I'm transitioning from 'regular' athletic trainers/sneakers to ones that are zero drop. I noticed a lot of stiffness in my ankles after the first few days in the transition. Using the band helps, but this roller exercise revealed a big tightened area I wasn't aware of. I also learned I need to roll off my arch when using the band because those muscles along my shins tend to take the load when I walk/run. Thanks so much!!!

Oh. My. Goodness! Im sooo happy I found this video! I’m a ballet dancer and have been struggling with a sore achilles, ankle clicking and a feeling like my ankle needs to pop but won’t for weeks on my left side. I can’t properly point my foot. I turned to TY for some possible advice and this was exactly what I needed. Just in the few minutes I tried these exercises I noticed an improvement in my mobility. There’s still some dysfunction going on but it’s better and I just need to work on it more. As a dancer it’s scary to lose function in our feet. Thank you so much for the great video and detailed advice!

OMG!!! Thank you so much for this! I’ve been dealing with the most horrible ankle clicks for a few years now. I followed your instructions but first also did an exercise to get the blood flow going in that area (Calf to ankle). I found your video yesterday, tried it as soon as I got home from work and today, the clicking is much less! Almost can’t hear or feel it. I’m in shock it was so easy and that it worked so quickly. I felt tightness in my calf that I just couldn’t loosen - I don’t even feel the tightness as much! Thank you so much!!! I am going to continue the exercises.

Thanks so much for the vid. Had been running for 2 years with no Injuries. 2 months ago I ended up with peroneal Tendonitis (including pain near toes and also all the way up the leg), ankle clicking, and extreme tightness in the back. I had no idea that they might be connected, but your video makes complete sense. I'd recently lost hope of being able to complete my first marathon, or any other races, because I'd be trying some band exercises for peroneal Tendonitis but the pain just kept coming back. Trying these exercises, relief was almost instant! I'm hopeful at least there is a road to recovery, and it starts from addressing all the issues. Really appreciate the video, and I'll be tuning in for more tips.

Sprained ankle many times, many years ago, twice with full bodyweight coming down on left ankle jumping over a gate and landing unevenly on dried, baked hard tractor wheel ruts. Holy Moly! That perineum tendon and muscle was tight as hell. I found the spot 👍up top of the perineal tendon and even just 5 min with a roller released a whole load of tension in the ankle. Top, top video. Many thanks. Edit: also seems to have reduced the clunking I had in my hip area and it appears compensation was happening in the calf too. I have so much more spring that I can now hop on what was previously a pretty messed up ankle with little strength, stability and range of movement. Absolutely brilliant. Chuffed to bits. Thanks again for sharing.

I only began working out (gym, going outside, x amount of steps per day, sometimes sports) after sedentary lifestyle of 5-6 years and to be honest I feel like mine clicks less now. It sure still clicks a lot especially during the moment I do jumping jacks. It seems that exercise does something to my ankles and it loves to click but when I try normal motion it clicks less 2-3 times than when I began working out. Also seeing massive change when I go up the stairs, almost no clicks. Hope over time it ends for good, but I'm still happy with results I see now.

I recently found this video after going for a long run (8 miles) for the first time in a while and waking up the next morning with some pretty intense pain on the outside of the arch which I kind of narrowed down to either Cuboid Syndrome or Peroneal Tendonitis. As I started doing research to help understand the pain it dawned on me that I was never questioning the reason why my ankles seem to have always cracked when I rotate them. Kind of interesting to find that it may ALSO be connected to the Peroneal Tendon. Really like how you stress the connection between the system through ankles->calves->knees->hips->low back. Gonna give some of these exercises a try and see if they help me out some.

Marathoner here. Developed outside ankle pain in the right side during my last marathon prep. Nothing crazy but felt it. Strength training helped a lot. But my ankles still clicked and after hard session I still feel a small pain. Now I did your foam rolling exercixes and felt instant relief. Tissue felt relaxed and my ankle clicked really loud afterwards. I think there was a lot of tension in the muscles. Strength training is fine, but I think it also adds tension to the muscles. Need to find a good balance between running, strength training, stretching and foam rolling. What do you think about massage guns? I think i can do that sheering and moving while using it as well? Thanks from germany, keep up the great work. I will definitely incorporate your exercises in my routine!

It's been like this on both my feet since I was in elementary school or earlier. I've never had any ankle injuries. @@YourWellnessNerd I’ve had a bad lower back a couple years ago and still go to the chiropractor occasionally now. There was a time 1/2 years back that I would have pain every night and morning in my lower back and struggle to move if I didn’t stretch. It’s much better now as I’ve slowly incorporated back strengthening exercises to my workout. But I do also think my inner hip (groin area) rotation and strength are very poor. Any videos or tips on that? Also I’d like to ask when do you think is optimal to stretch like this. I wake up and workout at 5:30am 6 days a week and normally head straight to work with little time to spare. Is it fine doing things at night or is it best to do them sometime before working out. Which in my case would be right when I wake up. I plan to add these stretch’s into my new daily routine. Also if you have any back or hip videos or stretches you’d recommend as well? Thanks so much!! i dont just have clicking, i have a violent snapping in my ankle and i broke my spine when i was 17. thats about when this snapping started. im 28 now. its now started impact my ability to walk. it did not used to hurt. I thought it was a nitrogen deposit like what my pcp told me it was 10 years ago so i didnt think much of it. "dont worry about it until your in pain is" what he told me. well now i see its definitely related to back issues as well as rolling my ankles too many times in middle school sports.... I took a Gua Sha to it the other day and i wasnt in violent pain today for most the day i wasnt limping for most the day. can you make a whole follow up for people with more than just a little clicking but 10 years of very loud snapping? Oh and I have EDS so thats probably not helping anything. i do not have those tools and im poor but i do have a Gua Sha

I have ankle clicking and clicking on the the side of my calf. It’s like something is constantly adjusting. No pain. Just a weird click.

Hi Grant, thank you for this! It was really helpful. I've had always had a click - and a bit of pain now - in my left ankle. I tried some of the exercises you recommended and I can see that my peroneal muscles and ankle are very tight. To be honest, even after 5-10 minutes there already seems to a be a bit of relief. What kind of frequency would you recommend doing the exercises and stretches? I workout most days so could always incorporate them as part of a cool down. Don't want to overdo it frequency wise so any recommendations would be much appreciated. Thanks again

Great to hear it helps! As a rule I get my patients to do it enough so that they feel they're making progress which is usually every day.

Hey I hope you get to reply to this since I’ve had this issue since I was about 18 and had an ankle operation. But my ankle starts to feel a little tight, like locked up but after I click it it feels like a massive release. So what I want to know if the tips from this video will get me on the road to recover?

Unfortunately I can't offer any specific advice over the net without assessing you mate. The exercises in the video are great to help release some of the stiffness and tightness associated with ankles that click. If thats was contributing to a patients ankle feeling like it locks id expect them to see some progress. Genuinely hope they help!

Any idea how something like this could happen somewhat spontaneously? I never had this issue until a few months ago. Both my ankles started to have this popping Tendon every time I moved them in a certain way. It doesn't hurt much, but it's uncomfortable, and I'm often sat feeling like I need to "pop" the Tendon to release tension every so often. I haven't been doing any serious walking or running. The only thing I could trace it to was a new pair of sandals I bought around the same time. Could that cause the issue?
@YourWellnessNerd
@YourWellnessNerd 2 месяца назад
Hi mate from my clinical experience things that tend to happen spontaneously or feel like they come on out of nowhere often mask the fact that things may have been building up slowly overtime in the background without a person realising. Typically, when we notice the onset of something that wasn’t traumatic it’s good to think of this as the last straw rather than the start of something new. so while it can absolutely feel like something spontaneous and brand-new there is typically a legacy of surrounding tissue stiffness or tightness or weakness or poor loading somewhere but the catch is that you often have to look for it to find it. Hope things have improved since you posted your comment!

My ankles click when I roll them. It's accompanied with tendon pain. I did physical therapy for 8-10 months weekly but it never went away! I even had dry needling done almost that whole time as well. So hopefully this helps

What if nothing seems to ever release the tightness in your back no matter how long you lay on balls or get massages. What can you do for longterm chronic tightness?
@YourWellnessNerd
@YourWellnessNerd 3 месяца назад
Generally it requires an environmental shift where each person needs to consider why that area has become tight and which daily shapes and postures might be asking things to be tight in the first place. Strength may help some as well.

@YourWellnessNerd

The exercises go after some of the hidden mechanical reasons behind why an ankle can click and pop, if that links in with what you feel it may help!

Surely doing any kind of ankle movement is going to stop the clicking for a while? Mine has clicked my whole life, but if I deliberately make it click a few dozen times, it eventually settles down and is quiet for a little while.
@YourWellnessNerd

It really depends Esther. Finding the source of that clicking means you have an opportunity to solve it for good.

All the videos that I have watched as far as a popping tendon go to the tendon on the outer park of the ankle. That is not where I am having the popping noise. I'm having it at what feels like the top of the foot. About 1in below where the foot meets the leg.

If I don’t pop/click it constantly then it hurts really bad - especially while lying down. It’s been like this for years. I did screw my ankles up multiple times in high school from cheerleading. It’s progressing & is much worse now. 😩

I have had clicking in my ankles for years and they seem to coincide with my plantar fasciitis which I have been battling. There is a positive correlation between clicking and pain. My question for the last few years has been what is causing my pain, is it the tightness which in turn causes the clicking or muscular weakness? I know my plantar fascia tissue being overloaded is at the root of my injury, but I am a young very athletic 23yo male who used to work out and play sports very frequently although less so no because of the injury so it seems odd to me that my muscles are weak when they look well defined and larger than average. I have tried calf stretching and foot stretching but that seems to provide only temporary relief. Any thoughts?

Hi Shay! I can’t speak to your specific issues over the internet without assessing you unfortunately. However from a general perspective, if a few things are going on at the same time it’s less likely they are seperate issues and more likely symptoms of a deeper issue. Clinically I find plantar fasciitis and perineal dysfunction can relate to underlying ankle joint stiffness and even lower back dysfunction - but you’d possibly need to have someone figure it out for you if you don’t feel comfy doing it yourself.

i’ve recently have destroyed my ankle, two injuries back to back. nothing to my knowledge is sprained though but now my ankle is clicking when i walk on it. should i wait until i have reduced swelling to try these exercises? i can feel tension in my peroneal for sure but i haven’t found relief through rolling it out
@YourWellnessNerd
@YourWellnessNerd 9 месяцев назад
It really depends mate, I can't give any specific advice over the internet, but from a general standpoint, working on any tight, restricted tissue away from the injured site is often safe if it feels comfortable. Best to have is assessed in person for the best advice.

I can't really give specific advice over the internet without assessing you first Marcie. Speaking generally, exercises that work away from the direct site of pain may be helpful for people to do, but its best to get some specific advice from your Physio to make sure its appropriate for you at this time.
