Several years ago, I made the switch from permanently marking my Bibles to recording all of my thoughts, commentary, cross-references, and highlighting in a Bible app. In this video, I discuss the three main reasons why I decided to make that change and I'll also tell you about the cross-platform Bible app that I personally use to handle this.

I love it. I've recently become aware of my markings being blinders when I reread. I also have noticed inklings of pride, wanting people to see my very marked up bible and to think highly of me... That's scary. I don't want that. Thanks for sharing this.

Hey Luke, thank you very much for the nice comment. I agree - when biblical text is completely marked up, it hinders you from being able to revisit passages with fresh eyes and glean additional (new) understandings. You're literally blinded by your own thoughts. Also, that's a very good point that you made about the pride issue. It is something I didn't mention in the vid, but I have noticed in the past in posts I've seen. A thoroughly marked-up or destroyed Bible is in no way an indication of spiritual growth.

@@mike21822 All good points. We have to constantly be on guard, auditing ourselves regularly to ensure that our hearts are in the right place. May He continue to guide us and mold us into the humble, faithful servants that we're called to be.

What a great video! I have never taken a pen, highlighter or any other implement to a paper-and-ink Bible, but I have made lots of comments in my favorite Bible app. You articulate the most important reasons for doing that more clearly than I have ever thought it through, but I agree with each of your reasons, as you so clearly state them!

I love Olive Tree Christian software. I’ve had it for over 15 years so I have a lot of Bible versions, commentaries, maps and devotionals. I do highlight most of my bibles still with only a few comments. I always try to put them in Olive Tree also to have them permanently.

Thanks so much for your comment and for sharing a bit about your approach. You've got me beat by a few years! I think it's been 10 or 11 years since I made the jump over to Olive Tree. :)

Thank you so much for this😍I see all the benefits and understand why this is a good idea. Personally, i like to write in hand. I love to be creative in my Bibles and i actually love going back to read old comments and see how i have grown. I use several Bibles, so it works fine for me🙌🏻☺️💙I also want to be less on phones and computers.. i'm not really a fan of the digital age 🙈! So the old school way works best for me📚✏️.

I do the same thing with Blue Letter Bible. I have an extensive Notebook under BLB and can sort it by date, title or Bible Book order. I would have torn up my physical Bible to do the same thing. I also have a very personalized and flexible Highlighting system (colors with labeled meanings) that applies to all of my BLB versions. I have also an extensive set of labeled folders for bookmarked passages to keep verses relating to particular subjects and concepts that are totally customizable and modifiable. Glad there are others out there that like taking notes, highlighting and bookmarking their Bible.

Awesome. It sounds like your system is quite similar to my own.

I wholeheartedly agree that prior writing hinders the current reading experience. When I used to write in my main bible, I would later revisit what I wrote and think, “Wow, did I really write that!”

I also run Linux so as a fellow Christian and Bible enthusiast who runs Linux, I say good job, sir for leaving Windows and Mac. There are a couple of different methods that you could use to get that windows program running on your Linux operating system. Look into using bottles. You’ll be able to find tutorials on RU-vid and it’s a program that goes along with wine, which is a program that allows you to run Windows executables on Linux. Either using wine or using bottles with wine should work for you. It works for most programs. I found some better than others. It will involve some tweaking and experimentation, but I would say as long as it’s nothing terribly weird it should work.

Thank you so much for the comment! When I made the switch, I made an attempt to get things working with bottles but was unsuccessful. For that reason, I keep a Windows machine on the desk to run a few non-Linux apps.

I’ve been using Olive Tree for notes as well. I like my notes being assessable on all translations.

Yes, that's a huge plus. It's also great to have all of your notes, highlighted passages, etc. synced across all devices. I like having all of that with me at all times via the app on my phone - you never know when you might have a conversation with someone, and having everything at your fingertips is really helpful.

I like to have a Note book 📖

That's another good option. Personally, I've found that I prefer to have the ability to easily edit existing notes/cross-references within an app. I also like the fact that an app will sync everything across all of my devices and it's super easy to search through notes by keyword.

I'm very hesitant to use apps for something like this... I don't want to be at the mercy of a corporation for the rest of my life.

Alternatively, you could just use a pencil to write notes in your Bible. That way, as you mature and grow as a Christian and in your understanding of God's Word, you can always erase what you've previously written and update with your new insights.
@BibleReviewers
@BibleReviewers 3 месяца назад
Hey Deanne! That's another option, but not all paper takes an eraser well. It would be best to try things out on a page at the back of the Bible first (perhaps in the concordance or on a blank page).

Bibles are not that expensive. Just get a new copy every once and a while and transfer the notes and markings that you still like and agree with. Sometimes just reading things without the markings will allow you to notice something that never stood out to you before.
