Teaching your dog to walk well on a leash is one of the most important things to work on early on. This allows you to socialize your dogs, teach them obedience, and build confidence/overcome fear issues! This process can be a ton of work but it is a lot of fun if you have the right methods! Luckily we are here to help!
In this video we show you an uncut version of a puppy's first leash training session. Keep in mind, every dog and every person’s training goals can vary, so you need to customize your approach based on that. For us, all of our clients want a well behaved dog that can listen in public as well as in their homes. This video is meant for non competition dogs as the goals of that training will be different.
The first thing to consider is your dog’s temperament. Are they fearful? Are they overconfident or somewhere in between? Once you determine that then you can build a training program that is tailored just to them . With the majority of the dogs we train, verbal praise tends to be enough. However you can use treats, toys, or whatever else helps keep your puppies’ focus.
We recommend walking in calm areas and avoiding grass at first. We want to make sure you have enough space to work in while making sure the environment is not too difficult for your puppy.
We recommend starting off with a ton of left and right hand turns for your puppy. This helps them stay engaged with you. As we mentioned before, you may need to provide something else to keep their attention. This can be treats, toys, and or anything else that gets them excited.
Another thing to keep in mind is to take a ton of breaks. Puppy brains have a hard time focusing, so even a ten minute session can be long enough. Also, make sure you teach them the “free” command. During this time they can do whatever as long as they are not being bad.
The last thing to keep in mind is that there is no major rush with this process. Most puppies can learn heel within a week if you work on it every day. But the younger a puppy is, the lower your expectations should be.

How often should you train a puppy? We have a 4 month old and he is very good in the house. He doesn’t have any signs of food aggression. He knows sit, lay down, off, stay, and free. He walks with me on leash kind of good. But he’s very skiddish, any loud noises he runs and tries to hide. I tried to get him as comfortable as I can around the noises but our neighbor has a bike and if he revs it rocky(our puppy) spikes and tries to run. I feel terrible for trying to correct this because he’s scared, I want to go go more loose leash. How do I do this training in a loud busy area without overwhelming him?
