Is this not a common lesson in USA? I think I was 4 when I was first taught about rips in Australia... Honestly curious.

In the US it's really dependent on where you are from, places like Florida, Hawaii, California, etc are fairly well versed in learning/teaching this at a young age but if you live in a landlocked state here I don't think it occurs to parents to teach their kids about this which is how so many vacationers end up in tragic accidents every year here. I am from a landlocked state but go to the beach every summer and expressed interest in surfing at a young age so luckily my dad taught me about them young.
