I have used Renovateur safely but best to apply by hand vs rubbing with a rag which will potentially remove more color. Bick 4 is probably the safest and gentlest conditioning lotion I have used. I will also say that even the neutral wax can strip color and I apply a first coat of that by hand as well then rag at the end. Great video my friend.

Do you have to use wax? Is the wax only for shine or does it provide protection too? I know you recommend Bick4 what’s your opinion of Venetian shoe cream? Thanks guys

@@jeffreygoss8109 I think the wax does indeed provide some protection. I also don't think it is completely necessary. I recently tried all the conditioning lotions on a custom patina pair. Bick 4 removes the least dye, venetian shoe cream and renovateur seem equal and pure polish conditioner cleaner removes the most dye...it is also the best to remove old wax polish. Hope that helps.

I appreciate this video! I remember my 1st few patina shoes I used the renovatour because a lot of RU-vidrs i followed said it was something you should use, sometimes even when you get a new pair of shoes. I remember the cotton chamoie would pick up some of the color but I thought that was normal. Luckily I didn't use it that often(maybe once every 6 months or so), and now that I have more patina shoes I am using more neutral than pigmented polishes.

Hi Raphael! Glad you found this helpful! Neutral will work just fine and only use colors when you need to spot clean or cover something. Have a great weekend!

Even with neutral cream and polish, the colour of the shoes will saturate (darken). Excellent video, subbed!

Thanks! I never had one darken for me or it was too subtle, but in any case it’s barely noticeable compared to pigmented polish. The idea is more to retain the “patina look” and not cover it up!

Enjoyed the video Kostas - thank you. Any tips to avoid water drips marking polished uppers? I see waterproofing polishes and other similar products advertised, but are they safe?

I live in Stockholm with a lot of rain and snow and never had an issue honestly. The good thing is that when you apply a good layer of polish or wax it protects the leather. Some like to use some waterproofing spray but I find it unnecessary. it is obviously not great to soak your dress shoes, but there's also the choice of using those over the top shoe covers!

I’ve used burgundy saphire cream on my CS shoes with wine shadow patina and now they are way darker than before , I’m afraid I’ve ruined them already. How can I reverse that effect and go back to previous shade ? Is there any hope to bring the original colour/patina back ? I’m new and that’s my first pair of proper shoes. Please help
@MisiuAcademy
@MisiuAcademy 3 года назад
Hello, you have effectively covered the patina. You should have used only neutral cream and wax. Unfortunately for beginners it won’t be easy and only another patina artist can fix this.

Thanks for reply, what’s my best option to make them lighter in colour apart from patina service ? Would saddle soap or renovateur work ?

Unfortunately I am not good at this so you should reach out to someone like mbshoedoc or the elegant oxford on Instagram 🙏

You say to do polish only when the shoe needs polishing. How do you know when?
@MisiuAcademy
@MisiuAcademy 4 года назад
Hello! Definitely after storing them for a long time. I polish my shoes only when I want to refresh the shine, or if the leather appears dry. Of course, if I take them in a rough day out and they might need a touch I will do it. Generally I polish my shoes every 4-12 weeks!

I will disagree in the most respectful way! Please, never use anything other than saddle soap to strip away old polish and creams. Acetone and renovateur will destroy the patina. I never used a neutral polish in any of my patined shoes so I can't give an opinion on it. Using the closest color cream is the way for me. BTW, wine shadow is a mahogany based patina so use a cream accordingly. Mahogany is a mixture of brown and red. Burgundy is red and purple. I've been a follower of your work for two years. It's great to see your here on RU-vid. Greetings from Portugal.

Hi andre, correct the colors for patinas are usually a mix of two pigments. But for the average person starting up or with no experience with patina work I would never ever advise them to do that. Neutral will bring a great shine as well. As for the renovateur etc, I mentioned it in the video that you should preferably avoid it. I don’t have experience with saddle soap but thanks for sharing!!
