In this video we discuss how to tear off 2 layers at once rather than jerk around with the top layer and then the crumbly bottom layer after. This method allows you to get the nails as you go and keeps up with the trash carry.

I live in northeast Oregon and EVERY fucken roof I’ve done working for two different roofing companies (one only paid me a total 300 bucks after over a month of working for them.) every single roof was double or triple layered. My first tear off was cedar shake below three or four layers of shingles. I figured fastest way to do it was parking the dump truck next to the house while I went ham with the tool at the cedar shake until I had a good run along one side. Then I started at the bottom of the roof stripping one row of squares at a time took me 3 hours. Almost entirely on my own to strip the one side of that house but it was better than trying to go at it one layer at a time like I saw the other guys doing took almost three full dump loads to get that roof off. But it was still a one day job. The next day I think the guys that did the install took about three or four hours. There was a lot of bad squares that needed replacing and we had to have someone come out to check the fire damage that wasn’t revealed till afterwards to make sure we could continue.

Sometimes with two layer we cut the roof into a grid of 3’x3’ pieces with a skill saw. We set the depth so it doesn’t cut the decking and then peel up both layers together but they’re in nice manageable pieces. Of course if the first layer is crumb fest this doesn’t exactly work Edit: use your oldest shittiest saw lol that’s what we do

First, thank you for the videos. I appreciate your work ethic and the depth of knowledge that take time to share with us. Second, I'm doing my own roof (first time ever doing roofing work) and it has 3 layers on it. I have to say, roofing is physically demanding and so I have a lot more respect for you roofers than I already had previously and fully appreciate your trade.

I’m doing a nasty 6 layer roof right now from 1970 and we have the really bad tear off bars and we only have 3 or 4 guys there everyday so we just tarp all the way around the roof and then tear the whole thing off and then we all go to the bottom one we’re done tearing and clean all the piles up and drag them to the dumpster then we start pre sheeting and then we shingle it

Is there companies that do just roofing demo that get subbed out from a roofer? I’m looking into doing roof demo to offer roofers is there a market for such a thing?

Use a piece of synthetic felt to carry the giblets. Personally, I like to cover the ground with tarps so I can blow the smaller pieces off. I like the way you run 1 laborer per shovel, keeping your crew working as a unit. That's how I do things. I've seen 4 man crews knock out 45 square tear-offs in one single day on a daily basis. Believe me, I carried the trash and fed the shingles. Hard work, but I've earned bragging rights, knowledge, and bad b*tches.

When you get underneath the two layers do the nails come off two? Or do you have to come back to remove nails and staples?
@NWIVeteranConstruction
@NWIVeteranConstruction 2 года назад
Most of em came off here if I remember correctly but every tear off is different. Especially 2 layer
@jjsroofing860
@jjsroofing860 3 года назад
If I want to take both layers off at once I use a potato fork. You might have to go over it with your ripper to pull the odd nail out after. Either it’s hard work man.

Didn't make sense on this one. I do that on a lot of 3 tab roofs and whenever it works well on architectural shingles. I use it often but there's a time and a place for each method of tear off

Look at that fucking mess! If you guys were doing my roof I'd be livid. Tear off looks like shit, garbage is flying everywhere and you guys are working way harder than you have to. Your poor labourers.. Ideal Process: Always lay tarps down below so your guys don't spend an eternity cleaning up. Rip the capping off. Tear off multiple layers of shingles in full sheets, while ripping from the side, keeping the underlayment intact, and taking all nails out as you go. Start from the top of the roof and work your way down. Once the shingles and nails are off, slowly roll the underlayment off starting at the bottom, rolling left to right or vice versa, working your way up. Once that's done, hammer in or rip the rest of the nails. Use a magnet to catch the nails that are loose on the roof and sweep as you go. Sweep the leftovers into the trough, clean the trough. You're ready to prep.

Please do a video on sidewall flashing when reroofing. Like when you're fighting rusted out old galvanized steps that are nailed tight to the wall under siding. I've seen roofers just go with what they have and rely on caulk/tar or they cut out 4" or so of siding, use new steps and then just nail on a 1x4 trim board. What's the proper way? Love watching your videos!
@m1spartan989
@m1spartan989 4 года назад
Depends on the siding but you should always remove the siding new step and put the siding back on
@NWIVeteranConstruction
@NWIVeteranConstruction 4 года назад
Josh is probably not far off. But if there's not an issue with that wall, meaning a leak, or flashed incorrectly, or missing tins and it won't let us add any... then I'm not usually digging into the siding. I'll make a video on what I do to ensure my walls are good when i come across a nice one
