How to visit a French grocery store matched with a bike crash on the day I was trying out to be a bike tour guide. - Splitting the day up into two videos within one video is as confusing as one video making two videos about a video videoing a video. Do you see what I'm dealing with here?? Thanks Lottie for the amazing art! It's not in the vlog, but if you check out my new avatar on Instagram you'll see her fantastic rendition of my glorious beard.

Sac OR Cabas not both at once those auto checkouts crack me up with that. For the reccord Cabas is a "old french" word for "a bag that use for groceries". You'll hearr old people using the word alone because well a "cabas" IS a bag no need to precise it ^^
@JaySwanson
@JaySwanson 7 лет назад
Awesome! Thanks for the clarification, I would have made that mistake the rest of my life.
@sig4311
@sig4311 7 лет назад
Yeah the auto checkout machines are saying both words because in some region old people got confused a bit. So they say both. But the voice should pause more clearly between the two to make it known that those are two separate words ^^ Don't mess with French eldery talk or they get cranky and if there is one thing that you learn dirt quick in France when you work retail "Don't ever under ANY circumstance piss off a grandma XD "
@JaySwanson
@JaySwanson 7 лет назад
Yeah, grandma is always the last on my list to piss off. The machines also always tell you "une hotesse va intervenir" with a little image of a blonde woman, and it's usually a scruffy dude who ends up helping you out.
@sig4311
@sig4311 7 лет назад
Well over here we got little bit of both actually. But given that the "hostess" is generally securrity guy or girl. I assume you live in a corner of Paris were not that many woman work security ^^

Catching up on a few vlogs after after a week of extra rehearsals and a ridiculous amount of time spent on our ridiculously complex taxes. The music/editing the last couple blogs has been stellar! Everyone's going to have their perspective on your editing, humor, etc. which is great....but never let it impinge on your spontaneity. It's what makes the vlog authentic, funny, introspective, and undeniably you.

This is super helpful. I am going to Paris for the first time in two weeks and my anxiety about "doing it wrong" in the grocery store is only outweighed by my fear of "doing it wrong" going through a Metro turnstile. I'm also afraid that a cashier is going to bark at me in French and I won't know what she's saying, and the few French phrases I know will desert me. I have bought groceries all over Germany, Holland, Austria and Norway so I don't know why I'm having angst. Sacre bleu!

Glad this helps! Just remember that making an effort is better than nothing - as long as you're trying, people will see it and give you much more grace than if you didn't. You'll do great!

I am glad thia videos exist I was going to comment on a grocery video. I know a lot of them vary. It seems they are like some US stores depending on subject like weighing your produce,Walmart has that buut it is always broken. Our Publix has a sushi section that prepare them daily. Nice to know they have self checkouts as well. The bag thing reminds me of Aldi or Ikea, we don't have our own bags as much as some stores try to push the idea so good advice.

I remember doing grocery shopping in Nice for the first time back in 2010 and I was surprised that they don't provide plastic bags for my groceries. Luckily, a couple standing behind me at the cashier was from the UK and I asked them in English where can I get plastic bags and they pointed to me the bags where I can pick them up. Those reusable plastic bags are really expensive though.

At my local grocer there's a "deli" and there you can get sliced lunch meats (charcuteries) which are then bagged, weighed, and labeled. So, a lot has become common.

Weighing the produce before you go to the checkout used to be the way it was done here in the US. I guess we've moved ahead on that one and left the French behind.
@JaySwanson
@JaySwanson 7 лет назад
It's certainly more convenient as a shopper to skip the weighing process.

Hey Jay! I think we need to come up with a Kickstarter project to create jackets with built in sacs cabas. I just discovered you from @CharliMarieTV 50k sub boom! and recently moved to Paris. Are there more vloggers like you in town that you hang with? I'd like to make some more vids too and thought it would be cool to meet some similar peeps. -Mike

Hi Jay, thanks so much for all your great videos - your vlog about using the metro was the best explanation I’ve seen, so glad I found it! Speaking of French groceries, I was wondering if you had any advice about bringing home dairy products (Paris to New York), as far as keeping them relatively cold; can’t bring ice packs on the plane and I’ll be staying in a hotel. I won’t buy them until the day I leave, but I’m wondering what I should put them in for the plane ride (I checked U.S. customs site, the Comte and butter I’m hoping for are allowed according to what they say). Any thoughts?
@JaySwanson
@JaySwanson 5 лет назад
Maybe try to buy them the day you leave and buy frozen snacks in the airport?

That store had no parking for private vehicles. They really place a lot of faith in their public transit system.
@JaySwanson
@JaySwanson 7 лет назад
I can't imagine buying a car here - Paris is actively trying to make it more inconvenient to have cars. They want to reduce their usage within the city as much as possible.

Phillip Mulligan It's in the middle of the city and the people who go there live less than 5 minutes away so there is no need for a private parking lot.
