Hey great video. I just wanted to let everybody know that as soon as you take the back cover off the next step will be to remove the battery. You never know when you accidentally going to drop something in the system board and when there's power going through it you could cause a short and burn out your system. It's also a good idea to make sure that the unit has no power going through it while you replace any parts on it. I hope this helps.
You make a Great Teacher! Well Explained and Demonstrated. I could not get the back off my Elitebook. I did not see the screw on the side by the Dust cover!! Now i do!! Many thanks I can replace my Battery now. Very Grateful. Andy in the UK.
Very helpful! I've used HP Elitebooks for years, and always like the ease of opening the older models. When I got an Elitebook 840 G3, I was a bit hesitant to open it up, without first checking out some videos. Yours was the best, and clearest. I would've missed that tricky screw that hides under the SD Card slot. Thank You! 💯
Nice video. I used to use a 2540p for last 7 years and got this one today. I really miss the old machine it was so easy to get to everything but this feels nice too. Feels more up to date. Thanks for the tips
Great video. I've built a few desktops and upgraded a dozen laptops, but I've never worked on this model before, so thanks for posting. Also, I really liked your tip on threading the screws! I've never seen anyone do that. Genius!
Thanks for the video. It helped me get inside my G50 G4 to add a SATA SDD in addition to the m2. One missing item for discussion is that there are no retaining screws nor is there a cradle for the secondary drive. It's not apparent what is required because you definitely want to either retain it or fill the gap between the back cover and the top of the drive.
You can always tell a pro. I honestly couldn't do my job without my iFixIt kit that includes the magnetic driver. The knurling is excellent for those really tough lock-tite screws and the (non-captive obv) screws follow your driver right out of the PC. I had one client that pulled off all the rubber feet, and then broke the base cover thinking the "hidden" screw under the SD card dust guard was under the rubber feet.
Thank you for the video. It helped me a lot. Just one suggestion. Please hold the fan in place when you use the canned air. You can damage the bearing. It never happened to me, but it is possible.
This was helpful. The laptop had a static electric charge that made power circuit in wrong state. Had to take out the battery and hold down power to purge the charge. I would have wrestled with that screw by the SD Card Holder had I not watched this first. Thanks!
Thanks for the video! Just always store your screwdrivers with magnets together! Take the magnets out from damaged HDD for examle. The screws would come out after the screwdriver :)
6:08 I visibly sagged in relief. I worked in a computer store for a year and some nasty laptops needed us to take the back off, then the keyboard, then the front too in order to access the HDD. I have a 850 G3 with 8GB, i5-6300U, and a 128GB SSD. I got it for $225, works perfect for school in 2020. Nice to see I could add an extra SSD for more storage.
Tks for great vid. Question: From the HP EliteBook 840 G3 manual: Dual drive configuration : System can be configured with a hard drive and M.2 SSD drive. From the manual it seems to support only a combination of M.2 SSD and 2.5 HDD (not 2.5 SSD). Is this correct? Thanks
you should put front of the cover on first as there are little hooks. Also never let your CPU fan spin so fast when dust spraying it. this kills the motor. hold the blades down then spray!
The 850 G2 series is a lot easier to crack open. The back is in two pieces. All the stuff he did to remove screws and the rubber covers is unnecessary. One slide lock frees the removeable part of the back and the commonly upgraded components are readily at hand.
Or uy this for a fraction of the price: m.ebay.co.uk/itm/HDD-Hard-Drive-Caddy-Bracket-HP-EliteBook-840-850-740-750-ZB14-G1-G2-WT-/173652532393?ul_ref=https%3A%2F%2Frover.ebay.com%2Frover%2F1%2F710-53481-19255-0%2F1%3Fff3%3D4%26pub%3D5574631662%26toolid%3D10001%26campid%3D5338243305%26customid%3D2a92125ea35cdbbcc3e7a52288b9a65e%26mpre%3Dhttps%253A%252F%252Fwww.ebay.co.uk%252Fitm%252FHDD-Hard-Drive-Caddy-Bracket-HP-EliteBook-840-850-740-750-ZB14-G1-G2-WT-%252F173652532393%26srcrot%3D710-53481-19255-0%26rvr_id%3D1858506148193%26rvr_ts%3Ded6a36171680ab6053d106a1ffee6dc4&_mwBanner=1&_rdt=1&ul_noapp=true
Can you tell me if the m.2 ssd slot has a screw hole for 2242 format or it only has screw hole for 2280 format? I have a 840 G1 that already has a 2242 ssd and I want to upgrade to 840 G3 but I don't know if i should buy one with m.2 ssd or save the money, get one with conventional HDD and fit my 2242 m.2 ssd.
hello if I need to install w7 in the ssd as I get it detects my record W7 HP factory when trying to select the disc tells me that there is none for installation and install the drivers (you have to change something in the bios?)
The 950 Pro WILL fit in this machine. HP finally changed the M.2 Slot to a 2280 (80mm long) industry standard slot on this. The previous G2 had a 2242 PCI Express M.2 slot and the G1 had a 2242 M.2 SATA only slot. I purchased an Elitebook 820 G3 for a customer and upgraded it to 16GB of ram and a 950 Pro SSD. We "dual drived" the machine by adding a 2TB 5,400 RPM SATA drive for data only storage and the 512GB 950 Pro for the boot drive. Fast as shit.
+Michael Yockey So, HP 820 G3 may have SSD in M.2 and HDD/SSD in SATA slot at the same time? Datasheet says that it's not possible - "Only a hard drive or an SSD can be installed. To install a hard drive, be sure that the standee is stored beside the hard drive slot and not installed across from the SSD connector." Also do you have any cons on this device? Thanks for sharing
I use a 820 g3, now with two SSDs: One in the M.2 Slot (500 GB) the other (250 GB) in the Slot for the 2.5 Inch Slot. They can be used together, the trick is to open the 2,5 Inch case and use just the pcb. With the new 850 Evo from Samsung, it should be possible to use 2 TB (1 TB 2,5" and 1 TB M.2). That's a whopping 2 TB in this small Notebook!
I own a 840 G2 and I like it very much except for the fhd screen which has limited srGB AdobeRGB coverage for a laptop considered top of the line. Are the Zbook 14 G2 or Zbook 15u screens better?
@Eganwp Hey, very helpful and awesome. Thanks for the demo. Got one of these for work, and want to upgrade but not too savy with it etc... Can you please list all of the items which you have fitted on there and all of the possible additions that can be made! I've got a decent budget so help me out please!
Hi, Thank you for the video. I have same model and time came to upgrade. can you make another video to explain how to upgrade the CPU and the graphic card? I know it's integrated intel hd 520 but some people connect egpu through M2 slot. I don't know where this slot is on this notebook. maybe someone professional like you make a video about that. I also know some friends who are searching the same. regards
Be careful with compressed air cans, especially with how close you scoot it. They can spray a small quantity of liquid. Always give the can a good shake and don’t hold the can too close to the computer.
Great video. Thanks a lot. I have two questions. 1. What are the two spare wires next to the wi fi card for (can you add another thing in there)? 2. Can you use both a hdd in the empty space and the solid drive in the other?
I'm not so sure the 840 G3 can upgrade the cpu..... I could be wrong, but it's predecessors were not able to upgrade cpu, as they were integrated to the board.
Hello man. I just have problem with my laptop because I cannot login to it. My laptop model hp elitebook folio and yesterday suddenly I format drive d and e and now cannot login to my pc. Seems the password setting was on drive. D and e. Please find a way to assist me.
Can I install both M.2 SSD and 2.5 inch SSD on HP Elitebook 840 G3 ? If I installed M.2 SSD and replace the HDD with 2.5 inch SSD, will the notebook detect both M.2 and 2.5 inch SSD drives?
+Tardymo technically, it is - its the NGFF (next gen form factor) mSATA drive, dubbed "M.2" slot (so, mSATA second gen slot). NVME SSDs can go in there too (if the M.2 slot is setup to attach to the PCiE x16 slot). HP have the Z turbo drives which are the PCiE based SSDs which you can have installed @ factory by HP (you can CTO them too). Good vid Eganwp - Cheers
+Milan Osborne I wouldn't call M.2 drive an mSata. Those are two different standards and even though M.2 also supports SATA interface, technically it is not an mSATA. How can you call a drive being mSATA second gen, if in many cases it does not even have a SATA connection (like NVME drives).
Fair enough - I get your point, but then why call it an m.2 drive if not, msata 2nd gen? What other relevance does the naming convention have to the storage form factor/
Can i Upgrade my HP Elitebook 850 G2 with a 16gb kit from HyperX HX316LS9IBK2/16 Impact Arbeitsspeicher, DDR3L 16GB (Kit 2x8), 1600MHz, CL9, SODIMM 1,35V or should i buy just a 4gb ram stick
It's the sd card slot, the slot above the cmos battery is the hard drive slot, and the slot below the cmos battery that has 2 wires is for the LTE 4G module
Hello! I got a hp elitebook 850 g3, And i was thinking to change my graphics card if that is possible, is it possible? Please answer! Right now i only got intel graphics 520, and im playing overwatch and the graphics is shit... Thats why i want to change graphic card! Im using this pc for gaming since i cant afford another pc...
CPU is not upgradeable, or let's say not easy to do, it is not in socket, soldered on board. SSD for upgrade can be 2.5" SSD or HDD, or M.2 format, dimensions 2280, SATA (max ~500MB/sec transfers) or PCIe NVME protocol supported (aka HP turbo drive G2, like Samsung XP 951 and newer, 1.5GB/sec). zbook 15u G3 is the same chassis with the same expandability
+Eganwp hey, I'm trying to contact you on another video. The tear down on Vortex 250 PRO. First off, awesome video! my question was could you do a tear down of the motors on the quad? Maybe a motor swap to a different brand even, since your into rc motors. I'm no good at sauntering and "iffy" on wiring and I think that would a very helpful video for many people. Thanks ahead of time!
