14lbs in 3 months, so at least it works for me, and I hope it helps other people too.
