Realistically, the chances of you being in this situation where all of the safety precautions on the elevator fail in addition to the cable snapping is slim to none. You probably have a higher chance of being crushed to death getting on and off the elevator honestly.

Lifts can’t actually free fall, it really depends how cheap the lift is, if the cables snap there is a safety brake cable that enables the brakes and it stops. The brakes cannot fall off as they are heavily attached onto the car. If the safety brake cable snaps the counterweight will fall but the brakes will remain locked in position. What im trying to say is that no matter how soft the cables are, it will not fall.

I usually dreamt of free falling from a very high place (the usual) and then wake up afterwards, but it eventually escalated into riding an elevator, getting stuck, then immediately free fall into the oblivion. But during the elevator dreams, i cant seem to wake up after hitting the ground.

I got stuck in an elevator while my mother was having a heart attack. She was in surgery at the time of the incident but I was still supposed to be there when she woke up but I was still in the elevator. Shocking stuff.

Thing is, you're much more likely to have an accident in the stairs. How do I know? Because I overstepped once and ended up in ER. Another time I slipped and fell. Both times I was running downstairs. Elevators and planes are statistically a lot safer than stairs and cars.

Before this, I thought I'd prefer falling in an elevator, to being trapped in an elevator. Now I'm 50/50, no preference.

The actual casualty happens due to fire that breaks out from a falling elevator not from the impact.

I don't think our S-shaped spines are designed for horizontal impact. Lying completely flat may not be the best way. Getting your spine closest to the ground might be better. Maybe have your knees up as you lie flat? I don't know. What about the head and neck? I might have my fingers interlocked behind my head and thumbs down the back of neck. Thoughts anyone?

It happened to me 2 times , my advice is dont stand still stay in kinda crouch position because it hurts your kneecaps like hell, as a 20 year old man that time i was about to cry because of the pain . And i was the lucky one because my cousin still get surgeries from his knees.

Just had an elevator fail crash down a few feet slowly. Even then the impact was strong, friends and I ended up with cramps in back / core. Now watching this

I wasn’t scared of elevators but now I am....

If the elevator shaft is normal, with all the doors shut (because the elevator is not "at" a particular floor), the elevator will be cushioned a lot by the air trapped underneath it. And if it's a recently made elevator, where particular attention is given to having an elevator "well fitted" to the elevator shaft, that cushion will be incredibly effective in slowing down the max drop speed. But what to do to maximize survival? When you start the drop, whip off your belt, lift the roof door (ALL Elevators have them) enough to trap the buckle above the roof door. Get a good grip on the belt, suspending yourself under the roof door, and hold on for dear life. The force of impact when the elevator hits bottom will almost certainly make you lose your grip on the belt, but NOT before you have expended a considerable amount of your momentum. Possibly even reducing it by half. Possibly changing a fatal accident into an impact that breaks no bones. Also aiding you will be that the elevator roof, on impact, will bend downward with you, at a diminished speed, and improve the effectiveness of your belt-grip deceleration . The object is to survive...not look cool.

Fun fact. Due to an elevators counterweight it's way more likely to ascend in the event of a catastrophic failure than go plummeting down.

tbh the only thing about elevators that im scared of are the static shocks lol. i was in an elevator once during the winter and every contact i had with a metal surface shocked me. i would rather choose to die from an elevator falling than by electric shock.

elevator free falling is actually quite common. usually the brakes are there to slow or stop down the fall providing you have enough elevation.

One of my recurring nightmares. Being inside an elevator and it would keep going higher and higher until it’s higher than the building, shooting up in the skies. Then it stops and I wait for it to fall, then I wake up. 😣
