That was mint! The first time I was in a beaver, [O'sullivan lake resort] the pilot ran about 2200 across the water, got a little bit of speed, then pulled that middle lever and the engine sucked down to 1800 and we lifted off the water like a slingshot, haha.

What is the lever to the right on the floor on the pilot side? I did a tour flight in one of these beauties and the pilot was moving it up and down as we came in for our landing.

That's the flaps. They're hand pumped on the DHC-2.

My grandfather on my dad's side of the family was an airline pilot for many years and in the 90's, he and my grandmother had a seaplane business until 2011. They sold the business because he had a heart attack and the doctor said he couldn't fly anymore. 😕

What is the use of the knob on the throttle? Every video shows the pilot caressing the lever by the bare metal root.

Awesome video , and plane! I cant believe the Bose headset you are using , is still working lol. That’s literally the first one ever produced with ANR from like 1989.

Those are the trim wheels. He's adjusting his elevator trim as the plane builds up speed and "steps up" out of the water. You generally start your takeoff run with the elevator trim set to full back.

Hey Jim! I'm not a pilot. I just love beaver! Question about those trim knobs... What's the deal with those trim knobs? What I mean is, what are they actually doing? Because I notice you are all over those knobs compared to some other Beaver pilots on RU-vid. What is it they trim? What are you trimming on approach? What are you trimming on takeoff? Of course, anyone else is welcome to fill me in, too =)

Can’t speak for the Beaver but trim is typically used to relieve control pressures from the elevator. Let’s say you’re cruising along with 80% of your power setting, and you increase the power to 100%, the nose of the aircraft will have a tendency to go up. If you wanted to continue cruising at the same altitude and not climb, you would have to put forward pressure on the yoke to compensate for the increase in power. Following that, you’d set the trim for more “nose down” so you don’t have to hold forward pressure in order to maintain your cruise. For approaches the same is true, you’re reducing your power setting in order to descend, but if you just reduce power and configure the aircraft nose down it will maintain airspeed, so you reduce power and also pull back on the yoke to invoke a “nose up” attitude which will reduce airspeed until you reach the airspeed you need to land. You trim then so you can relax the controls and maintain airspeed without having to continuously maintain pressure on the yoke. Again, never flown a beaver (nor am I rated in Seaplanes) so maybe he’s trimming the rudder, in which case I’m unfamiliar and unqualified to speak. Hope that helps man!

Hello Jim, I enjoy your videos. Howcome this particular vintage plane is more expensive than a modern Cessna 172?
@NEROAviation

Da Epicenter , it’s a much tougher and well built Airplane with a 450 horse power engine with a max takeoff weight of a almost 6000 pounds. It basically does the job of 3 Cessna 172’s.

A great airplane. Checked myself out in one back in the 80’s. Read the manual, took notes, got in and flew. DHC-2 on wheels. Piece of cake.
