"A big no-no"-perfect encapsulation of what is wrong with focusing on "staying down" in the through swing. This video zeroes in on a major problem I have every round from time to time; one which leads often to big numbers on a hole(s). Your comment on the right hip getting in the way by moving closer to the ball turned on the light bulb for me. Out to the garage now to see if I can get that right hip in its proper place.
im so glad i found your channel russell. ive seen more golf instruction videos than id like to admit but your videos are the only ones that make sense to me and have helped me tremendously. i can not believe you dont have more subscribers.
Excellent video ! Again . You seem to be the only instructor (that I’ve seen) who understands the diifferent doubts and questions that arise when trying to work through a swingchange. 58 yrs old , playing since early 70’s , trying to get rid of my old school gliding hip swing 😅
This really interesting. I'm sure I am spinning my hips to get rotation and the right hip is coming forward and at impact my pelvis has lifted. Need to try this drill tomorrow.
The transition is the key. I know what we must do. Another thing is that we do!. Lateral movement (instead of rotation) also kill my swing. Thanks Russell
What is new to me and not expressly stated but otherwise revealed in this excellent video is the truism that one can not retract the lead shoulder back and around post impact unless your hips have already rotated in advance of the upper body rotating down and around over the lead leg. That is the message for me.
Hi Russ I have a very similar problem and I can swing my hip and trail shoulder but always worried about hip spinning. I think your example using the two alignment rods is brilliant and looking forward to practicing tomorrow. Thanks again for a great explanation.
The second fault you mentioned is the one I think affects most of us hackers , not clearing enough space for the arms to come through because of the right hip spinning forward . Is it a feeling of keeping the righ hip where it is and push the left hip backwards?
I guess the feel will be really different depending where you are at the top of your backswing. I’ll create a video this week on this area if it helps. Strangely most people I work with are surprised by how much they can move to the lead side in transition so your probably correct about the common spinning issue. I’ll share my experiences this week 👍👍👍
This is my issue I get stuck I know what to do but I don’t do it on the course I’m fine on takeaway then I just can’t seem to make it feel natural my timing gets all out of whack
Good idea. I have had this feeling of needing to stay on the back foot a little longer in the forward swing, but this is more helpful. I suffer from a lot of thin shots, and looking forward to trying this. thank you.
Good stuff Russell, another penny dropped for me. Is it a good thought to try and move shoulders back at transition? No matter what I try, my upper body and arms come rushing down and forces me to extend early.
Wow, I can actually feel the space to move and stay down for the first time EVER!!!!! Keeping the right hip back is the key, and was definitely NOT doing that! Thank you!! 🙏
Well done explanation. But, try putting right “cheek” on the wall in your home and rotate the other one, and let me know how that feels on your back and sacrum. Your body works hard to protect against that torque, as well as just get the club back tot he ball you are staring at, using arms and hands and shoulders instead. Conclusion: golf swing is almost impossible for the average person who hasn’t been playing since the age of 5. Maddening game for us neophytes (I’ve been struggling for 35 adult years,a new am otherwise a highly accomplished athlete in multiple sports). Good luck!
Since I've been doing the standing up and throwing the right hip at the ball for so long, your exercise is going to feel like my hips (both sides) are moving away from the ball even though it's just the left hip.
And BTW, I did something like this year's ago with my sand wedge and I was amazed how much easier and better I was hitting it. I only abandoned it because I thought I was doing the golf swing the 'wrong way'. Little did I know...
I will never have a proper hip movement through the ball. I have been chasing this ghost off and on all season, and there's been nothing good of it. If my right hip doesn't move through early it stalls out and I stand up. I am now of the opinion that people simply are and aren't built to have a proper move through the ball.
All these fixes, but has an amateur hacker ever fixed it? The closest I've seen on youtube for before/after was on Dan whittakers channel Great videos to demonstrate and Russel explains it the best out of any channel I've seen. But I've not read any forum post or video on youtube showing these fixes massively changing early extension
Michael Sparks, it is possible, but you need to work on it. Slow it down a bit at the start of the transition and build speed then in the downswing. Ive been working on this one change now for about 5 weeks and its showing results. You wont suddenly become a brilliant player, but it will improve your swing, and consistency.
You should also check out Milo Lines , Golfletics. He really focuses on the squatting portion of the downswing which is an athletic, natural feeling motion vs a more forced and rigid feel. Try it.... stand over a ball, take your backswing and stop at the top. Then (without moving your arms down) simply do a half squat. Repeat. It will illicit a good sense of using the ground but also with keeping the hips back during the downswing. You need to find a swing that feels most athletic to you, applying the fundamentals correctly.
its not that "I didn't finish that swing ", its I could't finish that swing because I stood up and blocked my ability to rotate through. Russell rules!
I have a trick that can get you into these positions automatically during the downswing. If you place the ball forward in your stance and then pretend like it's further back in your stance you can get the feeling of CATCHING the ball "on the way up". I really had this feeling down last year and was hitting absolute darts from 180 to 190 on long par 4s. Even had a hole in one and went from a 12 to 5.6 handicap in three months with this swing thought
I gotta tell you that you gave me an awesome revolutionary swing thought with this idea. Totally different than what you would think when you hear turn your hips. It's so easy to beat that old butt on the wall drill. This thought shows you how to turn your hips on the angle of your swing. Most people turn their hips as if they were standing straight up. Right hip back and don't move it back towards the ball. Simple but genius.
My golf coach from high school used to stay on me about this many years ago. I’m starting back playing recently a little more and I still tend to stand during the swing. It’s hard to stop once I start.
A recent subscriber to your channel. This is the best description of the right hip movement I have ever heard or seen. My shopping list now includes 2 alignment sticks. Great videos.
Totally agree of this importance. It also can be used in conjunction with a properly timed pause at the top where the club continues back slightly as you get the hips into the downswing position. This also helps with torquing everything up for power. Thanks
You made understanding this video impossible. All I wanted to hear was stay down like at address and rotate thru impact, with a visual of the difference when we don't. You just said a whole lot of nothing.
Thanks for your videos, been watching them and trying to replicate the movements hitting balls in my garage, the belt buckle down seems to be helping with EE but it’s causing me to pull draw every shot and OTT, if you can direct me to a link or a comment that would be great, the right elbow drill and me don’t get along to shallow , thanks
Very helpful lesson. A related question is how to keep the head from backing up as you come down. I can keep my hips in the box pretty well now, but can’t stop the head from pulling back and the inevitable flip.
4.03 “the left side comes back” that’s it and a good way to understand as opposed to rotate. In transition move the left hip back. Has the same effect but far easier to understand I would suggest. Great video👍🏌️♂️
I feel like the demonstration of the alignment sticks was most helpful. I find most swing videos to leave me wanting because they involve way too much thought. Your simply demonstrate the key points without the deluge of thoughts, so thanks for that. Anyways, your demonstration had me going back to look at my swing videos (I've taken hundreds). In each of them, the same problem shows up. My right foot is planted like a rock nearly right up to impact. All of the rotation up to that point seems fine, but the extension I think is because my right knee is resisting the proper motion so my brain compensates by extending the body at impact to conserve energy through release. The compensation works, but at a cost of ball striking consistency and thus confidence (which makes everything even worse). I hit plenty of great looking shots. Just not in any predictable order. LOL So yeah, thanks for the demonstration. Can't wait to see if I can correct it in the coming weeks (starting tomorrow).
Just watched another video on standing up from another source (provided upon request) that indicated to stop standing up not only do you need hip rotation in early part of downswing but also right side crunch in the downswing that has the beneficial effect of extending the left side enabling left shoulder retraction post impact. Idea is to have the sense of rotating the right side of the rib cage down into and toward the inside of the lead foot in the downswing at impact. This will definitely stop the standing up and keep a constant spine angle from address through impact. Hope this helps. It is more than just rotating hips in early part of downswing but also performing a right side crunch to avoid standing up.
I record myself at the driving range and rewatch it in slow motion. I could clearly see that I was lifting up a good three inches. I’ll watch this video again at the range tomorrow to help improve my swing. Thank you for the video. You’re helping a lot of people, myself included.
I am having a really really weird issue, my lack of rotation is coming in the second half of the downswing! I get my hands back down to my hips okay, and that is when I start to stand up and quit rotating. Any drills to reinforce not doing this?
I would be willing to bet you get the weight on the balls of your feet. Stand on your toes and see if you can rotate your hips. You can't so when you get on the balls of your feet you will stop rotating it and come out of the shot . Weak fade or slice is usually the result. From the top have your first thought being to get on the outside of your left foot. Michael Breed had a video showing Sam Sneed throwing his left knee out and of course that left hip follows.
