That looks like a great move for fighters who are more boxing focused but want to have a good defense against leg kicks. Anderson Silva did a good (although unplanned) demonstration of it's effectiveness!

Have you ever had a hard kick properly checked!? It fucking HURTS! You gain a lot by checking a kick. You can break legs with a proper check. What you gain, is their leg hurts(less power gets loaded into punches when legs are disabled or in pain), and they're less likely to do it again. The reason your leg can break like Anderson did, is sparring too much. He most likely was sparring hard and practicing that kick a ton, causing small micro fractures there. Had he rested and allowed it to heal more before the match, I don't think it would happen. It can also be a sign of steroid use too. Which, for Andersons age, I wouldn't say is out of the realm of possibility. One of the meds they use to prevent gynocomastia is an estrogen blocker. Thing is, as a male, you need some estrogen. It helps with bone density. If you take those meds too much, the risk of breaking something is much higher.

Yes it's true I already knew this but alot of people dont. I cant think of 1 pro fight where a kicker broke another kickers leg from kicking it but we can think of times where the kicker got his leg broken from checks.

Great video, one question though, what if they are kicking higher, as in more to the outside thigh? you kinds of addressed it in that you referred to it as more Muay Thai, are you saying that doesn't really happen on the street? or did I misunderstand? I can see your defense would work really well for the other strikes as you demonstrated, thanks for sharing.
@ThePitOnlineDojo

If they are kicking higher to the outside of the thigh.... like Pedro Rizo did against Gan McGee... turn our foot out, and trade the leg kick for a right hand. The right hand will always win.... watch the beginning of this video (I worked Gan's corner this fight) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-vC00uy9SToM.html

Getting ur kick checked hurts like fuck and if u have good balance u can throw a teep instantly after checking someone’s kick
@TonyqTNT
@TonyqTNT 5 лет назад
Yeah, that's provided he's throwing round kicks. If he fakes and switches to a low side kick or Filipino ankle stomp destruction a la Michael Janich your leg or knee joint is gone if you have all weight on the leg being kicked. What about taking the weight off the leg being attacked, swinging it back and then in a follow up motion as your leg swings forward use that momentum of the foot moving to round kick into the opponents jaw? Don't get me wrong against a low round kick your technique would be painfully effective but for me I would feel like taking a big risk putting all my weight on that front leg.
@ShinkaTV
@ShinkaTV 5 лет назад
great point. I would say it has to do with timing and perception, though. You don't parry a hook, either.
@TonyqTNT
@TonyqTNT 5 лет назад
@@ShinkaTV Yeah, I learned that lesson the hard way. I used to extend my arms to block hooks until I learned to glue my gloves to my cheeks and swivel my upper torso to dissipate the hooks.

Actually for any of your listed kicks, putting the weight on your leg and bending your knee probably the safest bet. And if somebody is able to chamber a roundhouse kick and then switch itMid kick and you are not fast enough to catch that, Then you're probably drunk.... But if you putYour weight on your front leg and did not bend your knee adequately, You are 100% correct, I think that's what you're talking about.Either way thank you very muchFor your input.

@@ThePitOnlineDojo Hi John, I'm sure you are infinite more experienced than me, but I think there is a danger if you put weight on your front leg. I had my leg almost broken once in a spar/play with friend. He did a karate side kick to my front leg (I wasn't checking), at the time I had my weight on front leg too. He was a little more forceful than should. Don't get me wrong, I think what you did is effective against low round kick. But if your attacker does a round kick to upper (meaty part) leg, the usual muay Thai check is still the best. I also feel getting out of the way is the best for front side kick.

you had a good point but soiled the bed suggesting a head kick in a street fight... much easier, more effective and safer would be to kick to the supporting leg or lower body.

@kension333

@@ThePitOnlineDojo I disagree. There are plenty of fighters in mma successfully using low kicks and calf kicks. Justin Gaethje being one recently who uses it a lot, Jose also is notorious for using it, etc. I think you are missing one of the main reasons you attack the legs. You do it to take away power from their strikes as well. A lot of the time when striking, you use your legs and hips just as much as your arm. It decreases your ability for dynamic movement. Which, takes away power all around. As Muay Thai/Kun Khmer duder, I know that if I can kick your back leg to hell, I just took the power out of your cross and dominant.

Calling Bullshido... Even if you turn the leg outwards, unless you've been conditioned your legs can't withstand 10 heavy blows to the thigh or inside leg. Also, the guys (instructors) punching guard is awful. At the point he's explaining so well how effective he will (4:28) be, he drops his left guard and would get countered to the jaw with a hook. He also seems to walk around with his chin in the air. Any boxer, kick boxer or Muay Thai fighter would likely destroy this guy within a couple of minutes. Fair play to you sir and god bless you but when you punch you're wide open and for a lateral fighter you'd take damage. Also, allowing the leg to flow on anticipation of a kick dissipates energy; standing there SOLID as you suggest is not a good idea...you should move laterally to the side the kick is coming from so its not at full power/speed. ANyway, god bless, this is a respectful message but if you want to learn to fight, go to a boxing or Muay Thai gym where you can have proper fights in a controlled setting. Most Karate, Taikwondo and other systems work on a points stoppage and reset rule...this is not reflective of a street fight so kind of don't get this guys point at all.

You need to shoot your tutorials against a NEUTRAL or GREY or WHITE b.g. You're both dressed TOTALLY in BLACK against a b.g. of BLACK punching bags, on a partially Black mat. Not what you should be doing. You want you & your partner to POP OUT against the background by CONTRASTING with it. Even if you changed your Gis to RED or YELLOW that would've been infinitely preferable. You also need to get your camera CLOSER to the two subjects. I'm talking from the POV of a Cinematographer whose looked (and cringed) at otherwise well meaning posters, who were good teachers, but who greatly diminished the effectiveness of their tutorials by not knowing the Basics of Cinematic composition. Whenever I see Tutorials posted and about 50% of the screen is blank, wasted space, the cameraman/director is doing something wrong. Get a college Film Student to shoot future tutorials for you (and also hire a Sound Man or simply have a clip-on lapel mic attached to you. Your Videos will improve by 1000%!!! Remember, there's a hundred other guys shooting the EXACT similar material on RU-vid, give them a reason to watch your tutorials rather than theirs!!!

Thank you for not calling me a bunch of names! I often get that from 20-somethings when I say that they've done a terrific job on something, (and many are Incredibly talented at their hobbies or crafts) but that they shouldn't be shooting their video tutorials like an MTV promo IF they can help it. It's often a big IF. If you can't, then better to just shoot it and at least put it out there even if it's not 100% perfect. I've noticed several sites in recent years (This TKD practitioner name Shane Fazen on "Fight TIps" , Another named TTravis from "Fight Smart" (who combined a biting sense of wit with great Editing) and several others, are putting a great deal of production values into their RU-vid vids. .............................................................Then again, they're also selling classes & videos etc, so they have to have superior production values to separate themselves from the rest. But I'm merely speaking as a no-longer-young-guy-but-old-guy in his 60s who got hooked by a long departed TV show called "The Green Hornet" which featured some unknown Asian side kick named Bruce Lee as Kato. .............................................................. I later developed an interest in the Graphic arts, especially Cinematography and I'll often see young people who have better Video equipment than I could ever afford, go out & shoot something, and as long as its in focus, they add a few graphics and post. That's obviously NOT you but amazing how many times I've pointed out some basic suggestions to people & have been told to do physiologically impossible things to myself!................................................. BTW, I've recently been in a debate with a friend about Pros & Cons of Kicks in Street Fights so THAT'S what actually drew me to your channel!! All My Best. - DJ
