Today we're getting expert tips from trichologist and hair stylist Jay Small who believes it's possible in some cases to reverse greying, re-pigment and protect our hair color as we age.
He is a co-founder of Arey Gray, which creates supplements and topical products to help achieve this.
We discuss the causes of greying, the worst (and best) thing you can do when you start showing signs of grey, the stage of greying where you have the best chance with natural interventions, the impact lifestyle and dietary changes can make - PLUS a free tip for preserving hair pigment and condition that somehow had never occurred to me before!

Funny how our bodies are too lazy and unwilling to produce pigment for our hair but they are all too happy to pump out the pigment for the liver spots, moles, freckles and melasma as we grow old. ..

This guy is on to something. I've personally experienced greying during stressful periods, only for colour to return (repigmentation) when I manage my stress. I'm now making a concerted effort to manage my stress. I'm also eating a diet that helps support me through stress, nuts (high in copper), NAC, magnesium glycinate, water and lots of anti-inflammatory foods. Jay is on the button regarding diet and lifestyle management.

@@fionaH101 my mom was tinting for a few years when she started getting grey, not dying but tinting (less toxic abd more natural looking). Then one day she just got tired of it and let it grow out. The last 10+ years she's literally all white, and I think it makes her look younger. White is the new blond 😅 I think an obvious tint makes you look older. Besides, grey is in nowadays - when even 20 year olds tint their hair grey ( for fun), you know grey is not taboo any longer.

I love my grey hair but I would be interested in a shampoo and conditioner to help the texture. Especially in humid summertime. Love that theirs is unscented. The other thing I have learned from many health experts is that a lot of us don't absorb or assimilate what we eat properly. We are eating all the right things but the body isn't able to use the food properly. Believe it or not, being in a good frame of mind, calm and not rushing my meals has been very helpful. I love a hat. Especially in the summer heat :). Would love recommendations for budget friendly hair products that help texture. Thanks

Thanks Clare. Great information. I am always amazed when people reverse their greys after chemotherapy/ immunosuppresant therapy. Something in the treatment must be affecting that one grey hair gene mentioned here. I do take many of the beneficial vitamins seperately. Although if i take too much selenium i get alopecia ( typically at the crown). I still have grey hair so i wonder how much i am absorbing the vitamins.
@thehonestchannel

I escaped a lot of life stressors until my mid to late 40s. I had very little gray hair. And then in my late 40s all sorts of extreme stress that completely altered my life. It didn't seem to take long before I was 20% gray, then 30%, now I am about 70-80% gray (the last time I looked, lol, as it seems like the gray is taking over so quickly). At about age 50 I dyed my hair for the first time - the few grays at time weren't all that noticeable, but I just thought my hair would look better with a warmer tone and I was curious about using hair dye as I knew it would take time to learn the technique and best shade for me. But the gray became "fast and furious" / relentless after age 50. People used to marvel at how my natural hair had little to no gray as I was entering my 50s - including my hairdresser, but at about age 50 and with all the stress, that seemed like overnight I was showing a lot of gray.

I'm starting to get some greys and when they become more pronounced, I plan to get low/highlights. I have some white hair on the front left side of my face, and it blends well with my brown hair. I got tired of having my hair colored, and let it grow out in 2020, during the pandemic. I've been using Reviv Serums' RevivHair Grey Hair Reverse serum daily for months now in a desperate attempt to slow down these shiners that pop up mere days after I've been for a root touch-up. It has Melanogray, Silverfree, Wisegrade, Greyverse & Darkenyl actives and enough peptides to make your head spin, but all to no avail. These products always have very impressive before and after pictures, but I think only very few people are among the lucky ones that have similar results. Yet here I find myself looking at the products mentioned in this video and considering giving them a go, just because I so badly want to stop spending 15 minutes every morning attacking these little buggers with an eyebrow pencil or struggling with root spray. I feel like those old fellas they used to show in the infomercials spraying their scalps in the golf club bathrooms and going back out with a smile. They never showed what happened once they got out in the sun and it started melting off. The struggle is real.

Hi, Yes it is safe to use Arey To The Root Serum with a laser light cap, I would recommend waiting until the serum has absorbed / dried before starting the laser cap treatment.

The herb called FoTi will cause melanin production. I stopped taking it because it does thin blood, but when I did take it, I saw my eyebrow hairs that were white start to grow in dark again. I could see the line of demarcation in the hair, dark at the root and white at the other end. I faithfully colored my hair, so I'm not sure how much it affected the hair on my head. If i decide to go gray, I'll probably take FoTi again.

So he said that the reason we go grey on our front hairline is the overlap of chemicals?! Wish he'd said more and explained how to avoid this.

Many years ago before even used chemicals our ancestors still got white hair, especially at the front. I read it was to show superiority within your 'tribe', as you got older. Also a lot of older men who have never used a lot of chemicals on their face often have white hair at the temples.

Just try to use beauty products that are cleaner. You can wash your face with organic jojoba oil, wipe with a warm wet face towel after massaging. You can use brands that are more natural, or use things such as shea butter to moisturise your face.
@JaySmall-ny4sp
@JaySmall-ny4sp Месяц назад
Hi, This is Jay Small from the interview. In terms of chemical overlap and the front hair line, this is only one of many things that can contribute to your hair line turning grey and eventually white first. In my experience the pigment near the front hair line can change earlier and at a higher percentage then the rest of the head specifically the back. One of the reasons is chemical overlap from beauty products that contain harsh (not clean) ingredients. The other factors that can specifically effect the front hair line is sun exposure, chemical dyes and relaxers. Throughout my career I have observed thousands of clients and these are the causation factors associated with those that have had either premature or concentrated grey / white hair at the front hair line.

When it comes to frizzy hair, I always look for a remedy. One remedy that really worked was a Pantene Pro-v shampoo that I bought abroad. It was like a magic, my hair were smooth like silk and under different type of water, so it wasn't just the water, it was the Shampoo. I feel like in US the shampoos all make your hair frizzy and unrully, just so you buy million other products to fix it🤦‍♀️

The only thing I am sure we've all noticed around us is that high stress, long period of stress, trauma, shock....can make them come faster. Beyond that it's genetic.

I took a tablespoon of black strands molasses daily for and entire month before I quit. It was so hard to take. But later I noticed my grey hairs had a section of brown in between. (So from my scalp was grey, then the section of brown, and then grey to the end of the strand). I’m sure it was due to the black strap molasses. But I’d rather be grey. It was gross. Lol

That sounds interesting! I may try that for a month or so (between colouring:) - to compare my new growth, but dilute it in glass of warm water and drink. I do sip on chlorophyll in warm water, due to copper benefits, and the black strap molasses being high in B vitamins, sounds like a good blend to try... and get it over with, consuming once daily. ☺
