Let's talk bearing pivots! The development of the framelock flipper was a major contributor to the current knife renaissance! Bearing pivots have become commonplace in knives and you'll want to make sure your bearing knives stay smooth over their entire lifetime. Don't let your knife destroy itself by leaving it lubricant free.

Ryan, I'm a recent convertee to KPL! I've been using all sorts of knives since my youth (I'm retired now). I ran into KPL thru my hobby of flipping balisong since about 1970..... I've because of all my other EDC type knives, I've tried all sorts of lubricants (from motor oil to sewing machine oil, to Tri-Flo, to Yo-Yo bearing lubes). KPL provides a noticeable difference in smoothness and also with SOUND, which is especially evident when balisong flipping. I use KPL Heavy when I reassemble knives, but for general maintenance, I used your bearing advice, and KPL helps keep grit from affecting the feel of moving pivots! My big question: where'd you get that fabulous spherical bit holder????!!!!!! I WANT!

The iFixit Mako is a great kit for disassembling 99.9% of knives (Microtech I am looking at you) and for $35 has lots of utility. Excited to try KPL, used and sold BM blue lube for years and it is good but I have heard such good things, gotta give KPL a shot. These videos are great and love seeing people filling a need because they are passionate about it.

Damn right about the iFixit ~$35 deal being about everything you need...for anything really.

Great information. I have some KPL but have steered away from using it on my bearing knives (Hinderer Xm18 3.5). Question: even though the debris may be held in suspension, doesn’t the “slurry “ cause degradation??

@Knife Pivot Lube - Where did you get the Maintenance tray and the bit "ball" in the upper right? Or did the ball come with the tray?

Currently using ultra lite on most of my bearings. Good stuff. You should of posted your reaction when you found out you forgot the stop pin in an out take. ;-)

I have a genuine question, probably highly ignorant but a question nonetheless. Is there a "top" or "bottom" to the ball bearing rings? Like is one side flat and the other side the bearings are protruding? I'm going to guess that the dimensions to them are even? I have a new Milwaukee Tonto blade, I believe it uses a bearing system (I think) It has a fairly fast action release. It has a protruding notch that you push down on with your finger to release the blade. I haven't used it much but it does seem like it could probably use some oil for preventative maintenance and a bit faster action.

@@geoffreydlin8043 It actually does not - the fluidic motion in the slurry causes particulates to flow out of the way of moving parts. Further, KPL's synthetic molecules surround and bond to the particulates, making their sharp edges unable to contact bearing surfaces. In practice, when using KPL you will be reapplying every so often and swabbing away excess lubricant containing the dirt and grit. In this way KPL cleans your pivot as you use it!

Yeah...I don't think I'll be playing basketball in a lake with my knives. That's just not enough action!. .I'll leave that to the local basketbladers or the lakeballers. They're pretty good.

Best way to take care of them is to throw them away and replace with good old fashioned P.Bronze washers. There's a reason connecting rods on engines last 400000 miles.. Say what you want but facts speak louder. Had 2 with bearings that was double the cost of a regular yet only lasted a year and a 1.5 years at the lumber yard. My 25 y/o never cleaned kershaw is still going.. Just saying!!
