In this video I go over how to stop the Rails or Railing on a Classic Boston Whaler Montauk 17 restoration. The rails on some of the classic Boston Whalers were initially held together with screws. This applied to most of the Whaler lineup including the Montauk and Outrages. They eventually went to welded rails but the ones that use screws eventually start rattling.
This video covers a well published solution that is covered in both Whaler Central and continuous wave forums. Essentially, you replace the screws with stainless rivets. The forums recommend SSB6-6S KLIK-FAST RIVETS 3/16 as a solution for this, I went with similar SS rivets from a a different manufacturer and had great results.
Below are paid affiliate links to the tools and items I used in this video:

Appreciate all of your videos, I've been going through them as I work on restoring my '79 Montauk. Huge help. I used rivets on the upper T connections, but want to use the self tapping screws on the base. Do you have a source for the screws shown on the video? Thanks again!

Hey there, bought a "blem" bow rail from Speciality Marine and found out why it was cheaper: the thing is twisted and nothing lines up. Long story longer, I cut 6" off the vertical rails, and it's finally and very sturdy. But I want to replace the lame set screws with rivets, and that means drilling through stainless steel. Any guidance?

I drilled through mine and then riveted. Should be pretty easy i would think.

Thanks for the heads up on tightening up the rail T fittings. On my 17, the side rails rattle a bit - it’s the vertical rail that goes through the lower fitting. Is there an easy way to fix that ?

By the side rails, I assume you mean the ones in the back? I riveted the T's on mine, including the vertical rail. The only screws I did not replace with rivets are the oned at the bottom attaching to the base. Hope this helps!

@@ExtremeDIYGuy Yes the back side rails - from the bottom base go up 6” to the first fitting, where the vertical rail slides into and through towards the top T fitting, that’s where it rattles.

I see what your talking about. I'm really surprised the stanchions rattle. Mine are pretty tight. I would check and make sure the screws that fasten them to the side of the boat are snug. Barring that, you night want see if a piece of felt or plastic will fit in between the stanchion and the vertical rail
