Are you currently taking thyroid medication? Have you ever wondered about trying to get off of your thyroid medication? You were probably told that you have to take it for the rest of your life, right?
What if I told you that that may not be the case? Well, it's true. There are a lot of thyroid patients who are taking prescription thyroid medications who ultimately want to stop taking them if at all possible. And it turns out that there may be a path for certain people.
But please read this disclaimer before you attempt it:
Do NOT attempt to get off of your thyroid medication without physician supervision. There are some conditions which make getting off of thyroid medication impossible. These conditions include complete removal of the thyroid gland, complete destruction of the thyroid gland from radioactive iodine, and complete destruction of the thyroid gland from end-stage Hashimoto's thyroiditis. If you have any of these conditions then you MUST take thyroid medication forever.
But what about other thyroid patients? There may be a way for you to potentially get off of your thyroid medication or potentially lower the dose that you are taking.
Getting off of thyroid medication involves treating the root cause of your thyroid condition and fixing that problem. If you can do this then you may be able to lower your dose.
Watch this video for more information on how to do exactly that.

I have recently found out that I don't do well on synthetic thyroid meds. I was getting either times of extreme fatigue or was getting extremely wound up and filled with anxiety. My sleep was virtually non-existent. I felt terrible on them; I feel terrible off of them. I do better when on natural dessicated thyroid but "they" have removed it from the market so it is not available anymore. Having an understanding of what is truly going on in our medical system is imperative to having the motivation to get off of these meds. I know that "they" are funneling all thyroid patients that were taking NDTs to having only synthetic available. They can control the people better if they are all taking one or two of the only available thyroid meds. My concern is that what are they going to start doing to the synthetics? If people think that these medications are going to be kept as pure and honest medications, that is a person in denial. Who knows what they will put into these medications! The companies making Rx's have no concern for a person's well-being except for getting all of their money.

Yes you are right, synthetic medicines comes with lots of side effects which makes us not even feel like we are humans. and also it is on purpose that people depend on the government and the doctors target to give people life time medication. We need to protect our farmers, we can get rid of any diseases from the food itself.

I would caution people who want to reduce the amount of thyroid medication they are on- or want to omit it entirely. You should always be sure to consult your Dr.- don't play with increasing or reducing your thyroid med without talking to your Dr. You could be doing harm, rather than improving your health and well-being. I had the opposite problem. I felt like I needed a higher dose of synthroid because I was still tired and had many of the low thyroid symptoms that did not go away. In fact, felt some were increasing, especially fatigue. My dr. kept telling me that I was getting the right dosage. He did no additional tests for thyroid function, nor tests for any other health issues. Then, a series of things happened: - I changed drs and got one who, I felt, was really listening to me. - I was under more and more stress, and working a lot of hours. I knew stress was not good for me, but wasn't sure if that was a factor. - I got diagnosed with a major health issue - one that produced similar symptoms as low thyroid. It turned out that I did need an increase in my thyroid medication- BUT, I had more than one additional health issue, which complicated matters. Bottom line, you have to keep talking to your dr. If you feel that dr isn't responding to your problems and finding solutions, change drs. I suspect that there are lots of patients like me who have more than one health issue. So finding the correct dosage of thyroid meds can be complicated. That's why I advise not to adjust your medication on your own without a drs consult.

I’ve been on thyroid medication for 40 years. I’ve yet to find a doctor who is willing to reduce meds without a fight. I doubt very many docs would be willing to supervise a weaning off process. Not many of them understand the thyroid beyond the TSH test.

That is because Doctors went to school to study books written by the farma industry and were taught only how to prescribe medication to keep you sick so you will continue to buy medications (making farma more money). They are not interested (or know how) in finding the root or cause of your physical issues nor curing any disease (bad business for farma)

I am so happy to beat my hypothyroidism with Dr iyaremoses on RU-vid channel herbs medication...
@Jesus_Saves_Its_A_Free_Gift
I agree. My family physician told me that I would die if I come off Synthroid. He said it's dangerous for my heart. I am going to try coming off Synthroid slowly. I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism in 2002. I still have my thyroid. I've been doing healthy keto and intermittent fasting and prolonged fasting since early 2019. How and what we eat makes a huge difference as well on top of taking the right supplements. I did this once and felt great and lost weight but then I started feeling worse. I believe I did it too quickly. I had NO symptoms when I was diagnosed in 2002 with hypothyroidism. I wish I would've known then what I know now!

Thank you, Dr. Childs, for all of your important insight. I am 63yo F, started Keto and IF and lost 40lbs. I finally stopped my cycle at 60, and I retired at 62. Your videos gave me the direction to lower my 90mg daily Armour. You teach that all of these lifestyle changes are hormone, especially Estrogen related, so I felt confident in reducing my Armour. Of course, my Doctor refused to consider it, so I read every pubmed article related to hypothyroidism and watched all of your videos. I supported my thyroid during this time with 2 brazil nuts daily (Selenium), Roasted seaweed, Spirulina, Zinc, Garlic and Black Seed Oil. I added Am/Pm Indian yoga throat massages with Walnut oil. I drank Indian Coriander Tea every Am. I also took a Thyroid Support capsule, and Ashwagandha. I was very slow in weaning myself, paying attention to my symptoms that got me on Thyroid: I would wake up with totally numb hands. I had clumps of hair falling out. I could not get to sleep because my bones were so cold, even with the heater on, blackets, and wearing sweatpants and sweatshirt.And I was so, so tired, and depressed. So, I reduced very, very slowly. In the past, my symptoms would return and I had to rush to start taking Thyroid again for relief. So, here I am, 18 months later, still watching your videos and learning from you ,BUT now I am almost off of Armour (only 15mg). I hope to have my own Thyroid working in top order by the end of the year, when I will start to slowly, slowly, remove the supplements that I am taking. For interested viewers, do your own research and pay attention to your body, symptoms, and requirements. I feel super now and have many other positive benefits: better sleep, energy, keeping the 40lbs off, better wound healing etc. And, Hah! I don't have to visit the Doctor anymore because I am off all meds. Good luck to all my Thyroid gang!

@tahoe twilight I was told also as a female with hypothyroidism not to go on keto diet because it puts to much stress on the thyroid gland. I wish I could get of Synthroid but I can’t because I feel worse. But thanks again I feel bad when I take it too. Tremors, heart palpitations and nausea
@wanda18221

@@sparkledonut4860 I am having very good success reducing my Armour thyroid by eating a plant based diet. I am seeing tremendous improvement in just 6 weeks. I’ve eliminated gluten, eggs, all oils, dairy, I eat meat only 3 times per week. I get my oil from nuts and seeds. I supplement with B 12. For the first time I can ever remember my body temperature has raised from 97.7 to 98.4. I am shocked! My allergies have also cleared up. My Doctor initially told me to reduce meds twice per week but I am now skipping 3 times and feel great. I take 125 MG and have been on meds for 14 years. For the first time I am hopeful I can get off totally. I eat Brazil nuts and walnuts for selenium and pumpkin seeds for zinc. I don’t take iodine, there is controversy about iodine. I make coriander tea and use black cumin. Check out Dr Joel Fuhrman’s nutritarian diet. Plus, I’ve lost 5 pounds since reducing my meds! Incredible

My GP has got me into "chasing the TSH level". I tried what you suggested, but just a once-off reduction from 75 micrograms to 50, for 3 months. I felt no difference physically, but my TSH went up from 1.71 to 3.93. My free T4 and T3 levels also slightly lower, but in the 50% range. I reluctantly went back onto 75micrograms, for the moment. I will wait for my annual blood works in March 2023 and take it from there.

Thanks for this guidance! While I was getting bad thyroid treatment, I gained hundreds of pounds and have been terrified of reducing my meds even though I know having lost the weight I may need less medication. I cut about 30% of my NDT very slowly earlier this year with no effects so far. This encourages me to keep going!

I have been weaning my NDT by 25% weekly and so far on 25% of original dose and haven’t had significant side effects except some recognized agitation. I am committed to giving this a 6 month trial unless something significant should arise but so far I’m satisfied. My doctor is aware of my taper and unfortunately he originally recommended I stop taking my replacement cold turkey and see what happens. I am a pharmacist and immediately knew this was incorrect and potentially dangerous advice. I would caution any patient whose doctor says they can stop thyroid medication cold turkey to talk to their pharmacist first.

I don't think it's working. Going to ask his doctor if he can be seemed off of it. He's always tired and cold, don't think that stuff is working, prefer natural cures instead of pharmaceutical drugs. My mother had her thyroid removed and was never given Levothyroxin, she gained very much weight which hastened her passing. Doctors should know what the hell they are doing. I was put on levothyroxine bc I was on Seroquel, and that med wrecked my thyroid after about 2 months of being on it. I've been off Seroquel for four years now, and I'm still on the levothyroxine. I noticed my hair is dry ,I've went from 160 lbs at 5'4 to 117 lbs. My legs are also very dry. I'm convinced I don't need levothyroxine anymore. My primary Dr. Doesn't want to take me off of it bc he says my TH8# is good. Ive also been having heart palpitations, so I decided to go down to 38 mg of the levothyroxine. I was doing that for about a week,and I did notice less hair breakage, no palps, and less dry skin. Problem is, I felt terrible. Maybe I'll just go down to 45 mg, and just do - 5 mg every two weeks. I can't stand taking meds when it's not an absolute necessity, and many doctors I have dealt with want to write scripts smh.

Thank you so much for this video, I am glad I found you. There is no doctor to help us getting off the medication. Now instead of Thyroxine for about 4 years I am taking compounded medicine, 30mg SR caps with vitamin C filler. I used to take 60mg but like you I thought that was too much so did cut it down to half. Now I would like to know can I go lower than this or because it is compounded is not possible? Would you help please.
@drwestinchilds
@drwestinchilds 2 года назад
The fact that it is compounded won't have any impact on whether or not you can get off of it. That has more to do with whether or not your thyroid gland is capable of producing thyroid hormone on its own.

Dr. Childs, I watched one of your videos on the difference between "normal" and "optimal" T3 and T4 levels. Very interesting. My TSH levels are high (almost 10) and my T3/T4 levels are within the lab normal limits but below the optimal range you discussed. I shared the gist of your video with my doctor and asked if I can take a low dose of levothyroxine to bump my T3/T4 levels into the optimal range. She thought this was sensible and recommended I try 25 ug/day to see what effect it has. I know you can't give medical advice here but does this approach sound reasonable?

I would like to get off of 15 mg desiccated thyroid alternating with 30 mg desiccated thyroid but I don't know the low and slow of my small doses. I believe the fillers in most synthetically formulated drugs and supplements disagree with my system.

hello Dr. Childs, thank you again for sharing your knowledge. I stopped taking Tirosint cold turkey last month, after inadvertently overdosing the month prior (mixed up the tablet colors!). I am starting to feel the slump in energy/focus, and gaining/bloating. After 5 years of treatment, I only ever lost 43 lbs within 5 months, when I added T3, but also lost half of my hair. Have since regained the weight after going off T3. Hard to lose hair as a woman, but I'm thinking the weight is a bigger risk at this point and may restart Tirosint and T3. Do you recommend this course of action, until I lose the weight, and then consider weaning off after, or should I stay the course with no thyroid meds since I am already 6 weeks off of it?

HELP i’ve started on a low-dose of NP of only 15 my TSH was. 965 and plummeted two. 31 with a permission of my Endo I cut that in half about a week ago. Period Three days ago without any new foods or new medication‘s my tongue swelled up very very scary I’ve been able to use Benadryl and prednisone to get it to come down a little but when I tried getting off the Benadryl today it flared right back up! A few people in a Facebook group when I asked said this has happened to them when they miss a dose or cut back. Is there anything I can do for this I’m really scared I did take my dose today the half dose I had started a week ago. Thank you in advance for your help and all that you do

I am a 49-year-old female who has been on and off thyroid medication since my early 20s. I now take Armour Thyroid 60 mg. I have been doing a clean keto lifestyle for the last nine months and have noticed by removing all wheat from my diet my body is able to absorb all the nutrients much more efficiently since wheat interferes with the absorption of minerals into the body. I also began taking cayenne pepper 500 mg tablet about four weeks ago. My thyroid function has went from a 3.0 to a 4.9 in a matter of three months. I attribute that to eating clean keto, removing wheat, and adding cayenne pepper! I am going to taper off of my thyroid medication thanks to your video. My doctor told me to go off of it cold turkey but I do not trust that. Thanks for the video😊

I gradually tapered off of my thyroid medication 15 mg at a time, so I went from 60to45 to 30 and so on. I have been completely off of my thyroid medication for about a month now and I feel fantastic! I take 1000 mg of cayenne pepper every morning when I eat breakfast and I have plenty of energy! I still plan on going and getting my blood work done in about two weeks just to see what the numbers are saying. When I get that bloodwork back, I will let you know what it looks like. Hope this helps someone. Happy Thanksgiving.

Hi I'm recently been diagnosed with hypothyroidism I did this test 4 months back that time tsh was 6.8 and t3 t4 were normal but when I checked couple of weeka back it was 84 whereas t3 was in normal range and t4 was slightly low. Doctor prescribed 88mcg levothyroxin I have been taking this for last 2 weeks. Is it possible for my case to slowly and eventually get off this meds. I have been taking lot of stress few months back which I feel was the reason to trigger this. I also had some swelling on thyroid gland which reduced after taking medicines for 2 weeks. I don't know if you still look at these comments since it has been a year but I need help with trying to wean off my thyroid medication. I have been on it for 15 years and really never was diagnosed with hypothyroidism. It was a Naturopath who just decided I needed Thyroid medication. It is specially made for me with T3 and T4 in an oil base. I open the capsule and squeeze one drop out of the capsule twice a day. I unfortunately and also on Hydrocortisone and HRT so my body is going through a whole lot. It has been almost four weeks since I lowered it 25% or so. And I feel like shit every day. I am in a fog, lethargic, body is weak, I want to sleep a lot and I am gaining weight like crazy. Also at night I wake up sweating I get so hot at night and then in the day I am freezing though the temperatures are not cold. So I am wondering because of the hydrocortisone is my feedback system not able to get my thyroid to function at all? I take Kelp because I am a Vegan, and I take Tyrosine 500mgs tid. I get zinc and Selenium in my multivit. Any suggestions? Also even if I don't feel any better should I lower my thyroid medication again anyway or do you not lower it until you are stable and normal again? You never address this issue. I hope you get this.

Heart palpitations by themselves are not harmful so that isn't necessarily a reason to stop using them, however, they are a more common side effect of medications that contain T3. You should talk with your doctor to see if swapping back to Armour makes more sense or adjusting your dose of cytomel.

It was extremely hard as I’m T1D for 21 yrs and have been on thyroid medication for 18 years BUT I’m now on the lowest dose there is and have to 1/3 or 1/4 it up daily because I don’t need as much medication now!🙌🏼 But at one point my TSH got up to 137 at the ER. I’ve seen 4 Drs all who couldn’t figure out why I was having so many issues with the levoxyl I’ve taken my entire life. Drs seem to think I have an allergy to tabs so they moved me from levoxyl to synthroid then to 15 mg NP thyroid and now I’m on 13mcg of Tirosint. Have you ever met someone who couldn’t tolerate the medication any longer or had hypersensitivity to it? I’ve meet with 4 drs so far who cannot figure out why I’m having so many issues to tolerate a medication they say I need in order to live. The only thing that helps take the edge off during these episodes is Benadryl. It’s not anxiety - my body just can’t tolerate it any longer.
