every single time my puppy does something new that i want to know how to manage or teach her to do/ stop doing, Rachel uploads the answer like clockwork, seriously THANK YOU! my maltipoo is only 3 months old and i’ve only had her for 1 1/2 months and this young lady’s vidoes have helped me with crate training, sit and down commands, and even about my pets nutrition.. WOW she deserves an award🙌🏼

I started place training way too late. As in i should have done it from day one of getting him. Hes 1 now and ive started doing place training. And it took 2 days and the excessive obnoxious barking has almost ceased. He hardly barked at the mail man. Place training has been the unexpected best tool for improving his manners and behaviour

I just wanted to pop on here to really thank you for making this video. I purchased a 5-month-old puppy about 6 weeks ago and this is my first puppy in my adult portion of my 52 years. I did have three other dogs that I didn't love half as much as I love this little girl and I hate to say that. But, to the point lol, I subscribed to many many dog content creators. So far, all the ones that I joined are really good as well as you. But, I wanted to say that place can be a strange concept to understand. I was wondering why I would want my dog to go sit there in a specific place when I tell them to as opposed to just go sit. The way you explained it and put so much clarity into it and value on it for the dog to have a place to go that makes her safe and free and comfortable and all of those things, no one else has done that. I can't explain to you how good this video made me feel. Thank you once again and keep up the good work.

I am using the lid to a large plastic tool / storage chest from Home Depot. It’s off the floor a couple of inches, a definite place, moveable too. Works for my11 wk old pup who wants to chew everything. She learned Down today. Did it 30 times, and then did Down in other rooms without the lid and without treats, just my praise. Yay!

It is actually most helpful when your dog makes a mistake. Otherwise we have no idea what to do when our dog does. Also could you show how you would do things like this with their raw food dinner.
@paolaarletty6525
@paolaarletty6525 Месяц назад
I saw a few videos of a golden retriever breeder here in RU-vid and she feeds the puppies a raw diet whilst training them. She hand feeds the puppies the raw meat. Hand feeding is actually a good method of teaching your puppy/dog how to NOT resource guard. But in the case of training the “place” command, you could wear gloves while you hand feed if you don’t want to touch the raw meat.

How do you conditioned them with the command "FREE"? Can you make a video on it? I've seen other videos on using "YES" and "FREE" (continuous reward vs terminal reward). It's a little confusing on this area. Hope to hear from you soon!

I have the same black and white place mat from Target that you have but the problem I have is that my puppy just chews and shakes it from side to side. 🤦‍♀️ He won’t sit or lay on it. Just plays with it. I even tried a towel but he does the same thing with a towel. He can’t have a dog bed either bc he just chews on it constantly and won’t lay down and relax on it. I hope he grows out of it. He’s almost 6 months.

We will be getting our new puppy (she's a Miniature Dachshund) around the beginning of May. I have been watching your training videos regarding marker words. I have been curious as to how you initially teach these words. I was happy to see this one available for viewing. However, regarding words like 'Sit", how do you start training them to understand what you want?
@WellOkaythen.
@WellOkaythen. 2 года назад
Idk if you still want to know this, but you can lure them using food, just hold it above their nose and move back over their head until their butt touches the floor, I'd practice luring without using the word until they can do it pretty consistently or you think they understand the concept, then lure and say the word, you can gradually reduce the lure and then the motion - most dogs get sit pretty easily. Or you can catch sitting on their own and rewarding them then and they'll naturally offer the behaviour after a while.

Smell my Feet = Flaming Bag of Shit - not sure if she's aware of that. It's rather odd that some company decided to turn that into a themed dog toy. It comes from the concept fo someone stuffing a paper bag with shit (whatever is available) > lighting it on fire > placing it at the foot of door at someone's random house and ringing the doorbel then running away to hide. The owner comes out to something on fire and a typical reaction (assuming they ahve shoes on is to stomp it out. Which results in that person witha ton of shit all over tehir shoes/feet/ankles. BUT Yes let's make it a dog toy and the content creator thinks it's great - society slipping much.

This advice is bad. Teaching place is not going to extinguish other behaviors. Those behaviors will still exist, and if dog encounters a competing motivator stronger than staying in their place well, you know what will happen…

yup, ignore the dog if you've already shaped the behavior. he should be rewarded for those things when you ask em to. also may be time to start phasing out treats. extend duration between treats. or have em do 2 or 3 commands before rewarding

This is a great example as to why diminishing the use of treats during training is best. Sure there are useful for puppies at first, but I find for older dogs or even after a few good sessions with a puppy, teaching them to associate their reward with our positive reinforcement like “good boy/girl” is better down the line. I LOVE this method of teaching the “place” command. Instead of luring the dog into the raised bed with a treat, standing by the bed and simply allowing the dog to make the decision to get on it and then rewarding with a “good boy/girl” seems to show the dog how pleased we are with them and completely eliminate the use of treats.

I have a 10 week puppy - shih tzu ....she is tiny...so I tried to use a blanket for the 'Place queue" and even though I am training her to potty on the pad, she peed on the blanket. Any suggestion as to how I can change this behaviour? It's happened 3 times already...: -(

Hello. How do I train my puppy if he is not food motivated or don’t like any treats?

You said that you would discuss how you teach “free,” but I didn’t see that. Is there another video somewhere that discusses this? Also- can you please go in greater detail about “not repeating,” commands. I know that generally commands should only be said once. But during the training process- teaching such things as “stay,”- but they get up quickly and follow. How do you prevent repeating the command but still communicating yo the dog that you expect him to stay, without saying “stay?”

I started training my 9 week puppy and she seemed to catch on very quickly, but the issue I ran into is that what I was using as "place "was getting chewed up, so I would just rush to take it away from her, because I don't want her to continue practicing that behavior. It was hard to take it away because she was also staying successfully in place. Any recs?

I have found your channel to be the most helpful of any out there. Thank you! Any thoughts on an unruly, jumping, hard biting, 4 month old English Shepherd? My rescued Maltese is having problems with being attacked, and I have to carry him up high for to go outside! I know he’s mad because he peed on a pole while he and I were in the basement without the puppy.I feel so sorry for him!

I know every dog is different, but realistically how long would you say a dog could learn this command. I have a 5 month old doodle and we are teaching him “place”. He’s getting better, but definitely not picking it up as quickly as all of his other commands (stay, sit, paw, lay, etc).

A problem we are having that I have not seen addressed... AND WE NEED HELP! My daughter has a Golden Doodle, 6 mos. old and coming along well with all the training she is doing. We all love this pooch but he is a handfull. My daughter does all the training and we are just "grandma & grandpa" to him. Problem: we have a 6 year old cat and, of course the dog loves to chase the cat. We decided to let the two of them work out their own relationship and see how it would go. The cat is not afraid of the dog and even is a little interested in a bit of a chase. It seemed to be going ok for a while. But now the dog who is a standard and growing bigger all the time is getting very enthusiastic about the chase. Cat usually finds a table for cover, etc. but at times cat is caught off guard and dog gets cat cornered with no cover. Cat never even hisses or gives a swipe with a clawed paw and dog gets right in the face of cat and we call off the dog and cat leaves. This, of course, all happens extremely fast and is over almost before it starts. However, as the dog gets bigger and now sometimes uses a paw/leg to come down on the cornered cat who does not retaliate... well, we think we need to do some training about how much rush the dog is allowed to do to the cat. But we don't know just how to do this other than that the dog must be leashed in the house all the time... which we do not want to do. Can you help us figure this out?
