I am so glad I found you today. I am binge watching. Back in the classroom after covid lockdown and I am realizing the kids are completely out of control. I need to seriously take stock of what's happening and reel them in. Your suggestions are amazing!! Thank you. Are there any classroom management books you can recommend that you tend particularly helpful?

Thank you Sonja. I have been getting that request lately and I am working on a book myself. But for now let me look into some options. Give me about a week or so :)

thank you!!! I am usually a short term sub but now I am a long term substitute in this current 2021 teacher shortage - and all of these videos are sooooo very helpful!!!! Usually I leave after a day, or a week: all manageable. But now I am there after a month, 2 months, the dynamics change. Thank you!!

Hello! I just discovered you today and I'm hoping you can help. I have an 11 year old son, he's a new 6th grader. He has been taking medication for ADHD and anxiety for the last couple years. He attends a Montessori school that goes up to 8th grade. He has had the same teacher for the last couple years and this is the third year with her. She is actually really good and has developed a connection with him. But he will get into some kind of a tough time and refuses to do any work and just lays on the floor. It's become quite a distraction in class and even one of his best friends has commented that it's getting annoying. In Montessori, they have a large chunk of time to do their work, it's nearly 3 hours. He has just not been doing it. And then during class activities, he will start making periodic noises. I'm assuming he wants attention. The teacher ends up having him leave the room but this is usually after an hour or 90 minutes of trying to get him back on track. I love your 4 steps in this video what she could have him do for the replacement behavior. Can you help? Thanks so much!!

Hi Gina, my replacement behavior suggestions would be: When the student is frustrated or stressed (if this is the reason/function) -he will remain in his seat and ask for help. -he will remain in his seat and ask for a break (not necessarily verbally). - he will go to a safe space in the classroom (laying on the floor is not safe) for # minutes then return to his seat and begin work or ask for help. Hope this helps:)

Hello I am switching to 7th grade I don’t know what kind of classroom management/rewards/consequences is best I am coming from primary grades can you advise me? I used to use class dojo but my teens say not to use that with middle school. Thank you!

Hi Joy! Ok, some ideas for rewards for primary students are positive notes home, small tangibles (erasers, pencils, stickers), student certificates, choice time, verbal praise, sticker book or chart, thumbs up or special signals. Consequence ideas are: verbal redirection (keep it simple 2-3 words), chill out carpet, sad face on chart or no happy face earned, mini conference with teacher. Hope this helps :)

@@FeedTheirNeeds she’s going to middle school not early childhood grades. What suggestion do you have for grades 6-8?
@FeedTheirNeeds
@FeedTheirNeeds 2 года назад
Hi Joy, sorry, I misread your comment. Here are a few rewards and consequences for 6-8 grades. REWARDS: (1) Verbal praise and positive signals (2) Positive Shout outs " I want to give a shout to Table one for staying on topic and completing the group task!!" (3) Positive Post-its- a positive brief comment on a post-it that can be placed on student desk. Can be written/typed in the moment or ahead of time (4) Choice time- to make it seem more mature, replace the word "choice" with the school mascot. Computers, social table, Crafts, board games/puzzles are great starters. (4) Class DJ (5) VIP table or basket (6) Student Certificates and/or coupons CONSEQUENCES: (1) Time owed: from choice time (2) Reflection Sheet: I typically use four questions. What happened? Why? What could you have done instead? How Can I help? (3) Loss of points (4) Chill out/Break Table/Area (5) 1:1 teacher - student conference

@@FeedTheirNeeds I certainly benefited from you misreading it. I sub for first and second graders, and I appreciate your suggestions. I find it very hard to control the talking for the whole day and a few to stay in their seats. For my sake, please continue to include the primary kids in your content. Thanks.

This might work with one or two misbehaving students, but what if 35% or over a third of your class has troublesome behavior??? Help!!!
@FeedTheirNeeds
@FeedTheirNeeds Год назад
Hi Rachel :) If a significant section of your class is demonstrating challenging behavior, do a behavior audit and categorize by behaviors and/or functions. This will give you a bird's eye view of what you are facing. So you may have 3 attention seekers, 4 power seekers, and 2 avoiders OR you may have 5 call outers, 3 tappers, and 2 out-of-seaters. Decide on the strategies you will use for each group. Try to stick with no more than 1-2 strategies per group. Then plan out how you will implement the strategies during the school day. Just to give you an analogy, think of how many schools look at reading groups. They are below level, on level, and above level. Each group has an intervention or program to address the needs. This is similar. Hope this helps:)
