Regarding the 1/3 rule, say I went away for a couple of weeks on holiday and had to tackle my lawn on return, how many days would I leave between each cut? So take off 1/3, then wait X days to then take off another 1/3, then X days take off another third etc until it is back to the right height I need it?
I bought something similar to the first one (but without the foot press) for CAD4 and pulled out 1000s of dandelions with it. Multiple wheelbarrows! Weed killer and core aeration in one!
I have a Fiskars. It's awesome. You can use the foot pedal to push it down further for tap root weeds. You can also go shallow for clumping grasses like poa. Also for driveway weeds I like to hit it with vinegar weed killer first, let it dry out for several hours, THEN torch them. They go poof then!!
What about horse tail/ mares tail weed this weed is rampant in my whole village at the moment I don’t have a fork anymore to aerate my lawn I’ve added fertiliser as I know it’s used to low nutrients and I want the grass to outcompete it. I’m cutting my grass short but there’s more horse tail than grass in my front garden. I’ve tried pulling a load of them out by hand to help my grass compete but I know the roots go down as far as 2metres and even the tiniest root will let them grow back. I don’t want to buy herbicide but I feel if I don’t it’s going to take several seasons just to get it to a manageable level
Hi Robbie. A video on how to deal with bamboo coming up through the lawn would be great. Don’t try to kill the individual growths, or remove the grass and attack under the soil.
How’s about an update on your front lawn Robbie I miss the double stripes you do it’s what got me in to your channel plus great to see ya pops back in the vids he’s class 😊
When i'm dealing with weeds in a lawn i either use an old fashioned daisy grubber or a border fork and a knife. I'm not that keen on using chemicals as i find they can be a bit hit and miss in how they work.
I renovated half my lawn as l wanted to see the difference. The new lawn grow well but now has clover growing in it, ant nests and a few weeds. The old half is as flat as a pancake and covered 98% clover. I am thinking to cut out the clover as best as possible and reseed in new lawn. In old lawn half kill it off by covering with a tarp and resending.
All the tools you used pull up half the lawn leaving open holes where weeds throve. I use a long thin knife like spade from Gardena to lift up weeds, pull them out and then step on the little hole to close it. Also you don't burn the weeds black with a burner, you just heat them up till they wilt.
No point frazzling lawns with a butane wand. I have used them on paved areas but they are pretty useless on the bigger weeds, unless you have the time to stand there waiting for the big tap root to be affected. Just scorching the leaves is a waste of time, effort and money. As for the long weed pullers, they aren't required to pull plantain. Maybe when I can no longer get up and down, I may use them again, but I swear by and always use my 'Daisy grubbers'. Plantain, dandelions, cats ears, oxalis, even daisies etc. have all gone into my bucket after being gently teased out my mine. Most of the root tips come out too especially when conditions aren't baking the ground.
Oh and l already used the flame thrower a week ago on some clover and the ants nest l am sorry ants. But l have nest all around my garden and the flying ants.
