I'm doing a no-spend year! So far, the only thing I've bought in 2019 (other than groceries and gas) is a helmet for my daughter. She's going to need new shoes soon, so I'll buy those, but that's it! Two things in 7 months isn't too bad, imo :p

I learned that I shop when I'm depressed, I spent a lot of money when I went through a phase of depression. When I figured out what was triggering me to constantly shop I slowed down on shopping and eventually got to a point where I stopped shopping constantly. Now I really think through each purchase I make.

As a present for my stepsister who just graduated, this time I decided to do it differently. She's going to study tourism. So I went to the thriftshop across the street. I bought some different items like a picture frame, teabox, and candleholder, and upcycled them with old maps I had lying around. She was stoked with everything and I felt a good about making her happy and taking the time to DIY :) I think this might become a new, sustainable habit for years to come.

I think the 30 day waiting period is really key for me. when I see new products from my favorite brands I can _feel_ it in my body. My heart will pound, and sometimes I actually salivate. It's incredible what a hold pretty things have on me! Waiting 30 days really helps me differentiate between the things I need, the things I don't need but would improve my life, and the things I want in the moment, but would regret after purchasing.

I also used to be a hyper consumer 🙈 it’s such a destructive lifestyle. I’m much happier and financially healthier now that I’m an eco minimalist. I keep a wishlist in my phone of things I’ve been holding off on buying, and those are the things I look for at the thrift store or on resale apps. Having that rule of having to find it second-hand REALLY helps me stop shopping, and makes sure the purchases I do make are eco friendly ones because I took the time to find what I wanted second-hand instead of buying new :)

Hi Shelbie! I think a lot of us get tempted by big "sales" which make us feel like this is a "too good to be true" deal, and ultimately we feel like we're saving money by spending money. I have been limiting my buying this year by asking myself.. "How often will I use this and will it bring me joy in my life?" and also.. "Would I buy it if it wasn't on sale?" These two questions have really helped me be more conservative on my buying/spending, and I hope it can help others too!

I shop way too much. I am constantly buying new items, especially high-end cosmetics....I really need to stop because I have a decent job, but I keep spending all of my money. I know that I want to be able to pay off my credit card debt, have my own place soon, have enough money saved to fix my car if it ever needs it (or buy a new one when I have to), not feel like I am living such a cluttered lifestyle, and not feel stressed over money all the time. I really need to start budgeting and creating lists & I think this video gave me a little eye-opener Thank you Shelbi!

My former co-worker a serious shopaholic, she came to the country 2 suitcase( a checked-in and carry-on) and left with 5 luggage( not small ones) and it was 6 months. She knows she is a shopaholic and even when her parents go out have to buy her a small something. I started to over shop too the over the past 2-3 years so now I started to talk myself out and being more careful and start to not shop. It's really hard, but I can do!

I'm really image driven and I found that by getting rid of my pinterest board of things I wanted to buy and instead using a written list I have bought far fewer things because I can't see the item and think about how pretty it is and envision it in my home or life. It makes it a much more practical decision about whether it has utility to me or not. It may be helpful for other people too!

Similar to you, what has helped me stop shopping the most is really becoming aware and conscious of what my personal values are. So when I was protesting the pipeline expansion in AB/BC , Canada, someone online said you protest yet drive your, cars heat your home. Technically it was a mute point to this particular pipeline expansion because it's actually for foreign markets but I agreed in principle. I can't afford to buy an electric car and I rent so no say in how my home is heated but I can stop buying plastic toothbrushes etc. So this began my less waste/low plastic living and then I watched "THE TRUE COST". I had already begun to notice how so few clothing items in stores were appealing to me because of how poor the quality had become but after watching the documentary and it 'explained' why the items were so cheap and the environmental impact and mostly the impact on other humans...that was it, I was done! I'm not going to be supporting child slavery. So now my ethics/standards are... no plastic (including synthetic materials, I would buy recycled plastic clothes if no other possible option), fair trade, ethically sourced and made, environmentally consciously sourced and made. Natural and recyclable or biodegradable materials only. And ONLY ORGANIC COTTON (if new). It has been 8 months since implementing shopping by my values and I have not purchased a single new item made with conventional cotton and I have purchased many items that would normally be...such as a shower curtain (hemp instead), dish clothes (hemp), socks, underwear, bras, t -shirt. I have purchased many household items such as dish brushes, spatula, coffee press and most items have no plastic and a few items I could not find any product with absolutely no plastic so I bought one with the very least plastic tiny parts I could find. My VALUES are what has made stopping shopping much easier...when I go to the mall or a decor store and see clothes and items...all I see is cheap, 'disposable', toxic, polluting, plastic, items made by 'slaves' . I think of the big, greedy, unethical and immoral 'brands' that are trying to 'get me' to buy their items and I think "I'm not going to be their sucker" I'm smarter than that. I am not really tempted much at all anymore. This has also led me to a more minimalist mindset 'less but better' and I see how little I need and how it is such a 'lie' that the 'stuff' will make us happy. I am learning to value myself and my relationships and experiences more that how much or what 'stuff' I own doesn't define who I am. It is so freeing and it has really helped 'get rid of' my scarcity mindset. I think I need some 'reading' /magnifying glasses soon (getting to that age)...any ethical brands for 'reading glasses'? I need the lowest magnification..1+.
@rheamorales1329
@rheamorales1329 5 лет назад
Sarah, what an amazing list of your accomplishments! Are there any resale/thrift stores with gently used reading glasses? I have a tiny second hand magnifying glass in my wallet. Reading glasses will often give me a headache if I have to use them more than a few seconds.

I "shop" family and friends' garages, closets, junk drawers and cabinets. I've gotten furniture, electronics, kitchen and yard equipment, clothes, office and art supplies. I get free stuff I put to good use, and they get more space and stuff they no longer wanted taken off their hands. It also scratches that itch I have to browse (and over-spend) in stores. I also have a "shop my closet" Pinterest board where I pin outfit ideas that include items similar to ones I already own. By getting excited to wear what I already have, I am less tempted to buy new things. And sometimes when I'm tempted to clothes shop, I recognize that what I actually want is to change up my look because I'm bored. So I cut my own hair (have done it for years) to fill that "need," and it works.

@theshivelys

So for the whole budgeting thing what I personally had to do was keep a planner with me that I used for everything. The one I use is from ashleyshelly.com. I use it to plan out my days, do my budgeting, grocery lists and self care routines. It has a little pouch inside that I keep every single receipt for what I am spending inside of. Granted I realize printed receipts or printed planners are not “eco-friendly” BUT.. I tried the whole tracking electronically thing and honestly it just never worked for me personally. Visually seeing a stack of receipts was way more eye opening especially when I realized that 2/3rds of the stack was food receipts for restaurants! The planner itself has helped keep me accountable in all aspects of my life and honestly if its the one thing thats not eco-friendly per say, will sacrifice it because its made it possible for me to lead a way more sustainable lifestyle. Its one planner I use for 12 months and its at least made of recyclable material. I am eco conscious in every other aspect of my life anyways so this one thing is not going to be the end all you know. Anyways thats what I do to be more mindful and purposeful about my spending, and I have so far been able to pay all my credit card debt and my car off. Now we are working on saving for a home and then the next goal is to pay my hubbys car off and then work on my student loans. Small successes are definitely worth celebrating.

Your channel inspired me last year to challenge myself to not buy any new clothes for a year! I started in october 18, and so far i have only bought second hand clothes either online or "op shopping" as we call it, or worn clothes in my wardrobe. Last week i brought i brand new white tshirt - as i had been looking for 1 2nd hand for months ~i guess they just dont last being white (also underwear i have allowed my self to buy new) . But i have saved so much money, discovered my style and what i actually wear. Its also been a fun journey! love your videos and you message. You have given me tons of food for thought and inspiration. This video really struck home with me. I have ADHD which means I lack dopamine which leads me to impulse buy and have a hard time not having some time of "reward". I used to dream shop where I would spend hours filling my cart on websites of all the stuff I wanted. I thought that by doing this I would get it out of my system like I was buying it without buying it. However, It made me want more and because I couldnt buy it made me more depressed and likely to say screw it I am getting it. Now I have deleted most apps for stores i like so I dont just mindlessly scroll and then want. I dont go to stores unless I have too. If i find something I want I try to find an something similar I already own or make(sewing machine is the best investment ever) or I search FB or thrift stores/consignment shops.

I am also a shopaholic. I have been using poshmark for around a year for the majority of my clothing/shoe purchases. Not buying at all would be best, but buying second hand I figure is the lesser of two evils. Plus, I keep my clothes for a long time and I never throw it away. I either sell it on poshmark or take it to a consignment shop. It has really helped that I have unsubscribed from store ig accounts and fb pages. Unfortunately fb still gives me many targeted ads for super cute clothes.

Totally agree with the idea of having a goal that you are saving or working toward. I like to write my goal on a small bit of paper and stick it in the “window” section of my wallet. Or folded around my debit card or in where I keep the cash. That way when I get my wallet out to pay for something have a visual reminder of what the goal is and I can re-assess if I really need the item(s) I’m purchasing. Then again, sometimes you actually need to buy things. My general rule is to look around and see if I can repurpose something I already have, if I can’t, then I try and buy second hand first, before I buy new (with the exception of socks, underwear and bed pillows (because, yuck)

@chickadeefoot
@chickadeefoot 5 лет назад
Hey Shelby, maybe you can help me out. I have been doing minimalism/low to no shopping for years. For the past couple of years, I have been able to only buy the essentials. But now I find I have gone too far in the other direction. I spent hours researching condoms the other day because the only fair trade brands had ingredients that were bad for my eczema, but the only ones with good ingredients were not fair trade. I literally had to call a friend to ask for advice. I have literally forgotten how to shop without being so overwhelmed by not "needing" it or it not being ethical. All of my socks and underwear are stretched out with holes, it took me two months last year to buy... Deodorant! I was literally just washing up in the morning every morning. So I didn't have to buy one. I hated it. All of this to say, at the beginning of next month, can you do a video on how to START shopping again? Because those 30 day wait lists are becoming 3 year waitlists and I really need advice from someone who understands why I even got here to begin with. I hope I'm not the only one in this situation???
@ozi9888
@ozi9888 5 лет назад
Hello. Please do not take it badly but your situation seems a bit extreme. I always avoid being extreme. Not being a shopaholic is good but at some point we continiously need somethings. So you can shop like maybe once in a month & buy things you need. Also I like self-care products. I feel happy when I apply skincare. Not too much product but some such as face serum. Maybe it is not ecological but I like them. I also dye my hair and loving the color 😍 So, my advice for you is to be minimalist but not extreme-minimalist 😊

I think you tend to be over-controlling. Did you have such experience about diets, studying? You may need some psychological coaching. When I was broke, I really learnt to spend NOTHING. For 5-6 years. I refused to buy 50cts coffee at the Uni, I had my lunch on me, I calculated the amount of rice and pasta I was eating. After a while, I got a bit more money but I just couldn't treat myself anymore. I was able to buy expensive gifts for friend, but an expensive fruit for me? No way. It took me around 2 years to "relax" and accept to spend money again, on unnecessary thing like strawberry instead of apples, like orange juice, like cheese.... And I could to this with the support of loving people around me.
@rsdxxxx
@rsdxxxx 5 лет назад
I agree to an extent. I tend to only spend more on food or cooking utensils/bakeware because it's something I enjoy, and i feel justified because they will be eaten/ used often. On the other hand, it took me 3 months to decide to buy a stainless steel razor and tell myself it was worth the change...

You posted this a while ago, so I hope you found some advice, but I like to think of necessary trash vs unnecessary waste. For example in my life - I gave birth to a child which causes a lot of trash. There’s really no way around it due to the medical supplies they use post partum. That’s not waste. I needed to use those things in order to give birth in a sanitary way. Unnecessary waste is 5 mascaras in plastic packaging that expire before I use half the tube. Condoms aren’t waste. They create trash but you need to create that trash to protect yourself from pregnancy and STDs. If everyone only created necessary trash and not unnecessary waste our planet would be much better off

I then research each item. If I lose interest during the research phase then it's not worth buying. I research price, company, sustainability, and read customer reviews. Nothing is purchased same day. I always give it until next paycheck to think about.

i learned this tip online and i thought it tied perfect and should even be apart of your list, for all these things that we talk ourselves out of buying something NEW of, you can "pay" yourself. Thinking of buying that new bag? Put the money that would have been spent on that new item in your savings, and go get the bag you already own. Its a way of gaining more appreciation for what youve had, aswell as putting that money towards a better use. Feels just like buying something new, and getting payed.

This is such a great video on the topic! I was definitely suffering from the "scarcity mentality" when I was still indulging in my shopping addiction. You explained it so well! And now that I know what it is, I think it's going to be even easier to control my addiction. (Which unfortunately will never entirely go away.)

Great video! I just found your channel and I subscribed. I haven’t shopped at a mall in 15 years! And last year I stopped shopping at Tjmaxx and Marshalls except for undergarments. But I am still thrift/ebay/Poshmark shopping too much. I am definitely going to make the lists you suggested.

This is obviously about not shopping, but some people definitely see shopping as a therapy. For me personally if I feel the itch to shop, I got thrift store shopping. Honestly I get more of a thrill from that then "regular" shopping. It's always super exciting when you find great finds at a thrift store and it also helps to support local shops (like consignment shops). These are things that have also already been produced, so buy second hand you're giving something another chance instead of just being thrown away. This year I decided I wanted to get into canning and have collected a ton of mason jars from thrifts stores instead of buying new ones which are wrapped in tons of plastic. Every little bit counts. And it's always a huge rush when I can find jars for super cheap. :)

I think it also depends on the person, I go to the mall but I don't buy anything, it's just the closest place near me that is air conditioned and in the Texas heat I'm sure as hell not going to be outside considering the closest water park is $35 for 1 day ticket.

Molly Darby, every decent store I used to shop in at the mall when I was younger have all closed, so now my local mall is used for people to walk. I alway thought it was a great idea and you can get exercise in every kind of weather!

Thanks for the excellent video! I email or text items to family for my wishlist as I'm not much into social media. I've unsubscribed from even an organic free trade clothing manufacturer's emails because daily ads were just too much. My thrift store splurges are typically under $25 a month and consist of quality clothing separates, kitchen items, wicker baskets and ceramic pots for plants. My plants are cuttings or babies from successful houseplants I already own. I love decorating with plants and enjoyed seeing so many in the video.

I keep a running list of what I need and or want, such as very specific clothing items, and a few home items, on top of our plant list. That way if we're out and I have it in the budget, if we find/see what's on the list I'll make a decision if we'll get it or not. At this point almost everything we have is second-hand or has been passed down to us, or I found for free, which is always awesome. After working in the mall for so many years, I tend to stay away from it, personally I don't understand why people love black Friday, it is a scary fucking day and dangerous for most employees! But for me being on the other side of it, I know of the "darker side" and honestly don't feel right contributing to it. Another great video, I hope this ripple in the pond helps inspire others to take a good hard look into things!

I needed this. I'm planning out some No Spend Rules for next month and trying to follow those rules now. I try to buy things in bulk if I am going to buy anything new or buy something online. That way I can save up money to buy the things that I want/need and think about it. Normally when I have saved enough money, I don't want several things or didn't really need it and I just put that extra money in my savings.

Honestly I held off on watching this for a bit but it's so helpful because I realise now that I'm in this mindset where I feel like I've been depriving myself of things and I try to justify it because it's sustainably made or second hand when I really don't need it at the moment and should be saving

what made me think about all of this first was when i read that simple quote: "we trade our time for things" time is so much more worth than all the stuff we collect.. . i'm working on it. and definitely trying to save up money now, i understand what you mean by feeling different not knowing your bank account is bland (at least at the end of the month.)

Use your houseplants as your background, all those healthy green plants looked wonderful on my television screen-LOL. I have a question, now that you have a house with a yard and you don't rent, are you going to consider planting vegetables and beneficial flowers outside? You talked about buying a two story house as an environmental and monetary savings but I'm not so sure. I have lived in a less than 1,000 square foot house that is a single story ranch for 25 years. Living alone this is enough space for me and still enough when I have company. Where I live in the midwest we get hot, muggy summer weather and when it came time to put a new roof on the house I asked for the lightest grey roofing shingles they had and the first year my friends noticed when they came over how cool my house was on a hot day with no air conditioner on. I have tree cover from two large trees but the lighter shingles and the living space on one story keep it comfortable in hot weather. You will find your upstairs will get hot even with air conditioning in very hot weather, cause hot air raises. For winter I replaced almost all of my windows with triple panes ( something I have budgeted for almost 4 years replacing two windows at a time per year LOL. In this fifth year, I have two windows left-Yay) I have had the house sided with extra insulation and the bedroom floors are bamboo flooring with recycled blue jean floor insulation ( which was fairly cheap when they first introduced it because folks didn't want grass and stinky unwashed blue jeans on the floor- which they weren't, it was washed denim fibers) and I have area rugs I put down in the winter. My wish list ( everyone has one you know) are solar panels to light my shed, green house off the garage and the garage itself since these have flat or low angled slant roofs and face southwest. Continued good luck with your show I think you do a great job and it has grown in positive ways from the early dumpster dive shows-LOL not my favorites.

Frances Cox I‘m always so surprised about the AC issue. In Germany no one has AC because our houses are built differently (stone and very good insulated). Some older houses get warm or hot in the summer but we just live with it and try to update the house so it does stay cooler. I also was wondering about Shelby‘s garden and hope that she will respond! My garden is very small but I have lots of wildflowers and beefriendly plants and I grow some berries and veg. It‘s fun and my garden is full of bees 💙

Hahaha. I was looking for advice on how to stop having a running wishlist. I want to get away from the mentality of thinking about what I want to buy next. I already don't shop in stores very much. I totally get what you're saying about how scarcity can lead to overspending later. I've fallen into that trap a couple times.
