Learn the basics of storing your car long-term. Long-term car storage requires some foresight to ensure the health of the car when you return. As the car sits fuel deteriorates, fluids slowly drain, the battery dies, tires develop flats pots, and animals make your exhaust their home. In this guide I go over preventative measures and tips to make sure the car starts right up, the engine stays healthy, and the paint stays intact.

Nice job. As a trickle charger on my Camry, I tied into the trunk light fixture (it's always hot), and brought a wire up to a $20 Solar panel. The panel can sit on the rear shelf and constantly trickle, or the panel can be brought outside the car and hung in a garage window for long term trickle charging. Gotta love the simplicity of solar for this application!

Good tips, but have to disagree on the rodent protection. I can tell you from experience that cloth materials like that is just free nesting materials for them, and may even attract them to those spots. If they want to go through, it won't even slow them down. I use copper mesh (you can buy it on Amazon, because they won't chew through it)

I was just about to say the same thing. We've never had problems with rodent inside the garage is the city, but definitely up north with the atvs and boats. I might suggest a mind chemical deterent like moth balls, but I can't speak to wherher or not that could possibly damage high proforance car parts with long tern exposure.

FYI - I stored my car under a car cover and the headliner separated from the heat build up. I then did a tarp with moving blankets not realizing that the now rainy environment would cause my clear coat to completely blister where the blankets got wet. Car ports or structures that don't touch the car and allow air are best and cheaper than a clear coat redo...

Good tips all around, only thing i would add is depending on how long your car is going to be in storage you might want to change the oil before storage and then right again before the first startup. Oil does have a shelf life and if its in storage long enough that oil might be due for a change. Just personally, I change my oil about a month before storage, then park it in early November. Then change the oil again in April before i start it up again.

Only use Sta-Bil "Blue" Marine formula because it removes water and works to combat the effects of ethanol. The red formula does not. Storing the wipers lifted off the windshield is excellent--I haven't heard of this one. Also, you can wipe the blades with a heavy coat of Rain-X and let it air dry. As well, you can wipe the blades with lighter coat of Rain-X any time as it does a nice restorative treatment to the blades. I use Rain-X on the exterior of all the windows except the windshield. The reason is it causes the wipers to drag on the windshield and strains the wiper motor. But it won't do this if you just use it on the blades.

@msw600
@msw600 6 лет назад
Starting the car once a week should be ok. Driving it 2x a month should keep it good. Long term storage is months not one week. Car cover should prevent rodents too. No need to clog muffler with car cover. It doesn't necessarily have to be driven at highway speeds if it's driven for several minutes non stop. Ideally highway speed yes. Oil should still heat up to a decent temperature to rid of moisture. Cover could be put on after using car for a few minutes in a non polluted area where there is hardly any traffic.

Mice will easily get by those towels. Only packed in steel wool prevents them since they can’t bite thru it. Separately they will still live live in the engine bay if around. I let my cat run around the garage at night. I’m going to have my wife drive my car once a week also but really, your car is not in storage then. This is how i do it (i keep a lot of cars from my relatives that pay a visit) Give your car a simple wash and dry it out. Remove the battery with the car unlocked and your key in the pocket. Charge up the battery and put it somewhere like a basement where tempreture is constant (18°C) and normal moiscure. If you have one of those car covers put it on top. If possible put the car in a garage but make sure that you dont have mice issues or else gg

On newer cars, completely disconnecting the battery and removing it will reset the car's computer and for some car owners that may be unwanted. Better option is to get a float or trickle charger to keep your battery charged preventing it from dying.
