We just bought an old home and I've been looking for ideas for the basement stairs. This is so helpful! Thank you!

I like the 2x4 "wall" idea. I plan to use it to reinforce my steps. I broke one the other day, and it was a good thing it was carpeted or I might have been injured. Thanks for the ideal.

This is excellent for old wobbly stairs. I hope to then build out shelves on each side of the supporting wall for CD/DVD open storage. It’s going to take perfect measurements for a lot of steps because the frame will need to be nailed on the bottom then moved into place.

Thank you so so much for this video, whoever flipped our house never did it properly and the stringers would have been a pain in the rear to do, this was much easier and I think it's even sturdier, knocked it out this weekend. One suggestion if I may make is to use a ram set on a TREATED lumber on the floor supporting all the rest, just for precaution. Again, thank you so much for helping me make my stairs safer and well supported!

You're welcome, but I need you to remove any suggestive product information from your comment. You're right though, you can use powder actuated pneumatic fastening devices if that would make it easier. Thanks again for the nice comment.

,hello there, I'm a carpinter. I can teach you how to cut stringers very fast. I know is difficult for most people, but I do it every day.

If you want to keep the underneath area clear, what I did was add 1x1’s to the back of the each stair and attached the risers to those. Each of my stairs started beyond where the front part of the above step ended, so no chance for risers with existing stairs. Came out looking great, strong and silent.

This is how my stairs are right now actually. Only thing different is the "wall" is only on one side which I thought was weird. Didn't know if it was needed so that's why I was on here. Had some water damage downstairs and the "wall" wood was badly damaged.... probly multiple times before we moved in. I was wondering if I needed to redo it or not. I do like the idea to help support especially in an older house so I am going to redo the "wall" but to keep the storage I'm going to brace both sides and not down just the center or like the previous home owners did only on 1 side which I'm still confused why only on the left side but w.e.

Great idea. I have a stairway of this design, but there's no flat floor beneath it so this plan won't work (it's the stairs from 1st to 2nd floor, the basement stairs are directly below). This won't work for me, but it gives me some ideas!

I messed up and used only 2 stringers for my outdoor steps and Im missing a middle stringer. will this work for my situation? I have a total of 9 steps. I can see the stringers or treads slightly moving when walking up and down them. I already glued on the treads. thank you. what would your suggestion be?
@stairbuilding
@stairbuilding 4 года назад
I won't be able to answer that question, but I would imagine that if the steps are moving that most building inspectors wouldn't approve it.

My basement staircase doesn't have stringers supporting from the bottom. It has dados cut into the side "stringers" and the steps and risers slot into them. Now the steps are settling out of the dados and I need to find a way to repair. Will this work for that? The stairs are also carpeted with risers and the stairwell is finished like the rest of the basement

Most of the time I would like to say yes, but if it changes the height of your stair steps to where they might not meet local building codes than the answer would be no.

Do I need to worry about "bounce" at all if I do this? You mentioned it in a different stair video. I'd like to reinforce my stairs but don't want to do it in a way that could lead to issues down the line.
@stairbuilding

It will depend on the design and method of repairs. I think the best advice I could give would be if they are currently moving, then you might need to add a wall or beam under the stairs.

What type of board do you use on the concrete? You keep saying “treated”. I am a DYIer and have little to no knowledge of carpentry. Also how do you secure the “treated” board to concrete?
@chrisrioux
@chrisrioux 2 месяца назад
He means Pressure Treated wood. It’s the slightly green colored lumber that is treated with chemicals (used to be arsenic, I think), that prevents it from rotting when subjected to moisture/wet environment, like damp basements. (Just make sure you cut and drill these type boards in open air/well-ventilated area, like outside or big garage with open doors, and wear a dust mask/ventilator as it’s toxic to your health. It’s fine once the cutting is done, just avoid splinters. The most secure way of anchoring it to concrete is to shoot concrete nails/anchors into the floor with a concrete nail gun (looks like a big chisel that you load a bullet-looking thing into along with the nail/anchor, then with ear and eye protection (and warning everyone else in the house, you hit the top side with a hammer once, hard, and it fires the gun powder bullet that pushes the nail/anchor into the cement. You’d likely only need 2-3 for this project. Alternatively, you could potentially also just add two additional boards on the floor in the shape of a V to the sides of the stairs to prevent it from moving side to side. This would have the added benefit of being less permanent if you ever decided to install a proper set of stairs with 3 supports rather that 2+support structure.

I tried 1"x2" in a truss form. . From left to right on the underside, 12feet heightdifference, and I was +300 pounds. Superstabil.

Very interesting - thank you. What about this - add a 2x4 across the underside of each step. Attach the 2x4 to the stringers with hangers, and insert drywall screws through the top of the step into the added 2x4 underneath.

I think I know what you're talking about and it should work.

Yep ,run it across the step underneath the tread from stringer to stringer , glue and screw support into the tread and stringer , be careful not to put the screws through the tread , support with couple of deadmen over night , cut two pieces of wood for extra support to place under each end , also screwed and glued into stringer each side , saves on wood and you dont lose any storage , stopped my stairs from moving and sweaking

Great idea. His method will work on steps on concrete floor, other set is from foyer to 2nd floor. I can only get to underside from slant in closet ceiling underneath. I may just do that. The house was built in 2955 with oak treads on 2syringers 36” wide. Now there are horizontal cracks on some stairs but I don’t want to remove all treads and such, still in good condition. This may work.

I would consider myself to be more of a carpenter, but have spent a lot of time designing homes and drew the plans for most of the room additions I built.
@stevenolsen6360
@stevenolsen6360 2 года назад
at time 1.45, why not just add a new tread, atop the old tread and over the new riser, so the riser will bear the weight, and save the storage area under the stair
@stairbuilding
@stairbuilding 2 года назад
Because it will usually raise the riser height on the one below and lower it on the one above, creating a building code problem.
