i see a beautiful personal trainer that i use to work with and all i ever saw her do was sumo deadlifts and squats. she had the nicest ass i ever seen just amazing and it takes all the meatheads out of sync when she is working out. so I'm guessing that what the ladys want on us too. it just sucks for me cause i keep hitting my right knee cap on the way down. any suggestions?

For my proportions I feel the sumo deadlift is 100x more comfortable for me. What annoys me is when people try to discredit the lift for being sumo instead of conventional lol
@David-lu4th
@David-lu4th 8 лет назад
They say it's the path of the bar and its shorter, blah blah. It's funny cause they wouldn't give the same kind of chit to someone who close grip benches 315, or wide grip benches 315. Both can be equally impressive to the average person right? 315lbs is 315lbs right? I personally think it's stupid. This is coming from a guy thats pulled 410 conventional and 405 sumo. Keep in mind I'm 5'11 and 155lbs. Weight is weight, it doesn't lie. In my opinion switch between conventional and sumo regularly
@kyoukan91
@kyoukan91 4 года назад
@@David-lu4th There's a a specific standard in powerlifting as to how wide your bench can be. As a general rule people accept it because thats the rule. People see sumo as a nearly entirely different lift. Which frankly it is. When you have people skirting the lift in competition-- it rubs people the wrong way, because mechanically Sumo is easier and the overwhelming majority of people will pull higher numbers sumo than conventional. Just as a little aside strongman explicitly bans sumo pulling because it is a different lift.

Vertical shins, wow what a great tip. I've watched a hundred of these videos (99 by Alan) and never picked up on that. Also, great tip about pushing feet into floor, not pulling with back. Huge difference in what you can pull with that simple trick.I'm 6'3" and 6' of that is legs, so conventional I am fighting my knees in the way, with sumo, my legs have a place to get out of the bars way. Off to the gym to practice these tips. Thanks dudes!!

Thanks again for this video Allen. I hurt my back about 18 months ago and tweaked it pretty good . I’m just getting back to the gym and deadlifting . Some of the tips I saw In this video and the part 2 really got me back to some basics . After a herniated disc , I’m three weeks back in the gym and pulling 315 for reps pain free. It really is cool how free content like this can really help . Before my injury I was over 500lbs double overhand sumo , and doing 405 for reps so a late intermediate probably , but I’m looking forward to hitting some advanced numbers

I think Marks blurb on GPP is spot on. You can specialize without over doing it. He benched himself into elbow pain and now works pretty hard on alleviating it and working on his mobility or so I gather from his social media stuff. That's why he's the people's coach. These three and Omar Asschest make up the best people's coaching team we could ask for.

Brilliant stuff. ----- 2 Questions though 1. you mention no lifting in running shoes (been looking at lifting shoes but yet to commit) -- I have "flat" feet, overpronation.. so on. I've been trying to correct this with numerous exercises and stretches as I heard it is just a muscular imbalance. I have orthotics in my shoes. Will lifting bare foot be better or worse for me? 2. I'm currently doing 531. 4 days a week as stated, 1-2 days are cardio/mobility days. I've been learning how to clean with the help of your videos on one of those cardio days. When would be a good time to use sumo's? should I practice them with a light weight when I do my cleans to get technique in and then try them once I start to slow down on 531. Thanks again for the epic content

Not a pro just a bro but lifting barefoot is better then running shoes cheap route and completely functional would be wrestling shoes or converse I just bought nike's romelos 2 and I'm completely in love with them it's like wearing magnets for the floor I'm pretty positive I've seen Alan wear them in some of his videos too

Sumo isn’t cheating. Personally, I have a nagging knee injury and pulling sumo doesn’t irritate that injury. I can pull 10x more weight with no pain than I can with conventional and lots of pain. My knee starts acting up around 250 when I do traditional. Pulling over 425 and there’s ZERO pain in my knee. Stop telling people sumo is cheating. Because I promise if you’re a conventional deadlifter, I can take your 1rm, make you pull sumo and you won’t budge it. It’s not an easier movement, it’s a different movement. You’d expect somebody like mark bell or Allan thrall to know this shit.

Takeaways for me - Shins straight compared to conventional deadlift - Point your feet out to let the bar clear your knees on the way up - Sink your hips low, raise your chest and pull the slack out of the bar. Hips should be lower than Shoulders before the lift. - Breathe in before the lift and tighten your abs

@kopman18
@kopman18 2 года назад
Hi Alan, the shins are flush with the barbell in the starting position yes? I know from a conventional deadlift video of yours that you started with the shins roughly 1 inch away from the barbell and then pushed the shins to the barbell before executing the lift..

I think from a day to day perspective if you need strength to lift something heavy from the floor the sumo is more applicable to lifting objects in real life especially heavy awkward things.

For some strange reason I get lower back pains from doing Sumo Deadlifts. These typically come the next day and last about a week. There must be something I'm doing wrong? I normally do vanilla deadlifts and even after hard sessions I don't experience this type of long lasting aching pain. Can anyone drop some advice?
@TribalKatz

Treat it as it's own lift slowly build up and get the form correct before basing it off your conventional 1rm. If you deadlift 405 conventional you can't jump straight into a 3x5 sumo workout at 315lbs
