I wanted to run through how I have been putting my boat on the car with the J-Hooks. It’s worked out really well so far and the concept is just about the same for any boat! Hope this helps and enjoy!
I have found that running the strap over the kayaks, around the flat bar at back, and back up takes the stress off of the J bar. I pass my front two straps inside the front of J, and secure around the flat bar. This way all the pressure is on the flat bars. Hooking the back top of J causes pressure that makes it want to lean forward. Small detail but long term can save your J hooks
I’m curious as to why you suggest having room to put your hand under the strap. I just figured you’d want it tight as possible. I’m a bit paranoid after my kayak nearly fell off on the freeway this weekend.
Over tightening would be a concern with ratchet straps. I can’t imagine you could truly overtighten by hand with a cam strap. I want mine tight as a tick.
WOOHOOOO! One thing I really like to do now is at least run one if not both of the straps through the grab handles on the boat for added security. But this worked quite well and I actually got into a car accident and the boat didn’t move!
Hey Hunter Have you tried hauling your CK1 in J-Hooks? I know crescent says to haul them flat. I was just curious if anyone has tried them in the J-hooks
Good to know! I'm picking mine up this week. Do you lay them upside down on the roof rack? Use any pads for protection? Also, how do you store your CK1? Thanks!!
The kayak wont fly out fron the back when you drive right? Im so nervous about tieing it down just over the side 2 times like that and having it fly throught the back 🫠
Nope, after posting this video I actually got into an accident and it never moved! You can thread the webbing through the grab handles for added security also! I wish I had actually gone through doing that on the video as well!
If you go through the grab handles on the kayak with the straps, it should alleviate the need for them. But it’s always good to have em and not need em kinda deal rather than need em and not have em. Excellent question!
I'll only do the front line on longer trips. When that front line tightens up, I know the J bar straps have loosened and pull over. I don't trust ratchet straps or the kayak straps that came with my J bars. The buckles loosen while driving over time.
It’s a Thule Evo Wing design! I went to etrailer.com and put in my vehicle and it showed me different options for it! This one was aesthetically the best looking for my car I thought!
