Mike Phillips share tips and techniques for taping-off and covering up things like plastic trim, felt or fuzzy gaskets around sunroofs, windshields, tires, vents and grills. This video also shares Mike's "Beach Towel Tip".
The green tape is 3M brand painter's masking tape, it is able to get wet without lifting or letting other products seep past it. You can use either. -Mike Phillips
That's good question Joe and you can tape off as much of a car as you want. With doors, hood and trunk lids you can open these and the wipe any polish residues off. It's best to try to find a balance between taping off what you want to protect and at some point stopping and getting to work. -Mike Phillips
this video is great for the new guys or even experienced detailers who dont tape up, thanks for uploading this guys even though i know how to tape still good information!
Does Autogeek have anything on DA'ing colored plastic like the shiny kind found on door pillars so much these days? If not, would be a good idea maybe. I've had good luck with Ultimate compound and a Megs microfiber pad. Good to see Mike again, he's always there every Spring providing refresher training.
It's a great question! If it's your car and your "time" then you can invest as much time as you like doing what I call "Perfectionist Detailing" and carefully rub these areas out by hand. If you're detailing for money, then if you can get your customer to "pay" you for the kind of time it takes to do "Perfectionist Detailing", then you rub them out by hand. -Mike Phillips
Those are good options and items normally sold by PBE stores used at body shops. AT this time we don't stock and sell these body shop items at Autogeek . net but in the future we might and if we do I'll show them. Great suggestion! -Mike
Just compounded and when lifting a piece of tape I notice a little compound line right where the tape was. So what do I do? Do I clean that off now with detailer spray? Do I use an alcohol mix? And then do I re-tape? My next step was going to be an all in one. Do I keep the tape on and now do the all in one and THEN wipe it off with a product? Won't that product take off the wax I have put on the car with the all in one?
Mike, when you pull up the 3M tape, do you ever have residue left on the painted surfaces? I have (Here in FL too where we have the heat...) and wondered if: 1: Do you experience residue from 3M auto body grade tape 2: How you remove it? I have been using a micro fiber cloth with alcohol on it, but I know this strips the surface of any protectants I have applied. This is why I have suspended taping for now.
Christopher Oshana Look around for sure-solv, or 2 way by Castle, both have laquer removal strengths but are harmless on clear and paint. Awesome for sticky removal. Also , there's always goo gone ( Walmart or Dollar store item) all work great👍
I find taping off my areas excessive while buffing. I am going to have to go back and touch up everything 5x regardless of taping while I'm doing a professional detail.
Would there be any reason to tape the seams between say the door and the fender? I only ask because you taped the hood gasket, would you do that for all panels too?
I realize it's a Porsche but, you spend way to much prep time, if you use synthetic polishes they don't haze up and clean up is effortless.... thanks for posting 👍
