Jim shows you how to start an airplane which is a deHavilland Beaver. The motor became flooded from over priming and took three starts to fire up. Shit happens... and good to know how to start an engine that has flooded as well because it will happen to you if you fly enough or you're just "plane" lying.

Hay Jim!! Your videos are awesome!! It was nice to meet you today at Marks house. I’ll be checking out all your airplane videos as I find time in the near future. Hopefully see you soon so I can ask you some questions about getting my pilots license…

Did you switch on the booster coil before cranking the engine? (You have to switch off the booster coil after the engine fires). I know that you have to do this when starting a Lancaster (I have only seen a video of this latter operation and not done it myself). Another trick that works is to crank the engine a few revs with both magnetos dead and then switch on the magnetos while still cranking. You will get huge amounts of smoke and flames coming out of the exhaust pipe but it works.

I feel like that's a more realistic example of the cold engine start or flooded engine start I'd probably always have.

You primed it six times instead of five is why it flooded 😊

Hi, in what situations do you use the fuel boost switch?
@ThePower1037
@ThePower1037 2 года назад
It's another way to prime the engine, but it's more of a failsafe for if the other fails.

You mean on the cylinder head temp gauge? That's a cool normal operating temperature. The green is optimal. One of the things about the Beaver is it doesn't have cowl flaps to retain heat in the engine, so adjusting RPM and mixture are the main ways to warm it up a bit more. Also using a lighter oil grade weight to keep pressure down when operating in cold environments. Was especially true with mineral oils, but modern synthetic oils have more resistance to temperature affecting the viscosity.

Do any Beavers have an inertia starter?

How many times do you have to use the Wobble pump? Before every start or just one time?
@_multiverse_
@_multiverse_ Год назад
7 years late, but yes before each start and whenever you switch tanks in flight, especially if youre draining your tanks until the low fuel pressure warning flashes.
@tifreire1
@tifreire1 Год назад
Sam, so when you switch tanks in flight do you see that pressure drop and you just pump it back up to the green?
@_multiverse_
@_multiverse_ Год назад
@tifreire1 Yes, if you're switching from an empty tank. Pressure shouldn't drop if you switch from one full tank to another.

Jim - why the 5 pumps on the throttle lever?

I think priming.

Initiate the accelerator pumps in the carbs I’d guess which are tied to the throttle valves via linkages. Similar to most carb aspirated engines in the auto world.

hahaha It's funny to see how to start this plane engine. It takes a long time and it's a little hard. In the Flightgear Simulator, this aircraft start up faster.

I know, reply to an old comment. But if you're into radials check out the Boeing 247D in MSFS2020. The PMDG DC-6 seems realistic as well if realistic engine parameters are on. The DHC-2 Beaver in MSFS lacks a lot of systems realism though. I've modified the configs a bit but it will need some custom script coding for better realism.
