How to stop smoothly on a motorcycle: braking & stopping [from any speed]

A guide to achieving consistently smooth and controlled stops from any speed, whether on a 125cc or a large motorcycle, these skills can transform your stopping technique. Eliminate pillion head butts as your braking is smoother and gentler. Using this technique you are less likely to drop your motorbike through loss of control & balance under heavy braking.
Many people over use the front brake at slow speeds on a motorcycle. Using the rear brake at lower speeds on a motorbike will give you more control and enable a smoother stop. Learn how to feather off the stop so the end of the stop is smooth and controlled.
Towards the end of the video are a few examples from lessons with students where combined forward planning and good use of the controls is the goal.

Thanks, it's one of the things I work our students quite rigorously on to bring them on from the front brakey boingy stoppers 😉 Taking a little bit of pride in how we stop 😊👌

Slow speed braking is key to slow speed control using rear brake, especially when you’ve got a bit of lean angle on.

Leanna, such an amazing instructor, great video, I think your voice is so soothing, and easy to listen to. Than you . I needed this, I just bought my 2nd bike went from a 500cc bike (450 lb) to a 19cc (700lb) and I'm so nervous during each stop, This is definitely helping.

Hi 👋 greetings from Ireland . Finally someone explained sooo clearly 👏 i do all mistakes that you said we need to avoid. Thank you so much was very helpful specially about front break! I have sports bike i know not the best bike to learn. But again basics and techniques are same. So i will be practicing tomorrow those tips.

In the case of circumstances where forward planning cant be done, due to some extreme event, like a car spinning out of control (Like in one of your videos) what is the best course of action ? If you do lock up (For those without ABS) what do you do ?

The best course of action is to keep your distance before anything does happen, so that you have time to avoid it. Also being well aware of what is going on around you so you know whether or not there is traffic in any lanes beside you or close behind you, which will inform your choice of action should you need to brake harshly or change lanes suddenly. If you don't have ABS and you lock your wheel(s) up through grabbing the front or stamping on the rear brake, release both brakes and gently reapply them progressively instead of suddenly. Great video as usual👍🏻 how much travel does the rear brake have? Mines travels about 7 cm but the brake only activates after 5 cm. Is this normal?

Some travel more than others but the lever is adjustable as to where the brake starts to "bite" so to speak.

I ride an AJS Cadwell (tiny little thing) and it has a prominent pedal. Not that familiar with larger bikes, I am afraid! Only just started riding!

Another great video…I love the way you tell your pupils off…it’s so funny. Incidentally when you describe braking in an emergency, there’s a lot to remember, but believe or not on my CBT I did my emergency stop perfectly as a result of riding a bike 40 years prior…it’s all still in there as a natural process without even thinking…so when you explain it and break it down into what the correct process is, it amazes me that I do all that instinctively….so once learnt, never forgotten 😊

On your mod 2 can you put your right foot down whilst stopping or is that a fail?

You can choose which foot to put down. We train this method to get students onto good habits for braking smoothly and preventing them from grabbing the front brake at the last minute at a junction, however we also give them the option to choose whether to use the front brake, but to be super smooth and gentle with it. Is being a bit snappy with the throttle, instead of rolling on and off, a trait found in transitioning from 125’s to 400-650cc machines due to 125 riders being used to quicker gear changes being required due to running out of power more quickly, and not being used to the reserve of power the bigger machines have? I’ve noticed engine braking is more significant on a 650 compared to a 125.

Thankyou for all your Mod 2 videos, I'm not a road user so they were incredibly valuable for me in getting some exposure to situations i hadn't encountered much even on my lessons resulting in a first time Mod 2 pass! I even nudged my instructor to look at them (and Russ'), because they're the best videos i found on RU-vid in terms of video/audio quality and the level of knowledge being shared and more videos like this from schools across the country i think would benefit everyone as something to watch ontop of lessons.

In a downhill I have dropped my bike as I’m petrified of front brake and worried with having to stop in first gear 🙈 What should I do in that downhill situation, please?

Try very very gently using the front brake with your feet down. Don't be afraid of it, so long as you are super gentle with it nothing bad will happen. If you are sharp with it, or if you are both sharp and have the handlebars turned then you are more likely to drop it. Go to a car park and practise having both your feet down and gently gently using the front brake to stop the bike at slow speeds. I'll try to get an upload filmed on this for you soon 😊👍

thanks and great video as usual, can I ask if you are easing fully off then your brake light is no longer showing to following vehicles ? or once stopped fully and bike settled go back on brake.?

Hi thanks for the question. It a very slight ease off when almost stationary. Once stopped I reapply if I want the brake light on, or sometimes I'll pop the front brake on when stationary, depends on the situation. Sometimes I'll have no brake light until I can see where's vehicles approaching from behind when a couple of flashes, followed by a constant brake light can be considered more effective in getting the attention of following vehicles as they may mistake a constant brake light for the rear light.
