I appreciate your videos. It's clear that you have a lot of classroom experience. I can tell by the examples you give, the ideas you share, and the way you talk. You aren't a university level researcher or an administrator who has these impractical ideas. This makes me trust your advice. I really need support with myself: how do I self-regulate so that I do not escalate myself or the student(s)?

Hi Ms. Xiong. Great question. Here are a few tips: Great question… (1) Know your triggers. Do a self-check and ask yourself which behaviors irritate, frustrate or find most offensive. (2) Have 1-2 ways to calm yourself in class (when you can’t leave), in school (still at school, but not necessarily with students) and after school (at home or outside of school). My favorites were counting to 5 with deep breathing, internal self-talk (reminding myself of the why, affirmations of identity), stress walks (during planning or lunch) and talking it out with a trusted friend. (3) Have some go-to responses that you use in certain situations or for certain behaviors. This will keep you consistent, fair and less likely to escalate (4) Shift your mindset from “why are these behaviors happening?” to “I expect some misbehaviors, it’s a part of child growth and development” , “Their misbehavior is not a personal attack against me, they lack simply lack coping skills and good behavior habits” and “This misbehavior is temporary. I have options, support and skills.” Hope this helps :)

@@FeedTheirNeedsThanks for sharing however the rebellious students I know will provide push back for every suggestions except the one on one meeting . I want to make an example out of those students .

Hi Joy, sorry for the late reply. Most of the consequences I am sharing would depend on the situation. But if I were to have an ordered list, an example would be: 1- Verbal redirection or correction 2- Time owed 3-Change of seat (this could include chill out,) 3- Reflection sheet followed by 1:1 conference Hope this helps:)

I'm a prek teacher how do you manage the classroom when you have a student who is not only disruptive but engages in dangerous behavior ie.- throwing chairs and objects, using all objects as weapons, and climbing on tables, desks, and bookshelves?

Have you tried social stories ? Also with these dangerous behaviors I would document document document and submit a referral to the counselor and/or special education team. This child may have an emotional disability

@@dreamydesignsbyalia the students do have emotional disabilities however the caregivers have in my case have declined counseling and have had their child pulled in one of the cases.

What if he/she is disruptive while in cool down?

Hello First explain that the cool down is not a punishment, but an opportunity to make better behavior choices without consequence. But in order to keep the opportunity, the students must cool down within a designated amount of time - 30 sec-1 min or less if you prefer. If disruptive, I would give 1 maybe 2 prompts to "cool down" and you will have to specific with what that looks and sounds like. And I don't mean 1-2 prompts for EVERY time student is sent to cool down. If still disruptive, student loses the opportunity and moves straight to the CLASS consequence.

It's not clear to me: so I let the s be disruptive and count the time...but what about the rest of the ss: shall we all just sit and watch the disruptive s and miss learning time? How do we get That back?

Hi Elena, good question. Some disruptive behaviors can be ignored or "taught over". But it seems like you are referring to behavior that halts teaching. I am making a new video on strategies for disruptive behaviors, but in the meantime, I would suggest verbal redirection (tell student what behavior they should do in brief steps), proximity control ( walk over to or stand near the student as a physical prompt -not threat- to stop the behavior), have student change seat or do a push back in their chair in addition to the owed time. If these are not working, start looking at the pattern of the behavior to determine function. Hope this is helpful to you.:)

Hm, that would be difficult to track the time of permanent disbehavior of like 6 students at the same time, won't it?

It could work if the students are engaged in the same or similar behaviors and they do it as a pack. For example, I have seen a group of students start being disruptive a the same time because they were feeding off of each other. When one would start, others would follow or begin. You could track their time in that manner. But if multiple students are demonstrating different or dissimilar behaviors. I would ask support staff to help with the observations.

I did by having a timer on my computer set for a group of students. If a student's behavior during time owed merited extra time then I would start a new tab with a new timer for that student.
